Cost to operate natural gas furnace
Comments (15)I'm not going to do anything breakthru with my findings. I was just curious to see how much gas the furnace consumed during an hour's run time and then the cost per hour.I understand the cost is dependant on the price of gas . I did make a misstake when I noted above in the first posting that my furnace is 120,000 BTU. The furnace is 100,000 BTU. At first I was satisfied with taking the BTU input rating and doing my calculations from that. But maifleur made a good point that the BTU rating may not be an actual value. So thats when I needed to determine the amount of gas my furnace is actually consuming per hour. It ended up coming out to be about 94,000 BTU. ottawavalley...I understand that outside temp, thermostat setting and how well my home is insulated are factors as to HOW OFTEN the furnace will run. That wasn't my concern. I only wanted to know how much gas was consumed when the furnace ran for an hour. How that hour was achieved was not important. It could of been 60 continuous minutes or six 10-minutes cycles. My gas bill gives total units used in hundred cubic feet. As far as just looking at the bill for consumption, since I have a gas oven/cooktop, gas hot water tank and the gas furnace, just looking at the bill would not tell me how much gas the furnace used. Also my supplier reads the gas meter every other month. The months in between they estimate usage. Sounds like on your gas bill everyone gets a piece of the pie with all the different charges. My bill is broken down to a charge for gas consumption, a customer service charge of like $21 a month and of course the tax on the consumption charge. So it's pretty straightforward how much the gas costs per hundred cubic feet. This month gas was $.745 per hundred cubic feet. I've hooked up the following 24V hour meter to the gas valve: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/REDINGTON-Hour-Meter-2PPV9?Pid=search The meter progresses in tenths of an hour increments anytime the gas valve is open. I can tell how long the furnace runs each day, month or season. This helps with filter changes also. I've found that about every 125 hours the filter is dirty enough to be replaced. I appreciate the comments....See Morewhich gas furnace is best
Comments (16)I fear that contractors are buying furnaces at low cost and the over charging consumers for them. I've had Sears and some private contractors give me estimates for a new furnace. The prices are in the area for $8,000 or above; some in the area of $5,000. My ductwork appears simple. I also want a humidifier and an electrostatic filter and a two-speed furnace. When we talk about these things - I feel that the injection of the wholesale prices for any equipment or a figure in the ballpark gives the consumer a base to understand what they are being charged for. I happen to believe that the labor/installation cost is more accurate but the equipment prices is the gray area that we are being stuck at. Washington DC/Metropolitan Area. I need 125,000 BTUs for the furnace. I feel that the furnace may cost about $1,000 to $1500. I prefer Carrier, Rheem, Trane and possibly a Sears (Kenmore). My real concern is that most contractors trying to get my business - keep adjusting their prices to make it appear more affordable to me. If they are marking up the furnace by a $1,000 dollars or more, then I believe that they are ripping me off. I need to know the wholesaler to contractor prices for units to determine a clear bargaining price....See Morenew natural gas furnace or mini ductless heat pump?
Comments (10)You are right on the cusp with a 20 yr old gas furnace of when the codes changedand the requirement of all gas equipment was for a minimum of 78% efficiency. That was '93. The question is, is yours one of the newer units or did they put in the older style. If the older, then you may be looking at a 60% efficient unit. Also, those being new designs there were some problems with those "new" units at the time. l guess after 20 yrs we can call your ok;) Although the previous owners remodeled I would make my mshp/furnace decision almost solely on the condition of the duct system. You need to have it pressure tested for leakage. Google "doeductleakage" to see what I am talking about. If the duct system passes muster then the new furnace is a choice. If it doesn't then it is not. It is not worth spending the money to repair it. I pulled all my ductowrk out and went mshp and Rinnai Energysaver (all Net to the space heating/cooling with no duct or duct losses) As a result, with the elimination of the ductwork I found two good size closets and a large storage area under the stairs and we are very comfortable....See MoreWhat size natural gas furnace do I need? Comments (4)Load calculations take into account windows, insulation, and design temperatures for indoors and out. Have you checked into local energy efficiency programs that might help you with this? A load calculation might be part of that package. Sometimes local governments fund them directly or through utilities....See More- 9 years ago
