Sinus Infection and Body Pain

Along with my sinuses hurting, my head, neck and shoulders hurt. I can also feel it in my back teeth. Can a sinus infection be that far reaching?

Yes.

A friend of mine has chronic sinusitis and he says lately when it starts it hurts his upper teeth first. That doesn't mean the infection is there, just all connected nerves I guess.

Are you taking any medication? I know those sinus infections can hurt!

Hi @lazy_gardens...I have attempted to collect actual proof in the form of photos; but as involving someone else isn't really practical I've relied on selfies, which themselves can vary in lighting, the angle of my head and the distance of the camera. And I'm not tech-savvy enough to be able to do the overlays you describe on a computer screen. But I agree that this would be a way to tell for sure if there's an actual difference. More recently I've been taking measurements with digital calipers along with recording atmospheric data, but either there's too much user error (i.e., inconsistency in measuring) or the weather has not yet changed significantly enough to collect any real "evidence." My mention of sinus contraction and expansion comes from a recent paper I came across, which describes differences in the size and shape of the maxillofacial sinuses and the corresponding nasal cavities in response to atmospheric conditions (http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ar.22655/full). However I wasn't sure if this was describing real-time changes taking place in a person's face or simply adaptive traits evolved in hot and humid vs. cold and dry environments. I have written the author for clarification but haven't yet heard back. Your point on bone movement being painful is well-taken, though; but I still wonder if the issue isn't related to the changing air pressure in the sinuses with changing humidity (humid air being less dense than dry air). I've also learned that blood pressure is lower in low-pressure atmospheric conditions, due to the relaxation of blood vessels, and wonder if this might also (or alternately) be a factor. I've started using a neti pot experimentally to see if different salt concentrations have any effect and may also try other recipes as well.

I'd never heard of a netti pot either, until about a year ago when a friend told me about them. Tonight, no sinus pressure/agony, so that's great! Still stuffy, but much less than before. Magothyrivergirl, my quilting class is this coming Tuesday. I thought about calling the teacher and canceling or postponing it, but I am starting to feel better and I've really been looking forward to it. I wouldn't mind going sick for my own sake, but I'd sure hate to get the teacher or other students (if there are any, it will likely one on one) sick. I also buy the pre-packaged salt packets for the netti pot made by the same manufacturer... not cheap, 8 dollars for 50 packets, but when you're sick, convenience matters more than money. I can't imagine me trying to measure 1/4th teaspoon of anything while enduring that kind of pain... I' probably miss the spoon and dump all the salt on the floor. Plus, I buy iodized salt normally, so I'd either have to buy another jug of non-iodized just for that or used kosher if that will work too (does anyone know if it will in a pinch?). Colleen, thank you for the heat pack suggestion. Last night when the pain was so intense, I filled my hot water bottle (you know the puke orange/pink rubber thing that is also used for enemas) with hot water and just pressed it against my face. After about a half hour it really did seem to help. I just wish there was something instant! I guess prevention is the thing to remember from here on out. About the Sudafed... I have gotten the kind from behind the pharmacy counter before, but it was so long ago that I forgot how well it worked or even if it did. This time I got the Sudafed PE, the pharmacy counter was closed at 2 AM :o), and I'm taking it every 4 hours like the package says. I'm keeping it in my system, and I think that's the reason I didn't have pain tonight. No pain induced mishaps today... I did put apricot exfoliating facial scrub on my Sonicare thinking it was toothpaste, but that's just because I'm absent minded :o) And I realized it before sticking it in my mouth! Thank you all for helping me get through this! Hopefully, I can resume life now!

It is possible that all of these symptoms are related, depending on the source of the post-nasal drip. Potential sources include air-borne allergies, upper respiratory infections, influenza, acute or chronic sinusitis, or, less likely, a reaction to a toxic substance in your environment. If you have had this condition for two weeks and it is progressing to the point of having headaches and dizziness, I would advise you to check in with your primary care provider. Sinusitis is particularly problematic and can become chronic if it is not treated or is treated incorrectly. Most cases of acute sinusitis are caused by failure of the normal mucus transport system or decreased sinus ventilation. The four paranasal sinuses of your face are connected by small openings called ostia. If they become obstructed or inflamed (leading to swelling and then obstruction) the sinuses do not drain properly, and the backed up secretions are an excellent media for a bacterial (or, less often, viral or fungal) infection. The pressure, pain, and inflammation in the sinuses can lead to headache and dizziness, but again this is only conjecture. I have allergies which several years ago led to sinus issues. Well contributed to sinus issues, I should say. I went through a few years of repeated sinus infections, several rounds of antibiotics (which I HATE taking), etc. I went through allergy testing again and I to this day continue to take one shot for mold (used to take 3 shots). I've become desensitized enough to other things to not have shots for those. FINALLY, my allergist suggested a sinus CT. Even after two rounds of antibiotics I had areas showing infection. I also had an extra sinus space. I went to an ENT and of course sinus surgery was suggested. I put it off until one visit with the NP at my allergy group and she asked me "do you want to live this way?" "Do you want to continue to take antibiotics and steroids?" No. I didn't. I gave in. Best decision I could have made. I apparently will never get rid of my mold allergy, but I have come a long, long way. It's made a huge difference in my overall health and feeling good! You may want to have your issues further checked out if your problems continue. Oh, and I do still take Flonase.

I have Claritin-D 12 hour(24-hour knocks me out) and Flonase (from my last doctor visit). I plan to take it easy this weekend.

cheerful1 I suffered for decades. Sinus pain can be debilitating. I tried every pill and spray out there. If I wasn't in pain, I was fuzzy. I recently discovered a 100% natural product that has completey stoped my sinus problems. I am no longer on medication. I can think clearly again. I am no longer in pain and I dont wake up with swolen eyes.

Neither one of those medications are for sinus INFECTION. You need to see your doctor for something else. Both will reduce swelling due to allergic reaction, but you need something, probably an antibiotic to get to the bacteria before it spreads into nearby areas.

Do a Goggle search for sinus infections and antifungals - there are some doctors who have had great success treating recurrent sinus infections with oral antifungals.

Ignore Lisa - she is trying to sell her stuff on all the forums.

Now that is just down right untrue lydia. What is up with you people on this forum? I have suffered from chronic sinus problems for years and years, and that is EXACTLY why I tried the product I am taking. This forum is for people who are having problems and would like suggestions, not for people to bash those that have found things that really help. I have never run into such a bunch of rude negative people in my life. I will state one last time!!! I have NOT given ANY information to ANYBODY that would send them directly to me to proffit. I WONT DO THAT! So why don't you all just get off my back. I am ONLY here because I have found R E L I E F ! I would like to share what I have found with people in pain! I have plenty of ways to market, but the Garden Web Forums is NOT one of them. And are you on the forums I am on? How the heck would I try to sell this on the Birding forums where I hang out? You should know what you are talking about before you start accusing people. This is the ONLY forum I have mentioned ANYTHING about Xango on because it is the HEALTH forum and I am TRYING to HELP. I dont see how it is going to help on a birding or wildlife forum. Those are the forums that interest me (now don't you look silley) I came in this one for one reason only, and that was to share what has helped me! I DO NOT TAKE SINUS /ALLERGEY MEDICATION ANYMORE. I DO NOT SUFFER SINUS PAIN ANYMORE. I cant share this with people who suffer? WHY? For crying out loud I am a resource coordinator for elderly and disabled people, I HELP people, thats what I do! Wanna know how many people I have helped get free medications on line in my spare time NO CHARGE! People I don't even know! Nothing in it for me but to know I HELPED someone! Go find a mean person to pick on. You are barking up the WRONG TREE!

Lisa, she said that she had an INFECTION. You do know that untreated INFECTIONS can be dangerous, don't you??? Since you state that you had sinus problems for years, I doubt that you had an infection..

And no one is forcing you to post here. If you don't like the reaction you get, I suggest that you move on to other forums. Sooner or later, someone will take you advice and their condition will get worse instead of better. I hope you are prepared to face that possibility.

UM I dont know that she has been diagnosed with a sinus INFECTION. If that is what she has of course she will have to see a DR to get rid of the infection. But the meds she is on does not indicate an infection. (you already pointed that out) Then dare I asume that you are a MD. qualified to diagnose things on the internet? The next post talks about cronic sinusitus, a real problem, been there done that. Many times led to a sinus INFECTION. I am talking about ending cronic sinus problems, NOT treating an infection. That would require a MD.
Let me ask you Agnes and Lydia, have you suffered from chronic sinusitus? Have you got any idea how it can seriously disrupt your life? Have you done any research into what I am trying to share? Do you believe that some people can come in here to share ..just because they are good people wanting to share???
It is redicolus that I should be worried that someone may take my advise! Agnes seems to post here with advise all the time! I don't know if it is good or bad advise. I guess she is prepared to face the possibilities of her advise.
I will just say this , I KNOW sinus pain, I am SO thankful to not suffer anymore!

This weekend I had a lot of lightheadedness. I'm almost sure it's an infection.

The earliest appointment I could get with my regular doctor is June 19. I hate waiting so long, but I'm not in horrendous shape as I was a couple of years ago when I ended up going to an Urgent Care facility.

I'll find out what's up and let you know.

I get sinus infections when the season changes unless I do a sinus lavage with warm water and sea salt. I'm unsure of how to get rid of an infection without antibiotics. I can tell you some symptoms that may or may not help you. When I have a sinus infection I have yucky green snot with blood. I also have aching pain in my upper, back teeth, sore throat from drainage, and lots of pressure. When it gets bad I can smell the infection. Sorry to gross you out but thats my symptoms. My neice just had a horrible sinus infection but her symptoms where different than mine. She had horrible pain and pressure without conjestion and drainage.

I have a really wicked headache today. I feel it in my head, neck and teeth. I live on Long Island, and the remnants of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Hanna is on its way here.

I was wondering if there's a connection between humidity/barometric pressure and sinus problems?
