Anyone HAPPY with a recent washer/dryer purchase?
Comments (45)hvtech42: "The funny thing is that not a single Samsung model was rated 'excellent' for gentleness by Consumer Reports, whereas LG, Whirlpool, Electrolux, and GE all managed to earn that score on at least one of their models despite not having a 'diamond' drum." Hvtech24, I once was a huge supporter of Consumers Union, publisher of Consumer Reports. I personally knew the late Prof. Colston Warne, who founded the organization, and I treated the detailed tests results in the CU publications as if they were engraved on the tablets that Moses brought down from the mountain. Even today, I do not question CU's objectivity. But I gave up completely on CU several years ago, for one reason: Repeatedly and consistently, they ask the wrong questions. The reports will give you honest answers to the wrong questions, but if the wrong question has been asked, the answers are irrelevant. I have not read the report to which you allude, and therefore cannot comment on what went into CU's blanket assessment of "gentleness." It may mean nothing more than that one machine has a preprogramed cycle for "hand wash" and another does not; you tell me. But I can tell you -- keeping it strictly to laundry appliances -- that CU blackballs any clothes dryer from a Recommended Rating if the door of the clothes dryer is hinged at the bottom (hamper door) instead of at the side. CU automatically gives every dryer that has a hamper door a Not Recommended Rating. Yet we -- our laundry appliances are in the basement which has an old poured concrete floor that is impossible to keep clean -- look for a hamper door as the number one criterion in a dryer purchase, because the hamper door catches articles of wet laundry that fall during the transfer from the washer to the dryer before they can hit the dirty floor. Back to the washing machine: we encounter less pilling and broken fibers in our washed laundry since we replaced our former front loading Frigidaire (= Electrolux) washing machine with our current Samsung. That is OUR experience, but it may have nothing at all to do with CU's evaluation of "gentleness."...See MoreQuince (Cydonia) varieties: Anyone with recent experience/suggestions?
Comments (0)I'm ordering a quince tree soon to be grown in the Seattle area. I would of course prefer a fairly healthy & vigorous tree, and my main reason to plant one is for cooking - membrillo, jam, jelly, savory meat recipes (lamb) etc. and for a natural source of pectin to be added to other fruits that don't have a lot. Sweetness for fresh eating isn't as important as excellent cooking properties, but if there is a variety that offers both I would go for that. After researching about a dozen varieties (the descriptions are all pretty much the same) I've landed on 'Aromatnaya' as perhaps the best for me. Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated....See MoreHi- Does anyone have any recent experience with The Shade Store?
Comments (2)Comparing the Shade Store and Steve’s Blinds is like saying a Cadillac is analogous to a Hyundai. They are two different product offerings for entirely different consumers. The Shade Store has designer fabrics like offerings from Nate Berkus, Chilewich, Novogratz, etc (real noted designers, not just using the word ‘designer’). The fabrics and hardware are very high quality and you won’t find any cheapo parts or flimsy valances made of plastic. They are aiming to provide a neutral modern aesthetic of on trend grays and beiges. If you want peach or blush go elsewhere. They are also super expensive and you can find similar offerings from mainstream brands for far far less money. Most of their products are interchangeable with offerings from others (I.e. roller shades, sheer shades, Roman shades) but they have a couple unique lines that seem to be innovative—gorgeous Horizontal blinds in unique wood and metal (not just plain white ones for a country kitchen available from every blind maker under the sun) and their XL Vertical Blind product are examples. They also have the exclusive fabrics mentioned. I will be using two large shades from them in my project but going elsewhere for the rest due to their sky high pricing that can make rip off artist Hunter Douglas look reasonable and the fact that their motorization systems, while reasonably priced, don’t seem to have any plan for future upgrade or support—when a shade breaks you have to buy a new one if out of warranty. In summary look at their stuff and see if you find it unique enough to justify the price. If not then get a similar product from many other vendors, maybe even Steve’s Blinds. If you want to spend twice the money for manual and get motorized, call a local blind expert to consult with you as there are many considerations and I would not just order from online vendors....See MoreSo, anyone been to Panama recently? Comments (36)Great, I was able to reach her. I usually do my own thing, but in this area of the world I'd like to make sure that we are using people who are vetted when we go on day trips and such, and so I am very grateful for your help. Thx for recommending Medellin, too. I have heard more about Cartagena than Medellin, but I have been researching and Medellin looks wonderful, plus has some great day trips to Jardin and Guatape. Look at these photos! Jardin- cute little city and a cable car through the coffee and banana plantations...See Morededtired
