Imagine my surprise

Yesterday I went to the city driving my mother and my neice. We went to lunch, dropped some stuff off at the Salvation Army, hit the bread store, then on to the dollar store. Well, I'm a fast shopper, cause if I brouse, forget about it, I'd have a gazillion things to return. At any rate, I came out of the dollar store early and scooted over to Shop*Rite grocery. Snagged three boxes of sandwich meat and up to the check out.

Wellllllllll, the lines were so long, all two of them, they curled around and down the isles. very confusing as to exactly where the line began or ended. Voila' they opened a third isle, and blam!!!! It was like a stampede to it. I stayed put. Huge grocery carts, piled high. about five or six in front of me. The 2nd lady in line motioned to me to come up ahead of her. How nice that was. The lady in front of her was buying in serious bulk, I'm talking like 8 boxes of cereal. Every thing neat, I mean neat. lined up, stacked, in order.. wow.. so the cashier was just as neat putting it into her cart, taking all the time in the world. (Wish I was like that) anyways, the lady now behind me said, well that didn't save you too much time.

I looked at her and said, it was so nice of you to let come ahead. Mostly I don't mind waiting, but my Mom (85) blah blah.. I thanked her again and told her that so many times, I let someone go ahead of me, if they look harried or on lunch hour. I'm not generally in that big a hurry, so I don't mind, but it is so rare that others have let me ahead, that it really made me appreciate it. It takes so little sometimes to show a kindness to others. Now it really makes me glad that I did and do....

Doesn't it just make your day when a stranger extends a courtesy?

Your shopping trip sounds much like mine...Goodwill, breadstore, (goodness, one can save there), dollar store, or Big Lots, a grocery or two for the 'best' specials, all in passing.

Hi Cliff and Craig. I knew that frogs would eat Goldfish and even young Koi but to eat a fish that large would have killed this frog. I got pictures last night from Kathy & Rick of the frog and it didn't really seem to be all that big. Well, guess what!!!!, it's happened again. This again is a real puzzler because the frog went to another pond 20 miles away and today there were three more Goldfish Dead. So, it could be that the fish had been stressed for such a long time from the damage that the frog caused or there's something else going on. I suspect your right Craig about frogs eating the smaller Koi and/or Goldfish. The other thing is that there water conditions seem to be perfect and they have many large Koi in their pond and they seem to be fine. Normally if water conditions are poor, the Koi are the first to go. Cliff, I have seen the same thing also. Those frogs sure are pretty quick. Again, I'll keep you all posted.

LOL with you, Mindy. I think Dudley and Rich would get along famously. This morning when I was looking at glaring spots in the garden and thinking about the Ladd's sale, Rich looked at me and said: "You know, hon, the way I look at it, your planting and garden stuff is cheaper than a psychiatrist or street drugs. If you have to throw all your extra energy into something, I'm glad it's the yard." Does he get it??, probably not ..... ....BUT .... He's not joining me on the trip since Roses are on sale and he knows he wouldn't be able to resist filling in some of those gaps .... :-) Martie

Its not a matter of pieces and parts, the problem is the plant can not use its own pollen. Those who say that they have had success with a single plant owe their success to the bees that found other plants in their range. Its not a coincidence that every year someone starts a thread asking why their lone tomatillo plant is not setting fruit. Yep, very nice of the lady to let you scoot in front. I don't mind letting people in front of me either. I'm usually never in a hurry when I'm shopping. NancyLouise

That worked out swell despite there being a lady in front of you. Same happened to me in Kroger Monday night. I walked to the front to find four lanes open (rarety) and each one way down the aisle. Just as I approached the first lane, the cashier was standing in front of it so that everyone could hear her announce "Lane 1 is open!" I only had a 90Â° turn to make to be first in line, but one lady rushed me (almost ran me over LOL). She told me to go ahead, so I ended up first afterall. Only thing was she was still rushing me and caught the back of my ankle with her basket. Gosh that hurt.

I, too, will always let the person behind me move ahead of me if they have just a few things and I have a lot.

Years ago, my brother was with me while I was grocery shopping. I had a fairly full cart, and an elderly gentleman came up behind me carrying only a one-half gallon carton of ice cream. I told him to go before me, which he did. The cashier quickly rang up the purchase and the man handed over exact change. The whole transaction took less time than it was taking me to put my groceries onto the conveyor belt, so it didn't hamper me at all.

As he was walking away from the register, the gentleman turned back to me and said, "You shall reap your reward in Heaven." Caught me by surprise. A simple "thank you" would have been more than sufficient, but this guy made my day!

They tell what a great place heaven is ...

... but how many have you ever met in any hurry to get there?

Trouble is ... quite a few churches say that if you try to speed it up a bit, in your own case ...

... that's a sin!

When at the grocery store I always try to let the store employees go ahead of me. Hey, they only have so long for a break or lunch. They are always appreciate the gesture.

In Iowa when they open up a new checkout lane noone runs over to it, just wait for others to go first. Same way at a four-way stop sign, we call it the Iowa standoff. Everyone waits for the other person to go first.

In the Fall of 1993 my brother was hospitalized and the doctors and nursing staff told me that he was not expected to live through the night. I was allowed to stay at his bedside in ICU, and I sat there all night, holding his hand and talking to him -- telling him that he couldn't up and die on me then because I wasn't ready to lose my brother.

He lived through the night, and was hospitalized for a little over 9 weeks before being discharged. (More than six of those weeks were spent in ICU.) Several times during those weeks he would take a turn for the worse and his doctor would tell me to "get prepared." After one of those episodes, my brother told me that he had a near-death experience... that he saw where his place in Heaven would be. His face just glowed as he attempted to describe the indescribable beauty, joy, and love... And from that moment on he didn't fear death at all.

And neither do I.

My brother died in the Fall of 1994.
