Raynaud's

My daughter is contemplating accepting admission to Northwest University near Chicago. She has Raynaud's but, while she's lived in Texas, it was not something that fequently occurred or was very impactful on her life. Because of the weather in Chicago, should she not consider a college that otherwise has so much of what she wants in a school?

In my opinion, it would depend on how mature she is. Is she the type who has always taken good care of herself, or is she careless ? She can get by in Chicago with proper clothing of the type you would find in a sporting goods store. She needs several hats, several pairs of reqally warm mittens & gloves, good wool socks, warm boots that fit over the thick socks, etc.. If you know you can count on her to dress properly, she'll do fine. If she's the kind who will run out the door, forgetting the hat, gloves, etc, she'll definitely get frostbite.

How severe is she? Does she have any other health problems that will cause her stress? As you know, the more stressed out she is, the more it may flare up.Usally Raynaud's is more a PITA than serious- again it depends on if there are other problems.
How long was she in Texas? Was she in air-conditioned buildings(where she could not control the temp of the building, as she can at home) for long periods of time? Or was she more at home, where she could control the inside temp? Usually the air conditioning is pretty cool in bigger buildings. One place she will have to eal with air conditioning, the other will be cold outside. Chicago isn't cold all year, though.
How much stress will it be in either place? Where does SHE want to be? If she wants to be in Chicago, and she is sent to Texas, that is a stress. Which school has the best history? Which school might an employer be more impressed with? Which school will be easier for her to manage her classes? Can she take a couple classes at a time at one, so that when she is full blown into her area of study her load won't be so heavy.
She should now be at the age that it is her decision, no matter how hard you want to protect her. She should know what she can handle, what stresses her (I'm not saying YOU are a stress, but maybe she wants to get away... on her own).
In todays world, the university may make or break her career.
Let her decide. If it is the wrong decision, she can always move. We women can always change our minds...
Hope she enjoys college- it is a great time in her life!

I too have raynaud.It is so painful.My fingers turn blue nearly black.It for sure is raynaud's.They said that the blood is having trouble getting thur my veins.My toes are the same.I knew a lady that had the same thing and she had to have her fingers and toes removed.It sort of like frost bite.I never heard of the treatment you mention.How does raynaud's effect you.Do you have trouble with your fingers and toes?Do yours turn blue and black?I would love know more about Raynaud's.Someone told me that it was a type of lumpus or arthitis.Have you ever heard this?Thanks for starting this post.

I have severe Raynaud's. Feet are no problem, thanks to disposable foot warmers. I go through many boxes during cold weather. Hands are another story. I've been enjoying pretty fingernails this year because last winter was so mild. Usually the nails get damaged between the nail bed and the first joint, before they emerge. Then they grow in all creased and deformed--really ugly. I haven't had nice looking nails in many years. Of course, that's not the worst of it: The sores are. They're the equivalent of frostbite. The pain is intense, and in the worst years the sores open, inviting gangrene. Nasty! Although I make a practice of staying away from pharmaceuticals whenever possible, I'm thinking of requesting a low-dose beta blocker (maybe half the lowest normal dose) to see if that helps. Also, I started seeing an acupuncturist last week. It wa mostly for other issues, but when she felt my feet she said, "This is unacceptable!" I agree. :-)

It's just so random. It's my right index finger and it truly feels like a dead person's finger. When I touch it from bottom to top I feel absolutely nothing. All nine others fingers are pink and this one is purplish white. Right now it's normal but that could change in a minute. I've even had it in the summer if I'm searching around a frozen food case in the grocery store. >>Susan..where do you get toastie toes? Another question. What is the best kind of sock to buy. 100% wool? I usually wear heavy low cut cotton socks, but for winter, I'll need to change this. It's weird when I take a bath my toes are pure white and then when they hit the warm water they turn purplish black and then pink up. I've never had sores but it gets worse every year so that'll probably next. I was diagnosed with FM in 1990 but didn't have this till about five years ago.

Funny, I was just thinking about a post you must have made on this topic last year! I'm doing fine here too so far -- knowing how to manage it and avoiding stress! Alisande, I'm so sorry to learn of your problems! Sounds horrible. I love using MediBeads!!!!! If you don't have one (or more) you may want to try them. I have 3 versions. lol! I buy them on-line at National Allergy. You heat them in the microwave for a few minutes and they provide nice moist heat for a long time. I'll do something like heat the neck wrap and just wrap my hands in it or heat the king pad for my feet. The neck wrap is wonderful for tension in your neck too! :) Edited to add the link and I see that they have some new styles!
