Reading material for eight-year-old boys

There was a discussion before Christmas about what eight-year-old boys were reading. I think someone was wanting to get books for Christmas presents....so I've been watching our eight-year-old grandson who loves to read. He read, Magic Treehouse, when he was seven and loved each and every one of them. This year he got Diary of a Wimpy Kid for Christmas and couldn't lay it down. I bought another one in that series and he liked it just as much..there is one more of them and another coming out in the middle of this month. For paperbacks, Captain Underpants is sort of fun but has some kind of gross jokes in it. Little boys sort of like that sort of thing, though. One of the jokes:

What is cold, green and has whipped cream on top??

Answer: a snot fudge sundae :o)

Well, all the little boys thought that was hilarious, but the little girls reacted differently.

He has some Harry Potter books but he can take them or leave them...not too thrilled.

i know waht you mean about harry potter...think rawlings "aged" the books along with harry...my friend whose a teacher used to read the fist and second books but when the rest came out she didn't think they were age appro for the younger set...

i'm making a list of your reccomended books..our only dgs is just beginning to read and when he reaches the ripe old age of 7, i'll be ready...he's only 3 now...

My 7 year old grandson loves the "Bone" series by Jeff Smith. He has read all eight and is waiting for #9. I wasn't too thrilled about some of the Captain Underpants/Diaper Baby books: we had baby talk, bathroom talk and gross language for about three weeks after he finished one of each book, so I stopped getting them for him.

The video doesn't really show me much of the leaves. My first thought was "ash" thanks to the tree's shape but who really knows. What I have been reminded to keep in context is how LONG the heavy winds continue. Over the last decade I have seen stronger downbursts and straight line winds but not for hours and not after that much rain. Interesting to see which trees uproot vs break apart. Ilovemytrees, when you mention NY I picture trees planted in tighter spaces on older property. Wonder how many pulled up "soil squares" like we see in older parts of st louis sometimes.

Thanks all! They lve in NYC,( we'll spend part of the time in greenwich ) so the museums,zoos,etc are often visited. I'm looking for something less tame. I found actual flying trapeeze classes that look incredibly fun. :>O The thought scares me, as it might his parents, but it's for kids. There's a youtube video on New York trapeeze kids. I feel so sorry for this young girl. Psychologically abused. Her mother for so many years basically telling her she isn't pretty unless she does all this yucky stuff. doing all this stuff to make her able to "win and be beautiful" is telling her she is ugly and not good enough for anything. That she isn't smart, and now, the state is telling her that her mother is a whacko and is doing bad things to her. That her mom is a criminal. (which mom is by the way, but hard for such a young girl to understand it) I hope they can get the child some therapy and she is able to have a normal childhood and life.

jak1...I sort of agree with the Captain Underpants thing...I doubt that he gets any more of them, but this one he has, he has had fun with...wouldn't want to make a habit of them, though.

I just went into my granddaughter's bookshelf and found the Magic Tree House book she loved (she's 8) Girls love this book too... I am checking online to find more of these,

How about books for a 12 year old? She's quite a reader, and just finished the 4th in the Twilight series. Looking for something she'd like for her BD It is the 23rd of January.

My grandson LOVED the Spiderwick books. He was beside himself for the movie to come out and was really disappointed in it. Told him that they had to change some things so they could fit all the books into the movie. I think he must have read those books at least 6 times each. He liked the Gary Paulsen books "Hatchet" and "Brian's Winter". He is 11+ now and reading the "Fablehaven" and "Pendragon" series. At least he is reading, he hatehatehated reading for a long time and now I can't get him to stop to go to bed.

He might like Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, if he's a good reader. The reading level is ages 9-12. It's a good adventure/survival book. My boys loved it.

My boys are advanced readers for their age..but my 8 year old still loves the Diary of a Whimpy Kid, Spiderwick, Cub in the Cupboard, Horrible Harry books (he'll read 1 in 2 nights of 20 minute reading)..
My 11 yr old likes the Pendragon series. And The Young James Bond.

My son loved the lemony snickets series of books when he was younger(15 yrs old now).Walmart was the cheapest place to get them,I think there are about 12-13 books in the series.
