Crocheted or Knit Cape

Many years ago my grandmother (who passed away several years ago) knit capes for my sister and me. Today my mother says to me " I wish I had your grandmother's pattern for those capes she made for you and your sister." So I said I would ask all of you wonderful knitters if you had any idea about one.

If I remember correctly it was a fairly simple pattern using larger needles.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. It brings back wonderful memories.

I looked around some of the pattern sites I have bookmarked and found mostly shawls and ponchos. What is the difference between a shawl and a cape? A cape has shoulders and fastens?

Sounds like a nice project. Maybe someone else here will have a pattern for you. Wouldn't your grandmother be pleased to know you have nice memories of the capes she made.

Well....that depends. First of all will you be knitting or crocheting? Crochet takes on an average 1/3 more yardage than knit to make the same size square. Secondly what will your gauge be....that is the number of stitches to the inch? That is determined by the size of the needle you use and the weight of the yarn. Once you figure out those things, you can find a pattern that uses the same gauge you plan on using and see what yardage of yarn they recommend, then use that figure for your baby blanket. If you are just doing a fairly simple blanket without fringe or add on crocheted flowers and the like you should be able to get by for about 500 yards of worsted weight yarn. Do you do Ravelry? I had a Bond machine years ago. You don't need to have any knitting experience in order to use one, but it might be helpful. If you start with something simple and work up to a sweater, you shouldn't have any problems.

I taught myself both from a magazine's basic instructions - crocheting first. I think many people will find crocheting easier to begin with because you manipulate the yarn with a hook rather than trying to pull it through with points. Getting comfortable holding the yarn and getting confident enough to relax (death grips and tight work are common beginner problems), while also learning to control that yarn with slippery points may add more frustration. Needle choice can vary with yarn, but using wood or bamboo when you are beginning may help with that slipping off the point feeling when you do try knitting. My sister signed up for a Craftsy class online to get started. I have taken some baking classes and signed up for a knitting one to improve some skills. Haven't taken that one yet, but what I have taken has been very good. The fact that you can stop, start, repeat and ask questions at your own pace and on your own schedule make them very user friendly. Hope that helps.

Wander around in here. They have a few hundred free patterns online. And with the popularity of ponchos and such these days, you're bound to find something.

Thank you for the kind suggestions. But my mother and I can not seem to be able to place our hands on the capes. My "lovely" sister-in-law threw away alot of things she shouldn't have, we think those were some of them.

I will keep looking anyway.

Could you tell us a bit more about the cape? Did it have a collar? How about slits for the hands, or did it cover the arms completely? How long (approximately)? As a child, you probably did not notice these details, but think back and get the feeling you had when you wore it - information may come back to you! Then tell us, and we'll keep looking!

Sorry I haven't checked on this for awhile, just got back from Denver.
The cape had slits for the arms towards the very bottom, buttoned up the front, and no collar.

Dollydots your clipping looks like the ones I made 30 years ago. I have some patterns but not this one. Thanks for posting this

I too had been looking for a crocheted cape and haven't been able to find a free one but I did come across one in the Crochet World magazine Dec. 2003 issue, page 24 Crocheted classic. It has the buttoned front with the slits for the arms. It is about thigh length. It looks very nice and simple.
