I think Roman Numerals are cool.

I wonder how many younger people would know what this means? No one in our school system today, I'm sure.

Thats cool to know. A good way to remember it is, Marilyn Monroe Extra Large. There are so many things we learned in school that is not taught today. Regular Physical Ed, for one. I wonder do they still teach Home Economics?

I loved Roman Numerals in math class....it actually made sense to me; fractions as well.....any other math was lost on me. No, Dotmom, they don't have Home Ec any more, as such. It's called something else here, but I don't recall just what.

Actually MMXL is 2040. L is 50. If you put an X in front of the 50 that means to subtract 10.

    2011 is MMXI

    MMXL

    1000+1000-10+50 = 2040.

The new year, 2011, is MMXI (1000+1000+10+1).

Roman numerals are interesting, but I have not worked out a routine to calculate with them. The difficulty arrises because the value depends on position: IX is 10-1=9 whereas XI is 10+1 or 11.

The other difficulty with Roman numerals is how do you express truly big numbers for example, out national debt. How do you write a million? Trillion?

Roman numerals may have lost significance in our schools, but interestingly, these still appear on clock faces.

Of course it's the I. How dumb of me. Good catch, and thanks for the correction.

    Happy MMXI to everyone!
