DuPont Real Touch Laminate Wood Floor

My DH is interested in a wood-look laminate floor that Home Depot sells but he doesn't know if it's durable enough and how it holds up over time. He wants something with the underlayment attached which this has. Real wood is out of the question. We don't have kids or pets, but he can be somewhat careless with his toys and such (isn't careful not to scratch, etc).

HD has what they call "DuPont Real Touch Laminate Gunstock Laminate" that looks very nice. Can anyone chime in on this before my DH springs for it (probably in the next week or so). I read a few reviews on the website, but I'm hoping people here can share their experiences with this product.

The floor he's interested in is the 6th picture (Gunstock); second option would be the 2nd picture (Cherry) in the provided link.

They just finished laying this in cherry in 2 bedrooms and hallway in my house. I can't help you with the long term, but it's gorgeous. I already have 2 scratches - one of the guys scratched it somehow while laying it and the other I dropped a metal vent cover, not surprised that scratched! But it is a small scratch and not a big gouge so I'm glad for that. Then I took some of the colored caulk like stuff and rubbed in it and it's not nearly as noticeable.

Hopefully someone will be able to let you know how this holds up long term.

Would you keep me posted on the how yours washes up and if dust is very visible over a few days. I'm not one to be on top of my floors, but luckily we don't have pets, so that that will help. I generally will dry mop once a week, and wet mop every few weeks.

Late response but- I installed about 880 sft of the Gunstock Oak pattern in our living room and dining room in September 2007. I am finding that it is very soft and easily damaged. After five months there are already several chips just from our dog dropping his toys, a one inch diameter crush spot from something 'not too heavy' falling off a desk, and several light scratch marks just from sliding chairs to vacuum under. This is in contrast to some Formica laminate (they no longer make) that was installed in our previous home for about ten years. In all that time it got only a couple of pin head size dings. So if I could do over, I would use something different than the Real-Touch Elite.

I'm laying down expensive engineered maple in our lower level which will be ontop of concrete. This is a perfect application for engineered wood - dealing with potential moisture. My flooring has a thick layer of maple which can be sanded a couple of times and is covered with a thick layer of matte finish aluminum oxide. As Polkadots mentioned, I shouldn't have to sand the wood, just screen the protective finish and recoat. There are several types of engineered wood products, obviously at different price points and one of the areas affected is the thickness of the wood and the method in which the wood veneer layer is cut as well as the quality and amount of protective coats - the most expensive is obviously thicker and cut in the same manner that traditional wood is prepared. The cheapest is a much thinner wood layer and I don't know how to explain it, but it's cut quite different and looks different from traditional wood. Upstairs in the bedrooms we're having traditional maple floors laid and while these are also top of the line, I'm actually paying more for the engineered wood. The fact that engineered is glued to plywood actually is a more expensive product - shocked me because I always thought engineered wood floors were not as "fancy or quality" as tradtional. Both the engineered floor in the lower level, the maple floors I put in when I built my home 10 years ago in the main level and the new flooring going in the bedrooms will all look the same. As for laminate, I'm sure there are many levels of quality of the product as well as installation techniques. I know my DD#1 has it in her apartment and while it is wearing very well and has a very pleasing oak picture - walking on it is a very different story - you can feel it bounce. I have also looked for the repeats and don't really see any - maybe cheaper laminate has less variation of pattern than a better grade?

Make sure that any reclaimed wood has been properly treated for insects or you'' end up with an infestation in your home. No plastic picture of wood floors over particle board in a kitchen. Either choose real wood, or tile.

My father was a ceramic tile contractor. I also have lots of family and friends in the Houston area. To me, there are two separate and distinct issues: (1) whether to use tile or wood; and (2) whether to use wood look tile if you go the tile route. A single flooring choice in the public areas of an open concept works well. Having a separate type of flooring for the kitchen is also common. In the Sunbelt, cold tile floors is not a big issue. More of an issue is being on your feet a lot. My choice preferences would be: (1) wood floor throughout; (2) stone look porcelain tile throughout; or (3) stone look porcelain in the kitchen and wood all other public areas on that level. Wood look tiles IMO paint you into a design corner. It’s IMO a fad. Beyond that, wood look tile seldom works with other flooring choices. It never looks real because of short lengths. It does not transition well with real wood or stone look tile. So if used, pretty much need to use throughout. It can greatly impact kitchen cabinet colors. If you tire of it, it is a pain to remove. Wood floor can be refinished.

Deb: I have DuPont laminate (don't know if it is "Real Touch") in my living and dining room for 5 years, and it still looks like new. It is a low-traffic area, but it has held up beautifully.

Last year we replaced the carpets in our kids' rooms with laminate (not DuPont), and we are very pleased. Our kids are older teenagers, and they aren't exactly careful, but there are no marks on the floor, and dust isn't too visible.

We do have a little dog (20 lbs), and he hasn't scratched the floors, although he does skid on them a bit if he runs too fast.

I have Dupont Real Touch in my place- I am only there part of the year, but it has been very durable- the salesman showed me that you can scratch as hard as you can with your keys and nothing happens. Dogs are on it. I am surpeised you have a scratch- I can see one that would be caused by the vent edge hitting it. I do like it.

Thanks for your responses. This laminate would be installed in our dining room. While the dining room doesn't get used much for eating, there are 2 door openings that get used daily as a pathway into the kitchen or laundry room and to go upstairs from the kitchen thru this room. I'd probably get a nice size rug for under the table to help keep the floor looking good.

There's always been carpet in that room and I'm done with that.
