Outside unit continues to run

Every now and then, the outside portion of my heat pump continues to run even though the house has reached the set temerature. The inside blower turns off. When this happens, there is nothing I can do to stop the outside unit short of closing the breaker and turning it on. Even setting the thermostat to off doesn't stop it. Then the heat pump will work properly for a couple of weeks. Happens in cold and hot weather.

I an very leery about calling a repair man. I got stuck a couple of times when I discovered a problem but the problem stopped when the technician came. I wound up paying a total of over $600 for changing the ouside fan motor because I was charged when he could find nothing wrong the first visit. I told him the fan stopped before he came, but it was running when he came and he had no problem charging me $130 for that visit plus the charge when the fan stopped again that afternoon.

Should I simply wait until I have a permanent failure? I don't catch the outside unit acting this way right away, can this damage it? Thanks

You could have a short in the control wiring or the contactor is sticking. Look at the contactor and see if the contacts are pitted and/or black. If it is change it.

+1 on what Steve said,if what you are saying is fact. On the other hand what you described is common during cold weather for air to air heat pumps defrosting. If the contactor is sticking,yes it can severly harm the compressor. Forgive me for doupting your accuracy but I find it strange anyone who frets over their system as you say you do would alow it to continue from one season and through the next before asking.

Place a thermometer inside and adjust the thermostat based on that. The numbers on the thermostat are arbitrary and don't reflect actual temperature inside. Don't guess at it. Use a thermometer. Aim for no higher than 0Â°F. A little lower such as -4Â°F or -5Â°F is even better. If the unit can't maintain that (and it shouldn't have to run continuously to do so), then something is wrong, it's not cooling enough. If the thermometer reads lower than you want, you adjust the thermostat higher, and the temp reading doesn't change and the unit keeps running continuously, then something is wrong (bad thermostat).

A test like that is not accurate unless the parameters are tightly controlled and all contributing factors noted. The meter reading includes all household electric use, not just the heat pump. Cooking? Bathing? Dishwashing? Laundry? Sunshine vs. overcast? Wet vs. dry weather (affects heat pump defrost frequency)? Did the 3Â°F recovery involve use of auxiliary heat strips? 2Â°F and 3Â°F setback is very minimal. More savings is potentially garnered with larger setbacks. I'm in TX. We had a rare snowfall during a wet norther on Dec 4. After that Dec 4 weather incident, I didn't run the central heating (heat pump) for several weeks. Instead, I used a space heater only in the bedroom at night. I noted that even with occasional nighttime temps into the upper 30Â°Fs, the unheated rooms in my house rarely dropped below 60Â°F. So ... if I had been running the heat pump at 70Â°F normal with a 2Â°F setback (68Â°F), it still would run to maintain 68Â°F during the setback periods ... but an 8Â°F to 10Â°F setback (setpoint of 62Â°F or 60Â°F), it would run very little during the setback periods, if at all. That'd make a difference on KWH usage in regards to setback vs. none.

I have a Lennox 10a 64bc10p air conditioner unit, which is a two zone air conditioner. I turned the main floor switch to cool mode first, which works fine. After several hours, I turned the second floor switch to cool mode, and it suddenly stopped blowing air to both floors. The air conditioner unit outside (compressor?) was still running. I turned off the air conditioner, and turned on the fan only, which works (the blower works?). I thought it maybe the control board problem. I also tried turning on the air conditioner for a few minutes and turning it backoff, the vent blew cool air for couple minutes and then stopped. (does this mean the compressor works?). I checked and replaced the filter. But now if I turn on the air conditioner and then turn it off, the outside unit continues running, it should not be. (Is this a contactor problem?)

dave Is it just the outside condensing unit that continues to run or do both the outside unit and the attic air handler continnue to run? If only the outside unit then yes you probably do have a contactor that is stuck closed and will need to be replaced. You can test your contactor by removing the low voltage (24 volts) control wires from the base of the contactor then power back up and try the unit again, if the contactor is still pulled in (stuck closed) and the compressor and fan still run on the outside unit without the control wiring attached then yes the contactor is bad. Note you will need to cut the power off for the outside unit PLUS the attic air handler to shut off all the power. The attic air handler contains the 24 volt transformer and if you do not shut it down there could still be 24 volts coming to the outside unit thru the low voltage wiring. be careful out there people. I would never ever touch any electrical device unless it is proved to be off using a known good and correctly set voltage meter to check it. If you do not have a volatge tester and do not have some knowledge of how to use one please have someone else check the unit out.

Steve - Thanks. Next time the unit does this, I am going to see if both the fan and the compressor are running. So far, all I have done is look out the window and observe that the fan is running. If only the fan is running, good chance it is the contactor, right? Short in control voltage circuit would affect all contacts, I assume. Also, if the problem only affects the fan, I am not in a hurry to fix this old system.

Klem - Thanks. As I tried to describe in my post, I am a little gun shy when it comes to calling a repair man for an intermittent problem. If I call him and the heat isn't working and he leaves with the heat working, good. But if I call him and the problem can't be demonstrated at the time, I feel cheated when he comes, spends 10 minutes, leaves saying there is nothing wrong but when he comes back again the $130 "truck fee" from the first visit doesn't apply to the repair (see original post above). As for fretting over my system, there is no doubt I am near the end of the life cycle for this R-22 system and don't want to spend any more than I have to fixing it up. I would have replaced it already but for the fact that the fancoil is in a very tight crawlspace (I think you reponded to my post last month).

Does your thermostat take batteries? If so, when's the last time you changed them?

This was my problem when this happened on on of my units :/

docno - Thanks. My thermostat doesn't use batteries. However, it appears that I have a hard failure now. The outside unit stays on all the time as long as power is applied. Now I feel comfortable about calling for service. Hopefully, it will stay broken until he comes.
