The blandness may be why callers don't listen to it. My inbox is always cluttered with messages for DH.

All we have are cell phones, so we rarely miss a call. It's the standard voice mail info they put on cell phones.

BORING!!!!
Hubby always wants to do something weird, like one time, he learned how to say it in spanish,(we don't speak spanish at all!!) so that's what we had for awhile.
See what I deal with everyday from him!!! LOL!!

I have to add one more thing. Our first computer was an Amiga, a wonderful machine that never got properly marketed and disappeared after a short time. My son, who was 10 at the time, programmed it to speak our answering machine's message. It said, in very robotic tones:

This is Susan's computer. I love her. Please make her happy by leaving a message at the sound of the tone. The last word was rather drawn out. The message always made us laugh.

Mine came with the machine. Some strange man's voice, "We are unable to take your call..."

I hate clever messages! And Polite messages! And blessings! And I know all about leaving a message after the beep! And that you will or will not return my call as soon as possible! Don't make me wait through your blatherings. Four rings, "Please leave a message", beep. That's all any of us needs.

Whew! And on a different post, I said I'm not anal!

I had a friend who had a long introduction of fuzzy music before she said anything. Sometimes, I'd just get bored and hang up.

A long time ago, I had Elvis singing Are You Lonesome Tonight in the background, and I said "I can't take your call right now, my boyfriend is singing to me. Please leave a message."

When I have to hire people to work for the Federal Election and have to call over 2,000 people it gets very annoying when you have to listen to some of the really LONG cutesy or stupid messages before you can leave your message. I get to the point after hearing about 50 of them that I just hang up when their machine comes on and if they are lucky I might try to reach them again. When they call me to ask why I never called them for a job I tell them that I did call but there was no answer so I had to go to the next person and don't have time to leave messages for everyone I call. That would swamp the switchboard if I leave messages for everyone call me back because the receptionist isn't allowed to transfer those calls back to me, she has to take messages.

So, if you are expecting a call for a job, get rid of the long, cute or supposedly humourous message on your answering machine.

I ask because it takes me the same length of time to say each of them.

LOL I think mine is long and have wanted to change it for a long time just can't figure out how to do it yet. Your message reads faster.

Some of the messages I get are really long, with lots of giggles and 2 people talking or cartoony jokes that seem to go on and on. My niece has a dowloaded message that sings a song or rather shouts "wait a minute, wait a minute, she'll be right here, she'll be right here, just wait a minute. Then the guy laughs and says you better call back.

Some messages make it sound like a person has picked up the telephone. Machine: Hello -
Me: Hello, is Jack there
Machine: Jack isn't home right now call back or leave a message.

For 2 weeks I am on the telephone 10 hours a day and yes some of the messages are annoying.

I even think my message is annoying. LOL

Well, the greeting that I posted, above, is the "main" greeting on our answering machine. Our phone/answering machine actually has 9 "mailboxes," and we can save telephone numbers in such a way as to direct them to a specific mailbox when they call. When hubs was coaching Little League (eons ago), we programmed in all of the home, work, and cell numbers of the parents of the kids on the team, and they were all directed to a specific mailbox. If the weather was funky, or if anything else might affect a practice or a game, hubs could record a message specifically for those folks and if they called, they'd get the latest info (but no one else would).

About a month ago, we started getting calls from someone whose phone number was not in our area code, and we didn't recognize the number or even know anyone in the geographical area served by that area code. So, we didn't answer the phone -- we'd wait to see what was said by the caller, or if we recognized the voice, etc. Problem was, the caller would listen to the greeting, but would never leave a message - not one word. The caller would just hang up when the machine beeped (for the caller to begin recording a message). After a solid week of this, with this person calling up to 8 times a day, I directed calls from that number to a specific mailbox, and I recorded a greeting for that mailbox that said, essentially, "You are calling here repeatedly but not leaving a message. Either leave a message or don't bother calling again, because we're not going to answer when you call." This person kept calling, but still wouldn't leave a message. So, after about 4 days of that, I changed the message to "Albert Einstein defined 'insanity' as doing the same thing over and over again but expecting a different result each time..." This idiot kept calling, still not leaving messages, for about another week, then finally stopped.

"I'm using my answering machine to avoid calls from an annoying person I know. Leave a message after the beep. If I don't return the call, it's you."

When my BIL leaves a message it's never short & sweet, it's the Gettysburg Address!! He will talk until the machine beeps and cuts him off, calls back and resumes his speech for another 30 sec's or so, calls back AGAIN, etc. Once my youngest DD was on vacation in Aruba, called us and couldn't leave a message because DHBIL filled up the machine. BTW, he's the person I'm referring to in my previous post.
