It's 20 right now in NE Texas and getting in the teens later during the night

Stupid neighborhood cat went out She and friend visit for free meals She'll be back

Below you here in mid E Texas, we are expecting about 15o. When I was out about 8:00 PM my car registered 24.
My crazy cat stayed out all night. He is not able to court, maybe he was just watching. He is under my feet right now and not getting out again.

We had -4F here near Santa Fe, NM back in December. We don't usually get the cold snaps the same time as either coasts, so the lowest we've been recently is around 12. As few would realize, being at the same latitude as the Carolinas, we average two nights below zero each winter, and a warm winter might mean one or two nights in the single digits. But then again, we usually clear freezing by midday, since our daytime/nighttime temperatures can span 30 or 40 degrees. Even though our low temps may be similar to places much farther north, winter here is vastly more pleasant, especially with a passive solar house! More often than not we don't even need supplemental heat! At least you can all take comfort from the fact that these temps are coming during the coldest time of the year, so it's not likely to get any colder, and the plants are quite dormant!

Owie, Well, it must be nice to stay warmer than the forecast. That only happens here in August. LOL Have fun with your new Min-Max thermometer and keep us entertained with your annal details of every temperature change. LOL Randy, I bet the plants are whispering excitedly to one another and asking themselves who gets to go first when the slow exodus begins. : ) After tonight, the 40s pretty much go away for us and we're looking at 50s/70s which is some of my favorite weather. As for rain, let it rain, let it rain, let it rain! Summer will be here all too soon and we'll forget what rain is. They are supposed to be very hardy, so I'm guessing being dry may have been the cause. Anyways there is residual snow from christmas until usually the middle of March here so I really doubt dryness will be an issue. My plan is to use either leaf bags, dried leaves with a tarp over them or just dried leaves since the snow insulates pretty well. I am aware that with most plants, their first winter is their toughest, especially if they are growing in pots. Were the pots buried into the ground at all? If you left the pots simply sitting on top of the soil without burying them into the ground, that will cause the root balls to freeze which restricts the water to the plant. The only exceptions I've seen are fruit trees, blueberry plants or alliums which don't seem to mind getting their roots frozen solid.

They did great last night. We let them in at bedtime. Sophie stayed on the blankets we put down in the floor. Homer came back to bedroom and jumped up in the middle of the bed. I told him "Get down. Go stay with Sophie." and he did. They slept in the kitchen all night. Not a single problem. Hope it goes this well tonight. We have an old rug in the garage and we are just gonna put it down in front of the sliding glass door for Sophie. The rug will stay in place better than blankets and give her more room. We are expected to have the coldest night of the season tonight.

Right now it is 1.8 "Above" That's pretty warm for Mid- Jan in Minnesota.

I really feel bad for all those down south who are having all that unusual cold. They just aren't set up for it.

I woke up to 2 degrees here in the Texas panhandle, but it is supposed to get up to 22 today. At least the wind is not blowing like it usually is.

Almost noon and it's zero with a -19 windchill. Got the driveway cleared and the sidewalks shoveled, now it's time to warm up.

It was 2 when I took the dogs out this morning. I wasn't going out today but Meals on Wheels called yesterday and said they had a cancellation and asked if I would deliver today. Actually today doesn't seem as cold as yesterday when the wind was blowing.

1 PM and 2Â°, probably about -15Â° for a windchill. Doesn't take much of a breeze to get it cold. Double digits below for tonight. Few more days and it'll lighten up a bit. High 20s for the end of the week and the nights should ease when we get on the back side of the cell and suck up some of that "warm" southern air!

The schools were all worried about getting the buses going this morning. I wouldn't think today should be all that much different than the last week or so. Letting them run for 1/2 hour or more to warm them up but they were starting them anywhere from about 4 AM on.

Sun is bright but we likely won't squeak out much more than another degree or two I wouldn't think.

Not sure what it is right now...but it's been -2 most of the day. It will be getting down to -20 tonight...

I have Miss Kitty tucked away in her cat cave, and it is covered with 4 blankets and she had two of the large hand warmers tucked under her.

But it's gona be darn cold here tonight...another day of this extreme cold and I think it is supposed to break. Sun. is supposed to be in the 30's....I'll believe it when I see it (or feel it)

Supposed to get down to 36 tonight. Kim...let your water trickle overnight. That is what we did when we lived in Iowa in the winter time.

Still no water. I left it dripping, I should have left it streaming. It's never frozen before, but it usually doesn't get down to 5 degrees. Sunday is supposed to be 38.

It's 6 degrees at 4:15.

The evergreens report there to be minimal wind ... I didn't go out to check, as too lazy to change boots and not enthused about tracking snow and dirt in to kitchen ... and carpeted area, here.

ole joyful - in need of some hot air: 62 in here, usually stays about 60, as directed by the little box on the wall
