Elements doesn't crop the way a photo program does. Instead you want to open the image you want to crop and open a new image the same resolution. Then use the Marquee Selection Tool. It's the tool that is at the top left of the tool pallet. It has a square or an elipse. With that tool make a shape around the area you want to keep. Leave it selected (marching ants). Then go to Edit, Copy. then paste it into the New image.

Do you still have the manual for the scanner? I assume this is a stand alone flat bed scanner? Might pay to remove the scanner program then re-install but check the manual to see if it is like the printers where you should not connect it to the computer until the program prompts you. Possibly a corrupt file there somewhere.

Pam, You can try going to your system partition, drive 'C:', and look in 'Program Files'. Open the 'Adobe' folder, there should be one, and see if there is a folder for 'Photoshop Elements'. If so open that and hover your pointer over the '.exe' file(s), don't click to execute the file. When you hover the pointer over the file(s) you should get a small pop-up window with the file information in it such as 'Description', 'Company', 'File version', 'Size', etc. Hope that helps you out. Doesn't Windows 7 have some kind of "run in previous version" compatibility mode??? Generally speaking, once you open the software box, you own the software. Some stores may make an exception but I wouldn't count on it. It seems that Adobe as a free trial of Photoshop Elements 10. Here is a link that might be useful: PS Elements Trial
