Learning webdesign...

Hello all,

I, much like you, am very new to webdesign and have had no proffessional training... just thought I would stop by and offer up a link to what i've found to be the single most useful resource in learning this craft:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&group=alt.html

Google has an incredibly vast amount of good information, but more importantly - it has a huge network of people that are willing to critique your site, and give you good solid advice, which I feel has helped me gain a better understanding of webdesign quite quickly.

You can check out the site i'm currently working on, it's my first site and is about 3 months old... if you have any questions please feel free to contact me via email.

Nice looking site...but as far as the coding you have quite a few errors, Also the top line should indicate the current version of HTML, as well your content is good but I'd Beef up the keywords.
Here's a couple example errors...
Error: NOSAVE is not a member of a group specified for any attribute

Error: element NOSCRIPT not allowed here; possible cause is an inline element containing a block-level element

Good Luck with your Site and Coding!

Your website looks very nice and professional, Don. My 15 year old is trying to learn guitar so I'll be back to check your site out when I have more time! Good luck.

heather, I don't know about Sue or anyone else but I found your page to be very, very difficult to read. Problems are too much photo print of blue and butterflies. List on the left hand side of the page instead of in the middle and the print was in blue. Blue print on blue background is difficult to read. Same would for green print on green background or any other combination of the same color print on the same color background. My personal preference is white background with black print, no fancy background or photos on the page, just links to photos. Also, I wish people would not use any kind of flashing photos on their pages as well. Flashing photos and flashing anything can be a health risk to many people. Those that suffer with seizure disorders can not look at a page like that because it can trigger seizures within seconds to minutes of looking at the flashing pics on a page. They can also trigger migraines as well. Fran

You've done a great job with everything! I especially like that you recognized all of the good times that were had in the original kitchen, and that beam is an absolute delight -- pulls the warmth of the original kitchen's "spirit" right in. Love your webdesign! -Ellen

The Bishops Weed is the dumbest thing I ever planted and I would kill it tomorrow if we weren't selling. Maybe I'll do it anyway just because I hate it so much. I'm thinking I'll just smother it with black plastic before we leave for a month next week. Maybe it'll be good and dead when I return. And yes, I should have mentioned that I do know the pic is fuzzy.....and also that the 'Weed' is the worst background for any plant - and it was also the worst time of day for a good shot. I've got the camera poised to go out with me daily, but I can't stand to be out there longer than ten minutes (105 heat index today and worse tomorrow). Not only that, I took this pic before the heat wave hit. Not worth taking pix anymore. And I agree....playing with color on PB is a no-no. I want the true color. My son said he thought I would find PB's functionality easier just because it IS slow....he knows me. I had ten GE's because I'm stubborn and kept trying different spots. I gave six away because I got tired of the game. Kept only this one - the last 3 are on their way to other friends....if I had enemies, they'd be the recipients. Walking back and taking more pix just a few minutes apart is a great suggestion, Ken. It's amazing how that 'perfect time' of day changes minute to minute. And right now it's between 7 and 8 pm. Thanks for all the feedback. It IS appreciated and I need the critique! Westy

Should I let 1and1 host my site I'm nervous about their bad press

Well, you've learned one lesson: Don't ever register your domain through your host. It's a pain in the behind if you want to transfer it. I always recommend to people that you use a plain old domain registrar like gkg.net or godaddy.net (I prefer gkg.net myself). You can then point the domain to wherever you eventually host the site. Lesson two would be, do your research when getting a webhost. There are lots of bad ones out there. And plenty of good ones. The problem is finding "real" reviews of hosts (a lot of the review sites have fake reviews on them). I use www.webhostingtalk.com as a resource a lot, and search there on any potential hosts that I'm considering -- you generally get the straight scoop from people posting there. Lesson three: you get what you pay for. $2.00 a month web hosting is...well, frankly, a joke. That's probably why they get generally poor reviews. To get decent service, customer support, etc., you really need to be paying somewhere in the $8.00 - $15.00 a month range for shared hosting for a basic site, IMO. As for what to do now -- personally, I would try to move away from this host. I did a search on 1and1.com on the forum I mentioned above, and they seemed to be a pretty mixed bag as far as reviews. You can definitely do better than that. There is NO reason they should fight you on letting you take your domain with you -- you just need to be very upfront, and don't take any crap from them. On the other hand, if you don't want to deal with the mess of trying to move, you can try them for a while, and see how it goes. Some people do seem to like them just fine. Maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones!

Maryann and Dale,

Thank you for the feedback. Dale, you are the first to mention those errors, so another thanks is due :-). Are you getting them on every page? I haven't yet had time to view the page in multiple browsers, only IE 6.0 (yes i know, I just haven't had a chance to download multiple browsers), is it possibly a browser compatibility issue with the SSI? I only learned SSI a couple of days ago so it is very likely I'm messing it up. Any addition feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again.

Dale...

I went to Net Mechanic today, i've got a better understanding of where the error is located now. The errors are all part of the code I copy/pasted from counted.com - my hit tracking service (perhaps it's time to learn how to use log files with IIS?). Fortunately, becuase I'm using SSI, fixing the one file will automatically update all of my pages. Anywho, I'm off to figure out it's fix.

Oh yeah... to those who don't know it's out there...you can check your webpages for errors quickly at http://www.netmechanic.com

Thanks again.
