Comments (9)I thank you all for your help. I guess I am just going to limp along with this piece of junk that I'm stuck with until I can get a new one. Raven, yes I did spend too much for it but 50 cents would have been far too much. Being not too bright, I'm not going to the site you recommended because I would have no way of doing the right thing unless I wait for my Granddaughters to come and walk me through it. But as long as I'm not going to keep this pile of trash I guess I don't need the information anyway. Thanks again for your help and who was it said, "there's a fool born every minute"? Well, guess I got that right anyway. lol...See MoreWhy do ppl do stupid stuff to kitchens for resale?
Comments (40)After looking at quite a few houses for sale a few years ago, we decided to buy a brand new house. The houses we had looked at for sale either had dumb stuff done to them, or the owners just really didn't care, both of which were a big turn off for us. So we went for the new build. We needed to get a good price for our old house(built approx 1987), so we took about 4 months (while the new one was being built)and really looked at what needed to be done to help it sell. At the time, the market was relatively hot, so the better your product, the more likely you were to sell. It was in relatively good shape, but did need some work. We basically did things that we would have done anyway if we were going to stay there. We had it re-piped (the older houses around here are notorious for defective/degrading steel pipe). This was our biggest expense, approx $5K. We would have had to disclose it to the buyer and either lower the price or offer an allowance for it, so we figured that having it already done would be a selling point. We finished repairing and repainting the walls that were damaged in an earthquake. We tiled the floors in the kitchen and one of the bathrooms that had horrible ugly vinyl with a nice, light neutral ceramic tile (great buy on discontinued item). We repaired/replaced anything functional that needed it, front porch roof, side garage door, hanging light fixture, etc. We also cleaned everything, put excess items in storage, and had someone come in to cut back/clean up the landscaping. It took more than a weekend to fix it up, and we spent a little money, but I think the results were worth it. The first people who looked at it bought it for the asking price. We had two realtors call and ask to look at it because they had similar houses in the neighborhood that weren't selling and wanted to find out why ours had sold. There were plenty of other things we could have done, but I think we did a good job of picking those that helped the house sell, actually improved the property, and didn't take a horrendous amount of time or money to accomplish....See MoreOT - how stupid does it get?
Comments (28)Thanks everyone for the block info. Kath summed it up very well. Over here a 'Block of flats' 'Tower block' all refer to solid structures never the land on which they are built. As you might say vacant lot for an empty piece of land, we would say building plot. I think the technical term for building land is 'parcel', or really ancient but used in legal documents messuage or curtilage (from the Norman French). You might hear someone say "I'm just going to walk the dog round the block" but that is just an Americanism! Frieda we have no similar 'home-grown' expression for distance and tend to talk in terms of 'hundred yards' 'half a mile' 'up the hill, round the corner and left at the zebra crossing' We have yet to use kilometers altho' the Govt is working on it! Re the woman on the boat (and this is where it is so much easier talking face-to-face) my point in connection with the heading of the thread was that she should have known better than to use the term block in such an inappropriate situation and among people who have no understanding of the expression. I was with my Mother at the time who didn't hesitate in decribing the woman as a 'loud New Yorker' . . .with apologies to anyone from that City, but DM's family came from VA and considered themselves to be gracious, elegant, courteous, gentlemanly, honourable and RIGHT about everything. :-) It is unlikely the rude woman was drunk as the cost of booze in Norway is/was truly sky-high. I notice that most American friends describe travelling in terms of hours rather than miles. If we used that method in the UK it would be meaningless as it can take half an hour to drive 5 miles on our narrow, overcrowded roads....See Moreamcofar
