Terrible Old Wrinkles

Hi all,

Please see the attached photo.

I have some terrible old wrinkles in an area of carpet where a rolling chair has been used in some 40 year old carpet that I need to flatten out somehow.

This carpet was glued down to sound board (particle board) when it was installed 40 years ago, but it is obviously able to be pulled up to an extent.

I'm willing to cut this awful, old, hard, indoor/outdoor carpet in order to flatten it out because I'm going to put an area rug over it, but I can't figure out where best to cut it, if needed, in order to then flatten out the wrinkles.

The only info I can find online is for normal carpet, and it tells me to rent a carpet installation tool or to hire someone, and that doesn't apply here.

Any recommendations would be very much appreciated.

That whole mess needs to be removed, particle board and all, with a new subfloor installed, and new flooring of your choice.

To hollysprings,

Since the particle board beneath the carpet is unaffected, as is the subfloor, which is actually the pine ceiling to the livingroom below, I'll not follow your advice.

I've described my plan, so I won't be having the car dismantled just because it has a flat tire.

I agree with Lisa,I don't think one bad day would do them in,Are the parents going to the box?This may be their first nesting ever,sometimes Sometimes it takes a couple of nestings with a young pair before they get it right.If you really want to try to provide food for them,I would take a shallow paper cup and tack it to the top of the box,and put some mealworms or wax worms in it,That way they can't miss them,But I would only do this for a few days,you don't want to attract other birds to the nest box.I do not recommend you bring the babies in the house,For one it is illegal,two,I doubt they would survive.And three,maybe the parents do have things under control.Most nestlings will hunker down during a nest check giving the appearance of a sleeping or weak bird.Just keep a eye on the parents,look for them to be carrying fetal sacks from the nest,If you see that then you know they are being fed.

The Creasables option increases the auto-set water level one "notch" higher than would otherwise be used so the load has more room to float (no effect if a level is selected manually), adds a cooldown rinse before the first spin, and reduces the final spin to 300 RPM/low. There's a secondary option to raise the Creasables final spin to 670 RPM/medium, you might check if that has perhaps been done, and reduce it back to 300/low to see if that helps. The cooldown rinse doesn't really do anything significant unless you're using Warm, Warm/Hot, or Hot wash. Even Warm (coupled with EcoActive) isn't all that warm unless Traditional Wash is selected. Warmer wash temp helps relax fabric so it sheds wrinkles. Perm Press cycles back in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s washed in Warm or even Hot water, then the pre-spin cooldown acted to prevent spinning while hot (which would possibly set wrinkles back into the fabric). Of course, wash temp depends on what the fabric can take, so as to avoid damage/shrinking. Intuitive should do a deep-fill agitated rinse by default unless you've programmed one of the Water Saver options. If so, change it back to an agitated rinse, see if that helps. Permanent Press on the dryer runs at Medium temp (approx 140F) ... and includes the Wrinkle Free option, which you can select yourself on any cycle. Perhaps try drying on Delicate (127F) instead. A lower temp can help reduce wrinkles by allowing more tumbling/flexing time and slower evaporation of moisture. Wrinkle Free of course doesn't do anything to the drying process itself, it only comes into play at end of the cycle if the clothes aren't immediately removed. I've found that purposely leaving a load to run for a couple hrs on the extended Wrinkle Free tumble can make for smoother/softer results.

There's a huge portion of today's paper 'In Memoriam' to the kids. They were all blonde fresh faced and adorable. All girls except the one boy. The mother is 7 months pregnant again. They are dairy farmers. The mother's parents live up the road and G -Ma was down earlier and the 2 and 3 year olds were watching TV because they weren't tired. They are guessing the 2 years old's blanket got on the propane heater or the gas stove which was turned on for heat. The story was messed up yesterday. Leah DID go to the barn to get her mother who tried to get in the house but had to run 1/4 miles to a neighbor who didn't answer and then further to another neighbor. Then she got in their car and drove to where her husband was delivering milk and found him sleeping in his truck which he did while the milk was being transferred. By the time they returned the firetrucks were there and the house was an inferno. Parents blame themselves, mother wants to leave but dairy farming is all they know on both sides of the family. They were hard working decent people, but I question why toddlers with blankets were allowed unsupervised in a house where a propane heater and gas stove were on.

My Succulents are getting soft, wrinkled, and brown, what do I do?

I thank all of you for your help. This morning I took out the problem succulents and brushed off the dirt as best they would allow. Could you help me identify what is root rot, how do the roots look if they're healthy or if they are rotted? The smaller succulents at the bottom all have relatively shorter roots, and the soil around them was dry. The bigger succulent in the top photo had tightly compact soil around its roots that I found almost impossible to break off without tearing out all its roots with it! It was completely bone dry, I think that is what you all meant by hydrophobic; it was so tight and dry no water was getting through. In the photo you can see some water droplets, where I sprayed lightly with a spray bottle onto the dry soil. All the arrangements you see above are temporary, my main goal is to prepare them all for the nice, larger planter I am creating. I live outside of the US, so I am afraid any brand names or chain stores you mention won't be of any use to me, 'tis why I am trying to make with the best I have, or find similar products by other names. I do realize I have regular potting soil, I went out and got some grit, like small pebbles and clean sand, witch which I plan to mix it altogether like suggested.

Can you get a carpet cleaner in there? If you can clean the carpet without getting it too wet, it may shrink back a little when it dries. It could also release the adhesive since it is so old and you may be able to lift the rest of the carpet to straighten or stretch it out. That's what I would try anyway before cutting. No expert here, just someone who tries to be frugal.

Particle board won't stand for getting wet. It is not a suitable substrate for your project. Removing the carpet from it will most likely leave holes where the glue won't detach and it pulls up sections of wood. Or, it will swell the PB, rendering it useless for your project.

It needs to be replaced.

I'll weigh in and try to answer the OPs original question, which is how to flatten the old carpet.

I'd cut a strip out including the wrinkles. Might need some angled cuts on the sides. Hopefully that will make the floor flat enough for the area rug you plan to use. May need to fill in the gap if its big.

Another thought - you said it is indoor-outdoor carpet. A linoleum knife (the kind with the hook on the end) might work.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm thinking the same thing, and I'm actually still looking around to see if there might have been a remnant left behind of this carpet to fill the gap after I cut out the wrinkles... I could just get a tiny remnant from a carpet store for that, then my new area rug wouldn't get a dip in it when it covers the old bad spot. The small portion of carpet where the bad spot is has already come loose, and an area to the left of it is also coming loose, so it won't be a problem to pull the bad part off the particle board.

I actually have a hook-nose carpet knife, so that's covered.

This makes more sense than anything, and I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I've got quite a few answers here, as compared to none on another forum, and your ideas on this make more sense than anything else.

It's just surgery!

Slice the arc of the wrinkle on the outside of the wrinkle (black line)

Flatten the wrinkle from the center of the area out to the new slice as best you can, making slices to relieve tension and flatten the carpet as needed.

Slice out the excess so you have a flat carpet surface.

Glue the loose carpet down

Not perfect, but it will do until you can do a real fix.

Building on what noinwi and lazy gardens have posted . . .

If you do end up cutting a piece completely out and can get decently straight edges it, I wonder if steaming might soften it up enough to maybe roll up the cut out piece so it would relax. Maybe overnight? Then use it to fill the gap.

Speaking of frugal . . . I used Contact paper on kitchen counters that were pretty terrible. ALL children learned right off the bat to CUT ON A CUTTING BOARD! I think they knew their life depended on it . . .

You guys have been a great asset, especially since you took the time to read what I wrote and gave me the info that applied to what I actually need to do, as opposed to a "gut the room and replace everything" type of answer.

I like lazygardens' thought, "It's just surgery!"... said the surgeon to the first year med student... I'm a bit squeamish about these things... where's my barf bag?!. :^)

But cutting along the black line and then pulling up the carpet to see how much I need to cut out makes perfect sense... I couldn't see the forest for the trees, or the carpet for the floor, as it were.

I'll let you know how it goes in a few days and maybe I'll even include a new picture of the wound once it's been operated on, before I put down the area rug.
