help with yarn question

Do you know if you can pull yarn from both ends of a skein to use it.

I know you can pull from one end and use that but will it

screw up the skein if I pulled from the other end too?

My loom project calls for a double strand of yarn or two skeins and I got one gigantic 1lb yarn, not knowing because I didnÂt have my instructions with me.

Lexi, you can pull from both ends of a skein, but you will have to watch for tangles. Unless you are able to stand the skein on end and pull up, it will tangle/twist badly and you will just have to stop every once in a while and untwist it. Another option is to wind the skein into two balls. A small kitchen or postal scale will make it very easy. Even though the band states that the skein is a pound, weigh it anyway (you'd be surprised how many times I've found that the skein is a little light), then just start winding (pulling from the center) and weigh the ball occasionally until you have a ball that is half that weight. That is a pretty accurate way to go.

How would I stand it on one end and use both ends? I'm not picturing what you meant by that. Sounds like my best option is to unroll and re-roll the yarn. I do in fact have a small kitchen scale.

By the way....do you know what it means if a skein of yard says no dye lot? Does that mean if I buy today a skein of blue and come back a month later to buy another it's not going to be mismatched?

Robin, you have been given some great advice, especially checking your gauge, which none of us like to do! If a pattern calls for casting on more stitches, but has a pattern to it, especially a cable, try it anyway. Cables take up stitches, or pulls the stitches tighter, similar to ribbing, so it takes more stitches to fit the same. Also, measure your foot from the back of your heel to the tip of your toe. Subtract 2 inches. That is how long you need to knit the foot before you start your decreases for the toes. The decreases will take up about 2 inches. That is how you get the socks to fit your feet in length, no matter what the pattern says. As long as you get it to fit around with the right number cast on, you can make the foot as long or as short as you need to. I use Ann Norling's Basic Adult Sock pattern. It has multiple cast ons for different weights of yarn. I cast on 72 for my fluffy legs and decrease to 68 at the ankle so the foot fits right. For my DH, I cast on 72 and do that to the end with only decreases at the toe. All on size 2 needles. Cables are not hard as long as you mark your rows and pay attention. There really is a difference between yarns. I am not a yarn snob, though. I believe each yarn has it's place. And some yarns work quite well for knitting, but not crocheting. Remember, this is just my opinion. I recently added a row of Bernat Disco to a scarf I crocheted, and decided that I did NOT like to work with it. But when I used it in a knit project I was much happier with it. And I think yarns are like people. You shouldn't stereotype them. Some people will tell you acrylics aren't soft enough for babies, but I have met some acrylics that I just love! I like working with natural fibers, too, but the fact is that if I was only willing to work with natural fibers I wouldn't get to knit or crochet as much as I would like, because as a rule, they cost more. When it comes to stitches splitting, there can be several reasons for that happening. It can be the yarn itself. I love microspun, but it splits like crazy. I have to tie a knot in the end of it before I start. Homespun too. But I love how they feel, so I just put up with it. If you are crocheting with a yarn that tends to split, what type of hook you use can make a difference. If you are knitting with it and it splits, you just have to be more careful about where you stick your needle. If you tend to knit a tight guage, you might have to force your needle into a stitch, thereby making it split. See the difference for yourself. Buy a good yarn on sale, or at Michael's with a 40% coupon (every week). I made a couple of scarves with some yarn that was given to me that was a blend of silk, wool, and acrylic and I just love the way it feels next to my skin. And I've made scarves using Carmen, which is completely acrylic, and I love the way they feel, too. And what you are making will help determine what types of yarn to use. If you are making a baby blanket that is going to be spit up on, etc., I still say acrylic is your best bet. Just try to find a nice soft, drapey one. Good luck!

Ah yes, the thrift store bag...that's where these came from too! I consider such purchases the purest expression of my past life as a magpie, since I have *no* knowledge of knitting/crocheting, I just like pretty yarn LOL! Good idea to volunteer at the thrift shop, although at ours the employees aren't allowed to purchase anything for three days. That would drive me crazy. We found something I've been looking for *forever* yesterday, some excellent-condition interesting-lined truly Danish teak nesting tables--they went out yesterday and I plucked them right off the floor--if I'd had to wait 3 days they'd definitely have been gone with the active vulture population around where I live :)

Yes, they're similar and you can knit in the same way for scarves. Each brand comes in different color variations than the others.

Lexi, you could stand the skein upright in an empty Quaker Oats box (it's round and tall). That way, instead of the skein rolling around the floor (as I guarantee it will) and tangling the yarns will tangle much less.

And yes, no dye lot means that the color should be consistent with the next skein you buy, but I also guarantee you that this is not always the case. Ask me how I know.

I've knit from both ends, and if you stop and fix any developing tangles periodically, it works fine. I would not bother to make two balls. You want to knit, right? Not rewind balls! LOL!

When using the 100 gram balls of self-striping sock yarn, I do as Donna suggests and use a kitchen scale to weigh the ball, and make two balls out of it, so I can match the starting ends, which makes the socks match almost exactly. In your case, I would still make two balls, as I have tried to use both ends at the same time and ended up with a tangled mess in just a couple of minutes, and I was trying to keep it untangled while knitting.
