hard starts for heatpump/AC compressors

I read somewhere that with newer R-410A systems they have a tendency to start harder (outside unit will make a thud noise as it starts, and inside lights will flicker).

I think thats probably true because my newer unit (which is R-410) does this sometimes.

I also heard that if you don't have a hard-start kit on your unit, hard starts will make your compressore wear out pre-maturely. Is this true?

Is hard starting bad? Is it worth paying someone to come out and add a hard-start kit? How much does this cost typically?

I've never had problems with breakers flipped or any other problems with the unit. I'm just hoping to disppell some mythes or possibly spend some money on my equipment to make it last longer.
