Cataracts

I am new to this forum.But I need advise.I went to the eye dr for exam because I am having trouble seeing clear.It has been going on for awhile.I had a good exam for as they really checked my eyes from front and back.The dr asked for my husband to come in so he could speak to him.He asked me if I ever taken predisone.I reply yes.I have for many years due to my back,having 3 back surgeries and needing another one,my dr puts a shot in my back ever 3 months.Well than the eye dr said it has made cataracts on my eyes.I have one on each eye.He said I need to have them removed.He said my eyes are in bad shape.He asked how long had I been having problems with my eyes and I said for a long while.My question is,has anyone ever heard of this and can anyone tell me what to expect from the time I get to the hospital to I go home.The dr said I will be going into a operating room to have this done.My husband and I asked again ,you mean a operating room.He said yes.He said they don't put me to sleep.As you may can tell I am very scared.I am 42 years old.Any help would be greatly apprecaited and thanks for your time.Also what number is best when they say you can see,so and so.He told me my number and I was wandering if it is bad.Catlady

That's awful. The doctor who gave you the prednisone never mentioned the possibility of cataracts?

Both my parents had outpatient cataract surgery, and both were pleasantly surprised by how quick and relatively painless it was and by how quickly their vision returned.

I'm not sure about surgery in an operating room. Have you quizzed your doctor on everything you have questions about? Why you need to be in the hospital, how long the surgery takes, when will your sight return, potential problems, etc.

They have only recently found out that sometimes steroids can cause cataracts. I had them and I will always wonder if it was because I had to take prednisone for asthma.

The surgery is a breeze. Of course, things can go wrong even in getting a even a toe nail removed, but this is really considered very low risk surgery. It should be done in a hospital or clinic Operating room that has been specially set up for eye surgery. It takes only a few minutes. Your total time in the hospital will probably be less that 2 hours. I didn't even have to take off my clothes or shoes. You will be put into a very slight "sleep." You will need someone to drive you home and since you will be very sleepy, it's a good idea idea to have someone with you. You will need eye drops every few hours for about a week. If you can do it yourself, fine, if not, someone will have to do it for you.

As far as your eyesight afterwards, it will be as good as it was before the catatracts developed. You may not even need glasses.

You are going to be suprised at how much improvement you have.

I have to agree with you 100 percent. Colors are so much different after cataract surgery. Street lights look like street lights again, instead of pinwheels. :-)

I had mine done last month. I requested having it done without sedation anesthesia at all. He compromised with my request by having an having a line set for an IV just in case something went sideways. I didn't need it. I wanted to not have to have that possible extra day of tiredness or fogginess after sedation. I was able to drive myself back the next day for my checkup and I was back on my horse the next. I wore close fitting sunglasses to ride until I was done with the drops to avoid dust and debris but other than that it went great. Got to agree you need to be prepared for all the weirdness of lights and sensation that go on during the surgery but I focused on "how interesting'' so I wouldn't get anxious. Glad your surgery went well. The scratchiness will get better soon. Having to fit the drops into a busy schedule is a bit bothersome but no biggie. If you have floaters you will see more of them and at least for me the lights were a bit to bright and bluish for the first week or so. Now all I deal with is great vision and those pesky tiny floaters I didn't notice so much before. LOL I chose the lens that gives me distance and moderate vision. I need to see distance for trail riding and moderate for my phone, rigging and day to day fiddling with stuff. Still need readers for really close up vision or small print. But I can read my phone easily and I can count the leaves on trees at a distance. I love it. My other eye doesn't need the surgery yet but I will get the same lens for it. Never had Lasik on that one so the risk of side effects or a less desired outcome is even lower.. I was warned about possible halos, especially since I had previous Lasik done on that eye. But other than a little bit more light sensitivity it turned out great. No noticeable glare or halos other than the ones that some newer lighting types have a bit for almost everybody if they bother to notice.

Light adjustable lenses are especially good for cataract patients who have scarring from early Lasik, as was my case, or any other eye situation where it makes it harder to predict how the eye will respond to cataract surgery. The lenses are designed to be adjustable after the surgery and healing, with the application of strong ultraviolet rays. The way it works is, first surgery, then wait a few weeks as the eyes heal, then blast them with UV, then wait a couple more weeks to see how the vision is, and repeat as necessary until the vision is as good as it can get, followed by a "lock-in" procedure to keep the lenses at that strength. During this time, it's necessary to be careful not to get any environmental UV light in the eyes. This includes outdoors (even when it's cloudy) and near windows or near something that could reflect light from windows. So, I'm guessing that I will be in these hideous glasses for somewhere between two to four months. Best case scenerio, when it's over, my vision will be totally corrected for both distance and near.

"In college, my dominant eye became nearsighted while the other remained normal. The images were not "merged" as you describe because (as an example) in a large lecture hall, I couldn't read what the profs would write." Of course the images weren't merged properly because you didn't have clear vision in both eyes. Once you got your glasses with correction for your right eye, then the images from your right eye merged with the images from your normal, uncorrected, left eye. With contacts or IOLs "set" for monovision, both eyes see correctly for the distance for which they are corrected, then both of those images are merged by your brain. "I still wear glasses to this day and with different corrections (as I understand is not unusual) in each." Yes, I think it's probably more common for people to have differing corrections for their two eyes than for the two eyes to need the exact same correction. I used to work with someone who wore contacts with the same prescription for each eye, and he never had to worry about making sure he got each lens in the right chamber of the soaking solution. I've worn "hard" contacts since the early 1970s, and when RGP lenses (rigid gas permeable) lenses came out in 1979 I was switched to those, and have had RGPs ever since. My contacts have always had an almost-imperceptible dot near the edge of the right lens, so you can easily tell which is which. "One thing to consider is that if one's distance vision is only seen through one eye, then depth of field is lost." And that's exactly what the problem was that night when I was driving home with monovision contacts. And because I cannot say with absolute certainty that I will never, ever, be in a situation again when vision from only one of my eyes will be enough to serve the need/purpose at hand, I will never, ever, have my vision correction set as monovision.

Thank you both for your time.I meet with the surgery dr next thurs.For as the dr that gave me these shots over these years,nope not one time has he even mentioned a side affect.I can blame myself.I should have been more asking.But I guess now I pay for my mistakes.He did say for sure it would be done in the operating room.That is one thing that got me all scared.I am making a list to my questions for next week to ask.I even thought I was too young to have cataracts.Also my fear as I guess you can understand why,what if it don't go as planned and I get in worst shape than I am now.But I guess we must not look to what if and think positive.Thanks again both of you for your time and the information.Catlady
