ringing sound in head (tinnitus?)

For probably a couple of months now, I have had this constant ringing (hard to describe the sound) in my head. During the day when I am busy and there are other noises, I can forget about it--but, when I go to bed or sit down to read the paper, etc. or right now when I am sitting at the computer, it is there. Any thoughts? Is this possibly tinnitus? Does anyone have this or have any ideas what is causing it? Thank you so much. Jeanie

It sure sounds like tinnitis to me. When was your last hearing test?

Thanks for responsing, Heather. I don't seem to have any problem with my hearing, though I haven't ever had a hearing test. However, I did make an appointment with my doctor for tomorrow so maybe he will have some ideas.

There are too many reasons why people get tinnitus.. Doctors will only guess. Mine started a couple of weeks after I hit my head. Some days are worse than others. Dr. told me that it's possible I will eventually lose my hearing but so far my hearing has not diminished. It seems to almost go away when I take my supplements regularly, mostly antioxidants and cholesterol lowering statin but I may have to quit that as I'm starting to get muscle pains again. I had it while taking blood pressure med which I discontinued after I read the side effects. I now control my BP with magnesium daily and my tinnitus is barely heard sometimes. If it's driving you crzy there are devices they can insert to override the sound with soothing sounds.

I went through all this in 1995, the doctors were sure I had a glomus tomor on the vagus nerve, the MRI seemed to confirm it, so they ordered a arteriogram to see exactly what was going on in preparation for the surgery which was to be scheduled later. It did turn out to be a large caratid artery that was close to the bone. It was a very scary process b/c from November to February, until the arteriogram proved otherwise, I had that tunor. From what my dr at the time had told me, glomus tumors are fairly common and can be easily removed depending on their location. So try to relax, it may all work out no matter whar. A friend of mine's mother did require surgery for this, and although the recovery period in here case was long, she is doing well now. My Dr decided I could have a fissure, for which did have surgery topatch the eardrum. Some ear doc's don't even believe they occur, This actually did lessen the pulsating tinnitus, it lasted for several months until I yelled loudly at my teenage son to get the heck out of bed to go to school, and it blew out. I felt the difference immediately. I returned to the dr's, this time a different Dr, as mine had been transferred, this was at Walter Reed Hospital, and the Dr I saw said he didn't believe in fissures, even though the testing performed followinig the surgery showed improvement in my hearing.

Rosefolly - What a surprise to find someone here whose father invented the very thing we're talking about! Since I didn't touch the epoxy (wore new workmen's cotton gloves), that isn't what caused my skin to react. It was on my face only. The lumps were below the skin surface. But, it was combined w/ paint; so the mix is maybe what did it? After the anti-biotics, my skin was as smooth as glass. And the project? A great success. I'd painted the porcelain wall tiles, tub, sink, toilet in my new apartment. Not only did it look custom-made, but it shone as if all new. Even scrubbing w/ scouring powder didn't mar the finish -- that's why epoxy is needed in the paint. People asked me if I'd had the bathroom remodeled...a neighbor saw it, did his w/ epoxy paint, too. In spite of my little debaucle w/it , I recommended it to everyone. Sarah Canary - Maybe one reason "Smilla's Sense of Snow" appeals to us so much is because we're both January babies? ... As to the characters -- I'm not having any problems keeping them straight in my mind. Could be because they have such different first and last names...makes it easier. Yes, I agree, the atmosphere is a big part of this story -- really sets the mood.

My Tinnitus is the high-pitched buzzing, somewhat like the sound locusts make on a hot summer day, but steady rather than rising and falling. I've had it a number of years now, no idea what may have caused it I do take pain medication regularly, and have for a very long time, and I've had cortisone shots in my shoulders. I don't think I've ever read where either of these things could cause the Tinnitus, so that's a rather interesting concept to me. There was a time when I would get severe headaches from it, but not so often anymore. I guess I've finally gotten used to it. My hearing has gotten bad over the last 5 or 6 years, but I don't know it the Tinnitus causes that or not. When I got hearing aids a couple of years ago, I got the kind that is supposed to help the Tinnitus. They would emit a serious of soft, supposedly soothing sounds that would cut the Tinnitus sounds. No such luck, it only contributed to the headaches. So needless to say, I never turn that feature on. Nor do I have any radio or TV on as background sound, it drives me nuts! In fact, it is not unusual for me to get very irritating headaches, even when trying to watch a movie or program I am interested in. No matter how interesting, it always sounds so good when I turn it off! ! ! Yeah, I know, I'm weird. .. . . . Rusty

It does sound like tinnitus, did you go to a concert recently? Or been in a loud place for a significant period of time?

I've had this for several years and saw several doctors----apparently there is very little that can be done. The ringing at night sometimes drives me crazy, but running a fan helps. I tried a radio on at night, but found that I couldn't sleep with it on. May want to try one of these.

I have one ear that almost always rings or feels/sounds like it is plugged or in a tunnel. Did all the ear tests, etc. The ear dr. recommended taking Niacin and it really does seem to help me! Maybe it would help you.

I have also had this problem and have found that it was worse after I drank diet coke. I decreased the amount of coke, coffee and tea I was drinking and have noticed a marked improvement. Perhaps this can help someone like it did me. Judy

The ringing in my hubby's ear was a horrible problem for him, but he finally found an ear doctor who helped him. Very simple - eliminate salt from your food. Sure worked for him, and it won't hurt you to try it.
