Heat Pump vs Propane/air conditioning

I am posting this for my general interest even though I don't currently have a problem with my Lennox heat pump. Mine is 11 years old and the service man told me the average life for these is 13 years. I live in Eastern Wsshington and the summers are very hot and dry. Often get to the 100 degree temps and most days are 90s with a few 80s. Winters are usually in the 20s to 40s with a few in the 0 to 20 area. I have friends that heat with gas (natural) and air condition and have much lower year round average operating expense than I do. We don't have a natural gas line in our neighborhood so I was wondering if propane would be a viable option.
