About Farberware

I decided I needed a larger saucepan and/or probably a smaller stockpot after making a small batch of jelly in my 8 qt stockpot. Kohls had a set of Farberware stainless steel cookware for a fabulous price. The store was out of this set (of course) but found it on Amazon. I have had a few pieces of Farberware for a hundred years but I need at least a couple of larger saucepans/stockpot. Mine are probably from the 60s but outlived my Revereware only because I finally got tired of cleaning the copper and donated them. I'm sure these must be made in China, I didn't check the display while in the store and it is a bit far. Has anyone recently bought a set? Are you happy with them? or better still, has anyone had a chance to compare the new Farberware with the old? I found a review of their coffeepot and the reviewer said the new coffeepot was quite a bit lighter weight than her 50s or 60s.

I know the handles aren't the same. They don't feel as good.
I really like my old Farberware and I wish I'd bought more before it changed. There are often old pieces on Ebay, but not seeing them in person, plus paying shipping -- not appealing. Farberware was always much better than Revereware.

About 2 years ago I bought a Farberware stockpot on sale at Amazon. It was a very good buy, the right size, layered bottom and works well for soup and boiling water for pasta. The plastic handles don't bother me much. We've had numerous Farberware percolators in our family.

The Farberware MicroBrew makes two "coffee" cups (eg. 2 * 6 oz.) of coffee. Put the coffee filter section of the MicroBrew on the bottom coffee pot section, put a #2 cone filter in the basket, and add the appropriate amount of coffee. Put the top water chamber section on top of the coffee filter section and add water up to the lip at the top section (about 1 2/3 cups). FIRMLY place the top on the water chamber section: the gasket fit must be very tight. Microwave on high for 3-4 minutes depending on the power of your microwave. As the water heats, it expands and forces hot water and steam through the center cone and into the grounds, where it drips through to the bottom pot. The Faberware MicroBrew was supposed to be a big event for Faberware back in the early 90s. That apparently was not the case. If you don't like it to make coffee, hang onto it for a couple of decades - it's bound to be a collectors' item!

Well I finally got a hold of someone at Farberware.. The gal put me on hold while she asked someone else... After about 5 minutes she came back and said that I couldn't use the stoneware in an oven any higher than 325 F No, I don't really believe her because when the stoneware was made it was fired at 1600 F... But, rather than taking a chance, I'm thinking about taking it back to the store, unless I can find another use for it... I read that stoneware is good for long slow cooking recipes... I also read that a lot of crockpots have stoneware liners.... Wonder if I could use my oven as a crockpot of sorts... Set the temp to, say 150 and leave the food in there all day... Hmmm, that doesn't sound healthy... lol. But what do you think? As for finding something that will take the 500 F temperature for the no kneed bread, doesn't look like I'll find anything... I called Corning and asked about all the things they make, Visions, Pyrex, stoneware and everything else and the fella said they do not recommend temps over 450 F for any of their products... Oh well, guess I'll have to try the bread at 450... Rita

I have a Farberware saftey can opener.... it was about 10 dollars and it was a gift... I so seldom use the can opener that I was fine with my traditional Pyrex Big Lots special :o) I like the Farberware so much that I need to just throw the other one out (people with big kitchens can keep 2 of everything, I am not one of them.... I can barely get the junk drawer slammed shut). If I were looking for one I would probably go with Kuhn Rikon just because of brand reputation and positive reviews. The good thing about the Farberware that I have is that it takes up less room than a traditional can opener because it doesn't "scissor" open and it leaves both the can and the lid dull... many "saftey" can openers leave the lid, but not the can dull and that's simply inane. I use a cheap plastic spaetzle maker for a ricer... I bought it thinking it was a ricer and it does do the job just fine.... though tonight I was using it (had to have mashed potatoes to go with the breaded pork chops!) and sqeezed too hard... missed the pot completely shot potatoes all over the control panel of my poor blender! A ricer is so tedious though, and the potatoes do get cold before you can rice them all. Sometimes I just use a wooden spoon! :o) Good luck on your search!

Tricia - I'm glad you like your induction range! I am not sure where Farberware is made either. Like so many things now, it might be designed one place, have components made somewhere else and final assembly done yet elsewhere. Grainlady - excellent point about the interface disk if I don't find pots I like right away. I have heard good things about Saladmaster and I see that it is still being made, so I will check it out. Lars, thanks for the recommendation. I don't have an omelet pan now; I make them (not very often) in cast iron and they don't stick, but I can't do the Julia flip with my iron skillets. I probably couldn't do it with an omelet pan either, haha -- would have to take a pan of dry beans outside to practice, as she suggested. I have been thinking it would be a good idea to have a slope-sided pan so I will take a look at the Tramontina one while I am out looking. Westsider -- I didn't think so either, but this new set of Classic does say it works on induction, and the magnet does stick. It must be a recent improvement. I need to go look at Millennium, thanks for the reminder about that. And more Tramontina too. Thank you all for weighing in! The hunt is actually pretty fun, especially knowing that I can always use an interface disk for a while -- or go to IKEA for their $10 five-piece set until I decide, and then donate it to charity later. Sometime in the mid 90's the original company was sold. No idea who owns them now but they are much lower quality than the old ones. I started collecting the Farberware Millenium, had over $1,000 into it when the 20yr guaranteed finish started wearing off. With the sale of the Company, the major Dept stores quit carrying it which meant I had to send every piece to the mfg. who then would have someone refinish it, 6-8 weeks min. So I just said %#$@&^$# it and started collecting Calphalon. Glad I did.

The new Calphalon Tri-ply stainless is really nice and you can get some good deals on it at Amazon. I love the clear lids.

If it were me, instead of buying a cheap set of pans, I would fill in with open stock good ones. Much nicer to cook with.

I bought some non-stick frying pans a year ago (Farbarware), and they were not durable at all. It was a set of 2 that I bought, an 8 inch and a 10 inch. The finish wore off after about 3 months from the outside and inside... and I had only ever used plastic or wooden utensils in them. Also, the handles came loose where they were riveted on and had play in them. But... mine weren't that expensive and they were from Wal-mart so maybe the ones from Kohls are better... especially since they are stainless steel and not non-stick. So that's my experience with the new Farberware (though I love my Farberware spoonula and box grater)... I replaced them with a 30 dollar Wearever frying pan and haven't been disappointed since.

If you buy them and like them, please report back! My stock pots are very cheap/thin and I've been looking for some decent ones.

I received a set of Farberware for a wedding present back in the late 70's, and I still use some of it now, over 30 years later. There have only been 2 problems with them; the handles have broken on a couple of the pieces, and a couple of pieces have disappeared - I think to my offspring. I found a set of 3 saucepans and lids at a garage sale for $10, and bought them for my DIL for Christmas. They looked very similar, but not identical to the ones I got back in 1977. I don't know how old they were, but they looked like they had rarely, if ever, been used.

I think I'll postpone the Farberware until I get a good look at them or find some saucepans/stock pans open stock that will fit in with the set I have. Unfortunately, I have Health Craft and what I have is all they promised, but I checked out an open stock pan and came away in shock. I could buy 5-6 Farberware Classic 15 piece sets for the price of one saucepan. I'm not that crazy! Thanks for your comments, much appreciated.
