Does any one have any ideas how to get rid of diarrhea? I've had it since monday. Stomach not really upset, just doesn't feel right, and I get hungry and eat a meal, but I get the runs soon after. I'm trying to drink water so I don't get too dehidrated, but am feeling weak. I've been taking the Walmart brand of Imodian AD (sp?)but it isn't working. Does anyone know of a home remedy that works for this problem? Thanks, Dottie

Do you have a fever? I had a low-grade fever and diarrhea for about 4-5 days. Went to the doctor and he prescribed Cipro - an antibiotic for a bacterial infection. No Immodium. I was feeling better within 24 hours!

Dottie-Sorry to hear about your problem-I know it's awful!

I always heard that diarrhea was a "healthy" way for your body to get rid of some problem, i.e. bacteria, so taking anti diarrhea meds aren't the best idea? But Monday seems like a long time to suffer with it?

Have you eaten anything out of the ordinary lately? For some reason I'm thinking bananas are good for the runs? Like the BRAT diet (Bananas, rice applesauce, toast) So nothing heavy or greasy. But probably the best bet is to call your doc ans ask a nurse?

Thank you, Laura... such wonderful sentiments! :-) Our weather has been crazy, too... but we half expected it. Last year, we were already laying out soaker hoses and starting to water...and this year, we've gotten so much rain that we're completely saturated! We're just now able to get in and cut grass, and talk about tall! It's hard on the mowers, I'm sure, but what can you do?! If it's grass, it has to be kept mowed at least semi-regularly... and if it's garden beds, they must be kept weeded or the grasses, thistles and other nasties take over! So, we're darned if we do and darned if we don't! Mother's Day was nice... calls from my kids, and the husband made a nice dinner... while I spent the day relaxing, for the most part. There are certain chores that must be done regardless of what day it is, like cleaning and feeding dogs and other animals, but that's no big deal... I have it down to a science! ;-) I finally got the old guy to help me get photos off my camera, so I thought I'd share a few this morning... Here's a mama and her twins... My very best mouser... I call her Vixen! The next generation of excellent mousers... one of Vixen's 3 little ones... Walking from the shade garden area toward the new rose arbor... A young Peony Tree in the dappled shade garden... notice the rambler rose runners everywhere on the ground! Closeup of the flower from the Peony Tree... Another Peony Tree in the front yard... north side... And this is a Trillium that opened white and is turning a pale pink shade. It's among a patch of purple flowered hybrid Trillium I planted several years ago... you can see the mottled leaves of the hybrid... I didn't plant the white one, though... And finally, the first of the Irises are starting! I hope you enjoyed a walk around the yards with me... stick around as all the roses begin blooming and other perennials begin to color the gardens a wonderful rainbow of scented color! Thanks, Al... I can finally view Youtube, but the monitor I'm using has no sound on board... for a girl with a technological genius as a husband, I'm always the last to get upgraded! Would you believe I'm still using Windows XP?! I desperately need an upgrade to Windows 7, which should be coming shortly... when he has time to upgrade me. :-) It's kind of like being the plumber with the leaky toilet handle that sticks, or the barber that doesn't have time to cut his own hair... when you're in the business, you're last in line! :-) It looks to be another gorgeous day... sunny and hot with strong humidity... Well, I sorted through my 80 gallon pots of dahlias and sorted out which I was planting with which. I decided to make my first double row the biggest ones, so got that 20 planted. Also planted hydrangeas at the back where it is too shady and rooty for dahlias and hope they like it better. I started these hydrangeas off of cuttings last fall of ones I already had that I thought would be good for cutting. One is pink and white and the other two are blue. So I got my 20 Bigest dahlias into the ground. No power tools here. I have the next 20 sorted into my garden cart so that is tomorrow afternoons jobs. The dahlias are looking good and most have about 1" of plant above soil line. Couldn't beleive how hard and dry the ground was! I think they will get a bit of mulch around them as soon as the ground is well warmed. We did up a wedding on Sat. IT turned out so pretty! The brides color was lavender. (Always seem to have a lavender wedding to do in May!) We used iris in shades of blue thru purple with deep purple lilacs and alliums and front and center on each alter bouquet was a purple tree peony flower with a deep dark center! T bride wanted a bouquet lilke we did last year for someone with lavender callas and purple tulips. We thought we were fine because our lavender callas had produced so many flowers last year. How naive! We eneded up spending $100 of our profit on callas. Do you know how much those babies sell for?! Then I had a pot of Garnet glow that opened at the last minute and was the same color! SO I walked around with my 8 lavender calla's going, "THese are worth over $24! Anyhow, the callas were utterly charming with white liliy of the valley, and the double lavender tulips and pale blue ribbons! This was in our church and we decided that the entry hall needed something so my Garden Partner brought an heirloom crystal bowl and we floated double tulips and lilac petals in it. It was quite charming and oh so easy! Many compliments on the flowers today! I ordered 200 dutch iris bulbs in yellow from one of our suppliers in Holland. IT is always amusing to find how they interpret out orders. These were yellow in bud, then opened out to white on ntop and golden yellow below, and now the top is blushed with blue and I think it is "Oreintal Beauty." And I have about 300 (yes, I swear they multiplied!)of them left! The alliums are blooming with them (Purple sensation and Gladiator) so we are selling them as fast as we can, and all of our subscription customers get these along with the first roses tomorrow. Weather has been quite nice so I can't complain when seeing what the rest of the country is having. I got rained on when picking this afternoon but that was rather a novelty.

I've had a lot of drip coffee makers - and I'm like you, Japus, I want to be able to clean it as best I can...You should try one where the water chamber is totally separate from the unit itself, like my Kitchenaid. After having this I won't buy one unless the water chamber is separate. Coffee scum isn't able to get in there. The only thing that goes in there is filtered fridge water. I'm able to take it off and wash it top to bottom. Also, the way this is designed, during brewing, you don't get any coffee splatter during brewing on the machine except for the area where the dripping occurs - the way it's designed, the rest of the coffee maker is sort of sealed. The only thing I cannot get to is the line that runs internally, so I'm hoping vinegar and hot water and frequent use are keeping bacteria low in that line....I might try baking soda

Maybe you should drink a sports drink, and get back your electro lights (sp)or keep them up. I'm not sure what the drink does for you, but it's been recommended before.

I got out my Home Remedy book.

Are you taking any antacids that contain magnesium hydroxide in them? Maalox, Mylanta, etc? Avoid products that contain only magnesium hydroxide with no magnesium added.

It suggests going on a clear diet...Jello, broth. As your symptoms improve, you can then add rice, bananas, applesauce, yogurt, etc.

It sounds like you might just need to change your 'meals' while you test the waters.

I think canned pumpkin is supposed to be a good, natural cure for diahrrea.

If it continues on, you should probably call the dr's office. I hope you feel better soon.

Get to the dr. That's too long for simple home remedies. It could be an infection, or something else serious. You need to have the cause identified and properly treated.

I forgot to add that taking the above, can actually be the cause...a drug induced diarrhea.

It also said if you were just drinking water (have no electrolyte stuff) that you should mix 1 teaspoon of sugar and a pinch of salt in a quart of water.

The book, in so many words, said what Teresa said above.

I'm with Azzalea. This has been too long for diarrhea unless it associated with flu or something you are steadily eating to cause it. I eat salad w/ mandarin oranges almost every day, and the oranges make me very loose. Is it runny/watery as opposed to very loose? Is there something you are eating regularly? Taking antibiotics recently? Otherwise, find out what the problem is. Also, check for blood in it, but be able to distinguish between blood in the stool and your poor raw bottom. LOL

I agree, too long. Drink Gatorade, Kool Aid, eat Jello and Popsicles. You really need to keep the electrolytes up.

I had an intestinal virus that made me the same way. I could not be more than 20 feet away from the bathroom for days on end. Since it was a virus, there were no meds I could take (immodium helped only a little), so the dr. put me on a diet of only clear liquids for 24 hours, then 7 days of eating only white rice, bananas, and broth. By day 5 or so, I was so sick of those foods, but it worked! They are all very easy on the system. You don't want to eat anything that makes your body work too hard.

Thank you to all that responded...I did call the Dr and he said there really isn't any meds to take, just ease up on the eating, and if it isn't better by monday I should bring in a stool sample. Guess thats assuming I can get that far from the bathroom by then. Maybe I'll lose a couple pounds because of this, but wouldn't recommend it as a weight loss system. LOL Dottie

When I was a triage nurse we always told the patient to do this:
Nothing to eat or drink for 4-6 hours.
Clear liquids for 24 hours.
Start the BRAT diet and increase slowly.
Bananas Rice Applesauce Toast
Call your doc if not better in 24 hours of clear liquids or running a fever over 100.

Just a note that many sports drinks contain corn syrup - which can actually cause diahrea on it's own. Drinking large amounts to "restore electrolytes" might actually make the problem worse instead of better. If you are worried about the electrolytes, the water mixed with sugar and salt is better. Or check your local pharmacy for an electrolyte replacer that does not contain corn syrup. Pedialyte is one brand.

Stay away from leafy greens and citrus fruits, and items that contain a lot of bran or flax. You need to avoid things with peels or skins as well (corn, cherry tomatoes, raisins).

Another vote here for the "Brat" diet, starting with clear liquids first!

I believe Mallory is on the right track. I think there's some stomach virus going around.

Dottie, if you don't have a fever, than, you're having the same thing I've been having. The stomach only get upset almost right after I eat but not lasting all day, right?

Yesterday, I suddenly remembered of my mom's home remedies: Ginger! (not from China =o) I had asian noodles with ginger sauce and it did the trick. The meal stayed in my stomach and my stomach had been calmed ever since.

Thanks again to all you great friends. I'm better today. The eruptions have stopped, the tummy feels pretty good. I'm still feeling kind of weak, had to go to the store because we were out of bread,milk & ect. DH doesn't drive anymore so it was up to me to restock the kitchen. Sure was pooped by the time I got home. Thanks again for all the kind words and advice. dottie

Dottie, glad you are feeling better. I had this a couple of weeks ago, same symptoms. It lasted for 5 full days and went completly away after one week. Sounds like you are on the mend.

Glad things have subsided for you! I had it 2 weeks ago-same as you & totally exhausted-wanted to sleep for a week! I lived in my bathroom...LOL! My Dr said it was a virus and could last 10-14 days...thankfully I was over it in 8 days.
