Hi. I have neck injury and have just started going to a chiropracter for therapy...I am wondering what experiences others have had, what I should perhaps be looking for...It seems that there are different techniques and machines and therapies, and I frankly do not have a lot of confidence in a profession that claims to be able to prevent or cure nearly everything with "adjustments", but this type care seems to be more logical for my problem than what an ortho or neuro MD would offer. Does anyone have experience you'd like to share with me?

I am going out on a limb here but I went to a chiropractor for 5 years and yes, he did my back some good. But, I never could quit going. It's like I never got "well." In those years I went to him I bought alot of the herbs, vitamins, minerals and supplements he suggested. I had a slew of the stuff both liquid,tablet and capsule. Slow release, fast release I probably even had one that said no release.
Then one day I was looking at one of those shopping channels and came upon this thing you strap yourself in and it turns you upside down. I bought it. Hey, I could send it back in 30 days if I didn't like it. Besides it only cost about 3 visits to the chiro. My husband thought I was mad. But walla..... with occasional use I am doing fine. Back no longer is in pain... and what is so funny is my husband uses it more that I do!!! I wasn't so mad.
Now, I do not know how bad your neck is, and I would not want you to hurt yourself but you might want to at least look into this...it helped me.

I know people who have been helped and think their chiro. is wonderful, and I know people who thought their chirop. hurt them.

It's so good to read of how others are dealing with the repetitive stress and health issues. I recently learned I have 2 disc problems in my neck and degenerative arthritis in my lower spine as well as the known tendonitis and worn out hand and shoulder issues I was aware of. So now at least I understand the pain. I am having to relearn how to do things, many of which were adaptions from before having my knees replaced 4 years ago. Fortunately my husband, who used to be traveling more much of the year, just retired. He doesn't particularly like yard work but he will help me out with the heavy things. I wish he got some joy from the garden itself. He does like bragging about my garden to his friends :-) I Am 65 and intend to die gardening at 95 so it is devastating to have to sit back and watch the weeds grow! I've been through the whole range of feelings about whether I should give up part of my garden that brings me so much joy. 3 days ago I got cortisone injections in my neck and now I can move around the house without pain. That is encouraging. I get the injections in my lower back in about 10 more days. But I know now that I have to do my work in much smaller increments and as Karl and Reg say, there are just some things you learn not to do. My biggest issue right now is invasive weeds in my rose beds...Buttercup and Bishops Weed (I think), and a few others. I get it cleaned out then hurt myself and can't get back to it until it is all grown up weeds again. Also, last years strange winter killed off all my weaker roses. I have ordered replacements from Palatine so there will be a lot of prep needed this winter...if only we could figure out how to get the beds cleaned out. I am thinking a good weeding with HUbby doing the digging while I pull out the roots form the loosened soil, them a deep mulching with straw. I won't use chemicals because I run an organic flower business. I am hoping for some "On site" teaching from my physical therapist, with my husband involved if we can find some decent weather to do this. I would so love to hear more of the tricks you other aging gardeners have come up with! I have tried a little garden scoot thing but it doesn't help with the bending over to weed or plant.I don't have a problem with pruning as long as I use the sharp tools and hubby will haul away the prunings. He is also good at hauling loads of compost for me. He helps me plant the roses when they come. He is totally uninterested in them. He only does it because he loves me. I have about 130 roses in several different areas. None of them are doing as well as they could. This year hubby was traveling much of the time and I was unable to get them even fertilized with all the crappy weather, then so much to do at once.

No, I don't know an "official name" for the test. Checking the heart rate (number of beats per minute) and respiration rate (number of breaths per minute) are exactly that - heart rate and respiration rate. But the statement "200 being good and my number was 16" is counterindicative of those two rates being checked. The average (note I said "average" and not "normal") respiration rate for an adult at rest is 12-20 per minute (women generally would be at the lower end, men at the higher end). The averge (again, "average," not "normal") resting heart rate has a larger variance, 60-80 beats per minute. It's at the lower end (and can even be lower than 60 bpm) for people who are very physically fit. It can vary depending on whether you're lying down or sitting up, etc., and it rises with age. If your respiration rate was 16, I'd call that good. A respiration rate of 200 is not good. If your heart rate was 16, I wouldn't call that good (unless you're an extremely physically fit pro athlete, and even then it would be too low), but a heart rate of 200 is definitely not good. Another device that can operate by a clip on the earlobe would be a pulse oximeter. This displays the amount of oxygen saturation in your blood, as a percentage of what it should be. The "normal" range is 95% to 100%. If your "pulse ox" is down to 16, you should be hospitalized, but it shouldn't be 200! So..... As I said in an earlier post, I completely agree that a person's heart and respiration rates can be indicative of stress, and stress can cause pain. But, the woman's comment that "200 is good" is not a comment that makes sense when talking about heart and respiration rates or oxygen saturation levels. If I were you, I'd be contacting that office for a further, and more thorough, explanation.

Yup...GROAN...it's forever...unless the Supreme Court rules that the government cannot force people to carry medical insurance....saying that it's unconstitutional. If they do that...in the coming year...the Feds will have to drop the penalty. I did contest it when it was imposed as my error was not intentional. I hadn't been informed by my late husband's insurance carrier that I was required to carry Part D. I use no prescriptive drugs so I guess they assumed I didn't need to be concerned about it. WRONG! They did tell me that I had to replace the Supplemental policy and I did so immediately. I should say that all my health benefits died the minute [literally] that my husband died due to an irreversible benefits decision that he'd made long before I met and married him. And my ignorance of his benefits package was not intentional. They would never allow me access to anything. If my husband didn't deal with them nothing got done. In any case...Medicare partly found in my favor...erasing 8 months from the penalty formula...but leaving the remaining 36 months using the excuse that ignorance is no excuse when it comes to the law. So...I now pay 1% times a yearly Federally elected dollar figure times 36 [months] and that amount is added to my monthly premium. It usually amounts to about $15/mo. And it makes me a very unhappy camper considering that my only source of income is SS and I still have a mortgage to pay each month...not to mention all the other little life necessities that come along with daily survival. So...for anyone who's age 65 or about to become age 65...talk to a SS or Medicare representative and enroll in a Medicare approved Part D program ASAP. If you don't...you could end up being penalized like me when you do elect to enroll in a Part D program...or when it's discovered that you're not enrolled in a plan. It's been mandatory since 2006. Learn from my mistake! Or gamble that the Supreme Court will find in our favor...knocking the whole forced insurance program out of the ball park. Anne

Zalco, (re your feeling that the definition of 'partnership' would not hold up for a patient/doctor relationship) you said "Doctors do not bring one set of skills to the table while patients bring another set. Doctors bring medicine, patients bring their health, either it's maintenance or it's remediation to the table. Even when a doctor is a patient outside of her specialty, the set up is similar." I'm in agreement that patients do not bring to the table the skills that their doctors have, with their numerous years of rigorous medical training. But it is now being taught that patients bring valuable knowledge to the table, by having specific information the physician lacks. This is everything pertaining to their symptoms. It is vital information to add to the physician's trained skills, in order to bring about an accurate and expedient diagnosis. I assume that's why they named their objective 'Patients as Partners.' This in no way implies that the patient has equal medical expertise as their physician. It simply means that physicians are now being taught to engage in more communication with their patients. The old adage 'Children should be seen and not heard' was often applied to patients as well. But now this is recognized as detrimental to optimal health care. For those who don't already have a good communicative relationship with their physicians, at least their children probably will, thanks to how the next generation of med students are being trained. Elmer, if you're still reading this thread, thanks for informing me that 'Ivy League' universities are only in the U.S. I was under the (wrong) impression that the few universities ranking highest in the U.S. U.K. and Canada were somehow also referred to that way (maybe because they are all very old, lol) so I'm happy to be corrected on that. Yes, my specialist did pursue the same line of investigation (believing it to be an autoimmune problem) as my GP, so no 'superfluous steps and tests were wasted.' But my most telling symptom did not appear until after I'd been referred to the specialist, who was able to pinpoint the precise condition, because of that specific information.

It depends on the chiropractor and his/her particular philosphy of chiropractic medicine. I had an awful experience several years ago with one who practiced the bogus "I can cure all that ails you" method by cracking my back and neck every week. I felt strongly against having my neck adjusted but he insisted. Finally I decided I'd had enough of the hard-sell nonsense and stopped going, but even that required twisting his arm to get out of it.

I posted my story on my web site which is currently down, but I have had two chiropractors from two parts of the country send me email to say that my story is representative of BAD chiropractic care.

Look up "bad chiropractor" and you should find at least some of the links I have posted at my site.

Whatever you do, DON'T sign a contract up front agreeing to go 3x/week for several weeks, then 2x/week for a few weeks, then tapering off to a "maintenance" schedule of once a week for any length of time (which will turn into eternity because your spine will then be dependant on being adjusted every week).

If something doesn't seem right, STOP GOING. If I had listened to myself right from the start, I would have saved several hundred dollars.

If I were you I'd go to an orthopedic specialist and request a referral to a good physical therapist who can perform (and teach you) exercises to heal and strengthen your neck. If your chiropractor practices the philosophy described at the link below, then you may be in good hands.

The link below will inform you about the scope of proper chiropractic care. Be sure to read the second paragraph under "INTRODUCTION"... but the rest of the page is informative as well. Also check out the links at the bottom of the page. By then, you will be a lot more informed than I was before my experience. If I can steer one person away from that type of care then it will have been worth it.

Thank you Jenn, that is so valuable! I am sorry you had to learn from bad experience--that is what I want to avoid. Likewise, rthummer. I will talk these things over with the chiro I am seeing. So far there have been no attempts to sell packages, supplements, and she did show me exercises to do at home. But, if I don't feel improvement after 2 weeks I will head to an MD. Thanks again!
