Hardwoods--how do they undo a messy mistake with the stain?

Our new house just had the floors stained and first 2 coats of finish applied (#1 common white oak throughout the downstairs). I saw them for the first time yesterday. ALL around the kitchen island and near several door jambs and at the base of the stairs in the foyer, the stain didn't get wiped off very well, and it's unsightly. Being the weekend, I've only corresponded with the builder via email, but he did say the floors would be corrected.

What I'd like to know before I let him tell me what they're going to do, is what is the proper way to remedy this? Can they "spot treat" or should the entire floor be re-done so that it all matches?

Thanks!
