Question about insurance screen results

I got a life insurance screen back (they drew blood and urine sample). It came back that my Hemoglobin Screen was positive. What does that mean? Also Hyaline Casts measured 430 and normal is 0-10.

Protein level was 100 normal is 0-30. Microalbumin measured at 57.1 normal is 0-3. Does this mean I have some type of kidney problems? I intend to take the results to the Dr but would like some info first. I am overweight and do have untreated high BP. Thanks for any information.

Hemoglobin comes from red blood cells when they are lysed or destroyed. The protein could come from the same problem. With untreated hypertension, you could be lysing red blood cells, causing the hemoglobin and protein results. Could also be that you have narrow blood vessels caused by plaque build ups, which can also lyse RBCs. Could have any number of diseases, including tick-born diseases that also lyse RBCs. Really the screen is just that- a screen, meant to alert the DR to potential underlying problems, which it sounds like you have. You will probably need more tests to determine the cause of the hemoglobin, casts, microalbumin, etc.
Hypertension can also cause kidney damage causing the microalbumin and hyaline casts. That said, you REALLY need to speak to a doctor sooner rather than later. Schedule a longer than normal appointment to make sure you can get as much info as possible about diet, exercise, drugs, interactions with other meds, etc etc etc. BTW, what was your glucose level, and how long after a meal was the blood sample taken?

I'm no expert, but I believe that a positive hemoglobin screen means that there are antibodies in your blood, so you are probably fighting off an infection. Lots of different things could affect your microalbumin number and I don't think the number is particularly outrageous. It is suggestive that something may be wrong and your doctor may order more tests or monitor you more closely. Were you tested for diabetes? That would be my first thought, but that is probably because I am diabetic. Why in the world if you have high BP is it untreated? Dumb question. I didn't treat mine for years after I learned of it. It is only now that everything is going south that I am try to get healthy. I wish I had started earlier.

Hi Sue...found it. Your policy will pay a max of $2500 period. There are several types of "contents" that have limited coverage...unless you "schedule" them. Scheduling involves getting appraisals...usually within 3 years old...and adding them as a rider with a fee. With me that fee for jewelry is $16/thousand (ie; $10K Ring= $160 in additional premium per year). Jewelry is the biggy, but furs, guns, fine art, silverware, etc. are also limited. Most companies will allow you to schedule those items, but there will be a fee. The problem I think your having is confusing how your everyday items...TV's, clothes, furniture, etc...are covered and how these specialty items are covered. Your TV, if stolen would get replaced with the same make and model at todays prices...AS LONG AS YOU REPLACE THAT ITEM. They WILL NOT give you cash for the replacement value. What they do is cut you a check for the depreciated value up front, then give you the balance once you replace that item and show proof of purchase. Jewelry however, is a completely different animal. As I said it's basic coverage is very limited on all policies. It can always be expanded for a fee and I always recommend that for valuable pieces. And yes, they'd only consider $8k, not $16k. Don't let that confuse you, they said they'd CONSIDER $8k, not pay $8k. Based on what you're telling me, they're only paying $2500.

It seems like everyone's experience with this issue is different. My agent used to work for State Farm. He had to come over and take a picture to ensure that we had 100 amp service. He stated that it's not the K&T wiring that's the danger, it's that a lot of old houses have 50 amp or even lower service from the street which can lead to big problems. My agent started his own independent agency and he's switching my insurance companies. The new one needed a picture of the electrical box, too, to ensure that it was 100 amp service and that it was not overloaded. K&T wouldn't have been a problem, but probably would have increased my premium. The house was built in 1910 but all new electric. My agent stated that if the insurance companies, especially up here in the north, stopped writing policies for homes with K&T, they'd be out of business. It may be different in areas without a lot of housing, but it's very true - almost every house built before the war, and some after, have K&T and the vast majority of housing stock in this area (Cleveland) was built before that, and most electrical has not been replaced. He did state that the problem is that the service from the street isn't upgraded so people are trying to run all of today's appliances and electronics off of a 30 or 50 amp service. If you do have K&T wiring, and the insurance company isn't aware, you need to tell them. If something happens, they can deny your coverage. Even if something happens that wasn't related to wiring, if they see that you neglected to tell them that you had K&T, it could be grounds for canceling the policy. It all depends on how the policy is written, how it is applied, etc. Lots of issues there. At least up here, State Farm is excellent about covering older homes. Also, you are right on your assumption about not calling and asking "hypothetical" questions. Some agents are required by their employers to report any such questions to the insurance company. It's kind of shady, if you ask me!

One thing I discovered is you should call your *agent*, and *not* the company. If you have a good agent you might be able to save some money if there's no action on it. If you call the 800 number it's onto your record with the company where it isn't, necessarily, when through the agent, however you're still in the clear with the company since you notified the agent. A friend found this out the hard way. Called the 800 number with a question and they logged him as an accident. The agent told him to go though their office from now on. That's what they get paid to do anyway. To clarify, Minnesota has modified system of "no fault" yes, but no, it's not all "no fault" in the State. The "no fault" applies only to medical payments and eliminates the insured from being involved in working out the payments by the insurance companies. Fault is still assigned and for being on the road you generally get assigned about 25% blame no matter what happened, then the insurance companies negotiate with each other on reimbursement. For property damage, "no fault" does not apply in Minnesota. I'm surprised that medical liability isn't required nationwide. Here you are required to have liability, uninsured and underinsured, though I have a big problem with the underinsured issue. Insurance companies can be rather arbitrary on rates. They might raise it, they might not. They might raise it down the road, they might not. What am I saying... insurance keeps going up! We're still paying off losses from Katrina fer cryin out loud, which is a topic for another thread! Some watch DMV reports, some watch credit reports, and some do other things. When I had Farmer's Insurance, they pulled credit reports on me every six months! THAT bugged me and was part of the reason I left them.

Whole life insurance is appropriate for some people (it has tax advantages as an estate planning tool, for example), but term life insurance is more appropriate for most people who just need to address the question of how their family will get by without their income. Disability insurance is also a very good idea, and often overlooked. How much insurance you need depends on a lot of things, including how much your husband makes, how old you are, how close he is to retirement, whether you have adequate retirement savings, whether you have kids and how old they are, whether you could/would find work if he passed and how much you could earn, etc. Social security benefits are a factor in several ways, first for any children under 18 and for a non-working parent caring for kids under 16, and secondly as retirement benefits under his earnings record as early as age 60. You can think of your needs in 3 parts: immediate needs after a spouse's death, such as for funeral expenses and maybe paying off a mortgage, annual income needs up to "retirement" (or when you start taking Social Security on his earnings, assuming you don't remarry), and annual income needs post-SS. If you have young kids, you may want to split up the years where you are supporting your kids from the later years when they will (hopefully) be financially independent. With kids, you may also need to look to insurance to pay for college, depending on their plans and your current savings. If you can work out your annual income needs that you want insurance to cover, you can work backward to how much money you would need insurance to provide now using a net present value calculation. If that sounds like so much gibberish to you, you might consider hiring an hourly financial planner to help you with the calculations.

Thanks for your responses! The only result I got from Glucose was negative. Also the untreated BP is that way because I just found it out. I do have an appointment next week with my DR. These tests were done to update our life insurance. I don't ever remember having these tests done before. I have always had blood in my urine for some reason. I was thinking about diabetes also hopefully it's not but it's on both sides of my grandparents. Thanks again.

I used to do urinalysis as a lab tech ... the untreated BP is enough to cause all the casts, protein and blood. Treating the BP may allow the kidneys to repair themselves, or at least not damage them further.

No, it means there was hemoglobin in the urine, which is not normal.

Thanks for all your input it is much appreciated! I did go to the DR and most of my symptoms were from the high BP which he put me on medicine. But I also have blood in my urine which as lazygardens said is why the hemoglobin was positive. I go for tests (IVP and ultra-sound) in two weeks. What a way to spend my vacation! I'm really not to concerned I have had these tests twice before and the blood in the urine is unexplainable but the DR just wants to be sure. Thanks again you guys are great!

i need help i have somewhat the same problem but i am know on blood pressure medicine but it said that my hemoglobin screen was positive and that my white and red blood cells were elevated can someone tell me what that means
