My first socks & my helper--pic

It took sooooooooo long, but I finally have a successfully completed pair of socks. Just had to share. They are a little roomy, but next pair will be done in the smaller size.

I haven't finished my first pair of socks yet. I'm currently working on my Irish Hiking scarf and a hat.

The first sock I made was a little tight. I guess it just takes practice.

she's beautiful golfguy! enjoy safely. please continue to keep us up to date on your purchases. and don't mind the occasional insult. it happens a lot around here. i live in a big golf town but don't play myself. i was thinking of some lessons though, since i can't ride horses anymore (accident in fancy automobile i was driving years ago. way too much car for a 17 year old girl!) i don't care to see the toothbrush but if you've got any art around (besides the bentley) i'd love to have a peek at it. Congratulations! As Rebecca said, yes, weave in your tail. Be sure to go up and down, not side to side. Side to side will take away from the stretchyness provided by the ribbing at that point. (I once did side to side weaving on a sock where I changed colors frequently, and it really make the sock hard to get on.) Can you join at cast-on so you don't have the dip? I join by the trading stitches method. I don't know how others do it. Yes, picking up stitches for the gusset is the hardest part. I usually pick up 2 extra also. I bought double sets of needles and worked on each sock alternating back and forth so they were both done at the same time, but I have never had "second sock syndrome" where I didn't want to start the second one. He wants to play with your masterpiece, your fabulous creation!!!??? LOL! Oh well, at least he takes an interest in what Mom's doing. Tell him you'll knit him a pair to wear one of these days. Cute story.

I warn you right now - knitting socks is addictive!! The hardest parts for novices seem to be twofold: taking the heel-turning directions on faith, and picking up gusset stitches without leaving holes. The shaping of heels (after you knit the flap) is usually done with short rows, a novelty for many knitters, but easy to do if you follow directions. Picking up the stitches is simpler if you are working with a fairly light-colored yarn and can see what you are doing. On their sock yarn "Magic Stripes" Lion Brand has a basic sock pattern which is very simple and (in my opinion) very good. As for yarns - a number of sock yarns are machine washable wool with a touch of nylon for strength. KnitPicks has some lovely colors, at reasonable prices. Google "buy sock yarn" - you will be overwhelmed! I would recommend a set of bamboo dps. Bamboo holds the stitches better than metal. Get a set of 5, not 4. And remember that this - and other - bulletin boards has access to experienced sock knitters who are eager to share their experiences and give assistance if you need it! Good luck!

@linnea: I have a Roomba for my first floor, and a Neato on the second floor. They clean great, but do require some attention. I much prefer attending these device than cleaning floors. Neato is better for doing a lot of rooms. It actually maps the rooms. Roomba wanders. For a limited area, like kitchen and family room, Roomba works well, however. If you have something like Amazon Prime that allows a 30 day return, the best approach is to try it out. Some adjustments will usually need to be made to the home for these devices to work well. It's impossible without direct experience to figure out if the device will work acceptably in a particular household. Online research beyond the basics is of limited value. A less expensive Neato model is the right first robotic vacuum for most households. Don't assume that spending more money will buy a better cleaning or longer lasting device. There is no engineer who would not find the Neato very interesting and mostly well designed. Edit: I should add that I would consider the Roomba 800 series if I had a carpeted house. Neato, and the lesser Roombas, are just O.K. but not great on carpet IMO. The 800 series is currently on sale, which is unusual.

The sox are lovely! great color.
I am sure you have figured out by now that you didn't decrease enough at the heel gussets....you need to decrease to the number of stitches you started with.

Yikes! Linda, no, I have not figured anything out!! :-)

I followed the pattern strictly and did decrease down to the original 56 stitches I started with, 14 on each needle.

Are you thinking my sock is too big because I did not decrease enough? The sock is called a women's large or men's medium. Maybe that's why it seems so big. My gauge is ok, so I think I need to make the woman's small-medium next time (cast on 48).

Socks, they LOVE to help, don't they? I haven't tried anything with the eyelash yarn that's so popular now because I'm afraid I'd never get the cats to leave it alone! When our younger cat was new to our house, she grabbed a ball of yarn attached to a crocheted afghan and took off with it. I don't know how much unraveled before I caught up with her!
