Metformin

I was wondering if anyone is taking this medication and if they have any side effects from it? This is my second week and I am still so nauseated. The stomach cramps aren't letting up at all. He wants me to "grin & bear it" for 30 days before changing the prescription. To see if my body will adjust. I was just diagnosed with diabetes. Help!

Ive been on it for almost a year. I never had ANY serious side effects,esp as severe as yours. Are you taking it on a full stomache?

I was on 1000 mg a day for about a year and although I did experience some gastro problems, I guess I simply adjusted to them, but I remember the first three weeks were pretty bad. I wasn't nauseated until recently when my doctor bumped me up to first 1500 mg and now 2000 mg because my readings aren't staying down. I tend to be nauseated in the evenings and if I eat too much at a meal or I eat Mexican food (which is one of my favorites, of course!!). My problems from day one have been some cramping, diarrhea and increased frequency. This has actually worked out pretty well for me since I used to have problems with occasional constipation (LOL). If you can, I'd try to stick it out a little while longer, especially if it ends up bringing your readings down. Good luck!!

You need to make sure you are eating something every few hours. The metformin is keeping your glucose level down -- if you forget to eat, you're going to lower it even further, and if it gets too low, you'll get sluggish, confused, and even pass out if it gets too bad. We've seen diabetics with low blood sugar hallucinating like crazy people, and others get so combative that the police need to be called to subdue them so we can administer glucose. It's truly amazing actually....one minute they're babbling about the giant purple spiders on the wall and the next minute (after a tube or a shot of glucose) they're perfectly lucid and wondering why all these ambulance people are standing around them. Don't let that be you! Always pay attention to that feeling that you "need to eat now" and make sure you are always carring something sugary/starchy with you that can be quickly absorbed if you start to feel funny.

Hi everyone. I was recently diagnosed with Type II and frankly am mortified. I guess I shouldn't be because that won't help me to control it. I've been reading some of the posts here and some of it is pretty frightening. However, I'm glad you all are here, it's encouraging. I think I need a little hand-holding because although I have a lot of resource info (beforehand), I'm not sure how to manage my eating and lifestyle. I haven't seen a nutritionist yet - that's coming soon, but I'm trying to watch my eating habits. I know that I need to increase my exercising. I've learned from before. I actually think my previous excercise routine kept the diabetes from starting earlier. Now I don't feel like doing anything. I have an exercise bike and a rowing machine here at home. They don't collect dust all the time, however, I do need to increase using them. Now that I've vented, I guess I'd like to know more details on managing my sugar levels. I'm supposed to take the metfomin - once in the PM, with food. I took it once and thought I would die!! I was so sluggish and couldn't tell if I was sleepy or tired or what. Emotionally, I was a wreck - grumpy and irratable, and I felt so frustrated. I finally took a nap because I couldn't do anything else. After that, I felt better, but still had the emotional thing going on. The other thing - after I took it, even into the next day, my hands, feet and arms were so hot - like prickly heat, only worse. My skin was on fire - very red and burning. I also swelled up so much, like I was retaining more fluid. I know it was the meds because nothing else changed and it hasn't happened since I stopped taking it. I called my Dr., but haven't heard back yet. Anyone else have those symptoms? Also, what is the difference in the timing for taking it. Some people have said with meals, others before and in the AM. Not sure about that. My daughter took it for years then was told that she was misdiagnosed. She was told that it is used to keep you from getting diabetes. Some people follow all the health rules, yet are not able to shed weight like they want. The initial doctors told her that she had Policystic Ovarian Syndrome. Just because she did not have ovarian cysts doesn't mean that she doesn't have the condition. Because of the blood tests the doctor can tell if you will develop diabetes in years to come. If you fit the profile, then it is good for you to take the Metformin to help get your weight down. For these people not only do they risk additional health problems with the added weight, but also they will develop diabetes. My daughter took it for about 3 years, then another doctor took her off of it. She is in the military so gets many opinions although some doctors are not as good as others. Her latest doctor said that they know more about Metformin and Policystic Ovarian Syndrome and that she does not have that condition. He told her she just needs to exercise more. My daughter and I are 5'3" and have trouble keeping our weight down. Whenever we eat it seems like we cannot eat what others eat - especially men. My daughter is in the Navy, and must stop eating before the men do, and also must always exercise. THis is too long. I have other information if you want it. I don't think the med is bad, and if you have the condition, it is a miracle drug. Sammy

I have been on Metformin for several years there are several things that you can do to prevent the side effects. Only take it with a meal and always supplement your B vitamins especially the B-12. This will prevent most of the stomach issues. Metformin strips the body of B-12. I don't know why some doctors do not inform the patients of this and put them on a supplement from day one. Any time I hear someone say they are on Metformin and suffering the stomach issues I suggest going immediately and getting B-12 supplements preferably the liquid B-12. I take it daily, I find it at CVS and Walgreens. My doctor checks my vitamin levels every 3 months when he does my blood work. It should really be required wish it was so many would then know what is happening. My doc will also on occasion give me the B-12 shots. The liquid B-12 I take is not the under the tongue type it is in a bottle that has a little cup on top (like pepto bismol has) you take one little cup full daily. It tastes good actually. CVS Liquid B-12 1000 mcg CVS Liquid B-12 1000 mcg the one at walgreens looks pretty much the same but has the walgreens name. I think one of the most important things for anyone that is newly diagnosed with any type of diabetes is to go to a diabetes education facility and go through the classes. The doctor can write a prescription for the education and insurance will pay for it. The knowledge you get is so valuable and you get to keep all the notebooks and literature for reference. Most will also call and follow up with you for some time after the education to make sure you are doing ok and answer any questions plus you can also call them should you need to. Extremely valuable!

Janet, I am taking 2000 mg a day 2 tablets morning and night. I wonder if I should take one pill 4xs a day? Maybe that wouldn't be so hard on my system. I'm so nauseated in the mornings, worst than morning sickness....at least what I can remember. My "baby" is 30! LOL

whoa - I have been wondering why my Dr. is making me gut it out with just diet and exercise. I have been asking people about the downside of the medicines, but never got any reply.

Hi Karen,

I am a diabetic and have been on Metformin for 10 years now. I could tolerate only one pill of the regular Metformin (1)(500mg), until they came out with Metformin Extended Release and then I was able to take one extra 500mg. (2) 500mg a day. I don't remember ever having the nausea but, I certainly had the diarrhea.
I just recently changed to a new diabetes doctor. He has started me on a new medicine called Fortamet. This is Metformin but reformulated in that it is suppose to release the medicine even slower so that you won't get the diarrhea or the other reactions. At least that is what he told me. He said too many people were like me not being able to tolerate the Metformin or Glucophage. I am starting this newest drug tomorrow. It is a smaller white pill and is coated and looks like it will be pretty easy to swallow. I am willing to try this and am hoping that it will work well for me.
Fortamet comes in 500mgs and 1000mgs.

This may be an option for you to consider, ask your doctor about this med if you continue to have problems.

These are the drugs that are available in that class. 1. Glucophage/Glucophage extended release 2. (Generic) Metformin/Metformin Extended Release, now the Fortamet a slower release of the drug Metformin.

There is a lot of information out on the internet about diabetes and these medications. If you can find yourself a diabetes educator, they can help you a lot in giving you information and about the newest drugs available. My diabetes educator happens to be a pharmacist and he has been a big help to me when I have questions.

I know that feeling of first being diagnosed with diabetes, but I will tell you that if you do your homework, follow your diet, exercise and above all don't give up you will do fine. Make sure you have a doctor that listens to you, keeps up with the latest information and meds and who really cares about you and your condition, that's so important.

I don't mean to sound like I'm second guessing your doctor, but 2000 mg seems like a pretty hefty dose to start you out with. But, I'm no doctor and don't know your medical history so I probably don't have any right to comment. Just a thought, but if you're sick in the morning and that's when most people are at their lowest for the day, maybe you're too low?? Do you have a monitor and take your own readings? Are you sick before you eat, after or both before and after? I've attached a link that may give you some additional information. Hang in there!!

I started on Metformin in November 2005. I, too, am on 2000 mg but my doctor started me out on 500 mg and then increased the dosage weekly until I reached 2000 mg. I was still having some problems, so I now take 1000 mg in the morning and 1000 mg at night. Check with your doctors and see if you can gradually build up to your 2000 mg. dosage.
