stripping painted stairs

I want to strip the paint (not sure # of layers) and then stain/polyurethane the exposed wood. There are 2 balusters at the end of each step.
What is the preferred method?

Since you didnt mention age of the stairs first thing to do is confirm there is no lead in the paint. If it does contain lead you need to call a pro to remove it. Removing lead based paint is not something to mess around with.

If theres no lead then you can use a chemical stripper but that might still leave some residue. Since you are wanting to finish the treads sanding is required. To deal with the spindles will requirea sharp and i mean sharp scraper blade. If you are able to remove the spindels i suggest that gets done. Job will go much better if you dont have to scrape around spindels on every tread.

For re-staining, you have to go down to the wood. If you get a lot of sun exposure, then yes, that's likely causing the cracking. I would try to limit direct sunlight with some window shades or something similar. There are also some clear finishes that are more UV stable than your typical oil polyurethane, but I didn't think UV was a problem indoors. For stain, use a pigment stain such as the yellow Minwax cans.

It sounds like the larger nails were some type of not-very-competent repair. There are better ways to deal with loose treads and squeaky stairs. Do a search on YouTube: you may find some helpful ideas that apply to your situation.

I was about to say 'they' used the wrong type of nosing. And they did NOT nail/tack it into place. The adhesive is letting go because of the finish on the wood. The two didn't like each other so the adhesive is letting go. At this point the best option would be metal nosing. Tacked into place.

So The painter will be applying two coats of the poly At first he will paint the risers and the wainscoting where there is stain, then put the final coat of polyurethane. They won’t do a third so I will get a 220 grit sandpaper and do it myself in a few weeks. Of course, this weekend is a big holiday and having family in town so they will have to go barefoot or wear socks on the steps, per the painter. No shoes.
