I missed this question so hopefully I'm not too late. They're all 1/8" thick grout line. The tile on the floor is just a tiny bit off of the color of the tile on the walls (because the granite place went out of business and I had to find different tile) so the floor shows the grout lines a little bit more than the wall tile does (it's a perfect blend there). The spacers were the same though on both :) My counters in that bath are crema marfil...I just love the stuff :) In person you can't tell that the two tiles are from differnt quaries, but when I take pictures I can see one is just a tiny bit lighter than the other (the flash accentuates it) which is what makes the grout stand out that tiny bit.

Part of it is traction underfoot, and that does depend on the material used. The other aspect is installing the tile so that it conforms to the slope of the shower pan. The larger the tile, the more likely it is that when it it placed on the floor (dry, no thinset) that it'll wobble a bit, as the large flat tile won't sit perfectly flat on the floor due to the compound slopes of the floor mud. With smaller tiles, you can install them in most any pattern you choose, their smaller size allows them to more easily conform to the compound slopes of the floor. In my practice, 2"-4" squares are most common. 6" is slightly less common but still done. When you start getting to 8" squares, then you might end up having some diagonal cuts in the tile. 12" squares and larger? You'll usually have cuts and grout lines on the floor from the corner of the floor to the to drain. Not always, these things can sometimes be compensated for when doing the mud bed. "Depends" is a good word to insert at this time. Regardless of the floor tile used, additional grout lines usually means more traction underfoot. Mongo

I think the first question is: do your tiles look dated? Be honest. Unfortunately tile looks don't seem to stand the test of time. We had the 12x12 tile in our kitchen demo-ed. I would say that it is VERY awful...we were moved out while that was going on. The demo-ing only took a couple of days though. In our case the tiles were extremely bonded to a concrete subfloor so I would guess it was worse than usual. OTOH, floors are too often neglected in kitchen renos. It's sad when people spend crazy money on cabinets and appliances yet leave dated floors in place. It's not good when you can *tell* that they left the old floors in place. My flooring budget (replacing the kitchen tile with hardwood and refinishing the hardwood in dining/living/hall areas) ended up being 25% of our kitchen reno budget! It was a huge hassle as we had to move everything out and we are a family of four. We had to find alternative accommodations for a week because the flooring area included our home entrance. But I would say it was a critical element to the kitchen reno and I have no regrets now that I'm on the other side. I don't imagine that grout refreshing will be simple or cheap either. $3000 sounds like a great price to me if it includes demoing the old grout. I would add to that budget the cost of moving items and staying out of the house during the demo part. I do love a white kitchen. Personally I would not choose a white floor to go with that - I agree with comments that a mid-tone would "ground" things better. I think earth coloured ceramic would look great if they were VERY good quality - some are quite vulnerable to chipping. I also love this look: If you're considering resale, do consider alternatives to tile if you do not live in a warm climate.

When I suggested running it the long way I was considering the best look for the bathroom beyond too. I like a long edge to run into the room. It will make less cuts by the tub too so the edge is tidier. I don't know how wide the hallway is but to me the layout looks very chopped up since there's only one full tile in each course. With the 1/3 offset that an amateur should probably use it will be even choppier. It will be one large format tile next to a sliver of the other. The pic Bill posted is beautiful, but it looks like the hall pattern follows the pattern that was chosen for a larger space. That's why I like the stacked pattern here, running the length of the hall and then continuing into the bathroom.
