If he's always making deliveries and usually does a good job, I wouldn't have complained. He probably is comfortable and just assumed it was okay to deliver to either address and under the circumstances, I wouldn't want a complaint to get him in trouble or go on his personnel record. I would just wait to mention my preference to him and why the next time I saw him.

I think you were right to complain. Just last week we returned from a vacation only to find one UPS package at the front door in full view and another at the side door. I had stopped my mail and called UPS to have the packages put in a lift up top box on my deck, nothing was in it. I complained.

I just got a call from the delivery service asking for clarification. I simply asked if they could deliver to the address on the package (I would think they'd have a GPS system). When I have to haul large bulky items back and forth because they don't deliver to the assigned address it gets annoying. In our area we don't always have the same driver (or there's a lot of turnover). I really didn't want to get the driver in trouble - it was more a statement to their service....deliver items where people ask them to be sent. That's why I was feeling guilty - I was concerned it would get a driver in trouble.

I'm sure one complaint will not get the driver fired. I, too, don't understand why the driver would take it upon him/herself to change the delivery address. I can sort of see if your addresses were many miles apart, and on that particular day it might have been more convenient to drop it off at the home address. (Not to excuse it, but to understand a reason.) But, your locations are a very short distance apart.
I am wondering if the driver saw your name and just did not pay attention this time to which place it was going.
It does matter to you which place your items go, so you were not out of line to ask that your packages be delivered to the address on the package.

I way I read your post was with the take that it was the same guy all the time. Where we live that's the case and you get to know them after a while. If it's a different driver all the time then yeah I'd probably place a call.

These companies really push those guys to the limits when it comes to the amount of time they have to deliver. I bet they cut every corner possible to get those packages to the door and meet deadlines. With that in mind I'd be willing to bet that that's why it even happened.

That seems so strange that they would deliver a package to an address that's not on the package. I would think they would be required to deliver as addressed. Maybe things are different in a small town atmosphere. Maybe he thought you would be home by that time and was doing you a favor to deliver at your house?

That does seem odd. But giving him the benefit of the doubt, if he was running late (after typical office closing time) he might have thought he was doing you a favor by bringing it to the house. That we you get it that day and not the next day.

I have a different beef with UPS. We live semi-rurally, also, and we have a gate at the street and dogs. Sometimes a driver will put a box at the gate and sort of hide it with pine straw. I'm fine with that. But sometimes it's something that requires a signature, and I have to wait at home/come home to wait for it during the designated time frame, and get/keep the dogs inside for the duration. (And it's always something for DH, who works much farther away so it's always me having to be inconvenienced, but I digress . . .)

One time the time frame was 10-2, or something similar. I went down at 9:45 to open the gate and found a sticker that he had already been there. When I called UPS to complain, I was told that the time frames were just approximations, and that the delivery could be any time during the day. Then why put the stinkin' time frame boxes on the slip?!?! I kvetched enough that they agreed to have him come back by at the end of his route and leave it.

Another time I waited at home for something that the sticker on the gate the day before said required a signature. The driver came toward the end of the 2-3-hour block and just LEFT IT ON THE PORCH WITHOUT KNOCKING OR GETTING A SIGNATURE! I was livid. Clearly he just wanted the dogs put up and the gate open so he could drive up and leave it on the porch rather than at the gate, and thought the best way to accomplish that would be to tell me I needed to wait around for a signature.

I guess we have been lucky! We, too are somewhat rural but I have had no problems with deliveries to the house. I didn't think most things required a signature anymore, I know our Fed Ex or UPS guy never ring the doorbell - they just leave the package. If it's something I might worry about being left outside, I have it sent to work.

I'm not sure a driver would be allowed to enter someone's garage to leave a package???

In the past items were typically set inside our house garage door. More and more I'm finding they're left on the front step instead. Tinam61, that's one of the reasons I've started transitioning things over to our office address. I used to be at the house all the time, but now I'm at the office. Guess I'll have to specify "Office" on both the name portion and address portion to clarify delivery point.

The ironic part of all this is that awhile back I scheduled a delivery for my house and then got a notice that a signature was required. I called to ask if they could then switch the delivery point to my office location and was told no, they could only deliver to the address on the package. OK fine, but then why did they deliver this recent package to my house when I specifically listed the office address?

Luckily, we have never had any problems with a delivery being taken, so for most things I'm fine with having it delivered to the house, even on a day we're not there. I'm not sure why you are showing two different addresses (name and address portions) of maybe I'm misunderstanding you LOL.

Lat Christmas season, DH ordered two items, one pricey, one very pricey. He checked the delivery status log religiously and found that the packages had been delivered. But they were nowhere to be seen. Long story short. Two weeks later, a neighbor came by with the packages. They had been sitting out at the house next to his, and the folks who lived there were in Africa for an extended stay.
The very next day, the deliveryman came by. He was panicked, because he stopped by the house where he had delivered the packages, only to find they were gone.
P.S. That didn't stop him from delivering packages in full view of anyone passing by. We used to get packages hidden by our shrubbery.

The person who decides what can be a door drop or not is the
shipper.
The amount they pay for the various services off-set the cost
of a possible claim due to thief.
Directing complaints to the co. shipping the item will get
a better response if it's a large co.
I ordered an item from Amazon that claimed to be "left at doorstep"
Emailed that I had not received and they replaced it upgraded to overnight service.
Being a union co. one complaint to UPS will not affect the
driver.

Hilltop~ Certain items can not have a change of address per the shippers contract .
Dell requires you contact them to change the address not the courier .
To deliver to an address that is not on the pkg is just strange.
He must have thought he was doing you a favor .
About the delivery window,it's an estimate which converts to an "end of day" if not accomplished.
Why they bother is beyond me .
The driver never knows what priority deliveries he may have
on board that have a 9,10:30 or 12 guarantee.

Thanks forboystoo - that provided some insight. You must have experience in that department. You're right - he/she probably thought they were doing me a favor, or, they just looked at our name and didn't realize that we have two delivery locations - one for the home and one for the shop/office.

Also I will not go into the garage due to liability.
It's a crap-shot as to weather or not I will open a gate.
Due to liability I will only step one foot into your house to carry a pkg for you.
(There was a driver accused of stealing money off a coffee table when he went in to pick-up a pkg.)

9 times out of 10 if your pkg is damaged it's due to poor pkging.
If you can not hold the item waist high and drop it
don't ship it.

One more thing...
Some high value items will only be shipped to the address on the credit card due to credit card theft.

I do not work for UPS but the stories I could tell you
as to the demands management puts on them is shocking.
The vehicles are starting to be equipped with sensors so management knows when your butt is in the seat,what door is open,where you are,is the seat belt engaged, and where you stepped to get into the vehicle.

Interesting into, forboys. I think all of this does have to do with theft, but also not everyone has a good work ethic. Why work eight hours when you can get eight hours pay but slack off for two?

Also an online shopper! Having the same situation as far as living in a rural area, I always waive the signature when purchasing. I would prefer the packages to be left, and have never had a problem with any deliveries not arriving when expected. We also have the same delivery person with UPS and FedEx, so they are familiar with our setup.

I have to say that I am not at all saddened by the demise of DHL. They were terrible. Despite waivers with many online purchases, they refused to leave my packages.
