the DA literature says it grows to 3-4 feet - don't believe it. In my climate it makes a very nice 8 foot climber I believe I've seen Graham Thomas make a very small 5-6 feet climber even up here north of Boston (& then die back to almost nothing during a particularly harsh winter). milieu serene, are you familiar with the Climbing Tea (vs. "Hybrid Tea") & Noisette roses? They are older roses that often, but not always, have a more relaxed flower form, yet they also often have the advantage of being bred from wild roses that naturally grow in a climate not unlike yours. In fact, the first Noisette rose came from a South Carolina plantation, back in the early 19th Century (or late 18th). They are all dependable rebloomers, even in hot summers, and it's not unusual for them to suffer little from diseases when grown in warm/hot, humid climates (the advantage of being bred from wild roses of the semi-tropics). If you aren't familiar with them, I encourage you to also take this question of yours over to the Antique Rose Forum. There you're bound to get good answers from other rosarians in the Southeast who can give you good recommendations about yellow Tea & Noisette roses that will handle your climate well. (Oh, and yes, a good number of the Noisette & Tea roses are varying shades of yellow, or yellow with pink &/or orange.)

Thank you for all of your answers and advice. Wgafaw, I believe the mat is made from recycled tires. It does let moisture through, sorry about not being clear on that. I would have pruned it back now, but since it might bud, I will wait untill early next year. I do trim the bush back. It tends to get real long (leggy). I will consider moving the bush. It does seem to be doing well there, but I will look for another spot. I am concerned now that the hole I planted the rose in might be in a bowl, also. This clay just does not drain here, but there was a lot of good dirt spread on top years ago for the lawn. I will dig a hole along side the bush to see just how much soil there really is. I want to thank all of you for your assistance. That last bloom that was on the plant, I gave to my wife. Ofcourse she loved it. It still is pretty. I put it in a vase and added one aspirin, I've heard that helps preserve cuttings. I'm semi retired and I plan on doing more gardening, now. I made another post on the fig forum. That, too, is an heirloom. I haven't gotten any answers yet, so I do appreciate all the responses, here. I have some Ivy, my brother gave me. I worried about it spreading, so I'm going to cut the bottom out of a bucket and plant the ivy that way. I haven't found a location yet. I live on a .6 acre lot which has a six foot brick wall on two sides of the lot, so there might be a good spot there. There are lots of other plants here and they have never really been cared for. I think you leave it until too late. When you dig the bush up, just make sure you have a huge plastic bag to put it in immediately. Then keep this bag in the coolest spot away from the Sun. The bag helps to keep the moisture in so the roots won't dry out. Taking cutting is OK. Make sure you take fairly mature canes and seal into aplastic bag and keep in your fridge just like keeping veggies. Now, the next thing you might like to venture is to graft (bud) it on another live host to make sure you have a copy. You can buy a potted rose of easy type like Iceberg or something that grow very easily. Take a bud off this rose and graft on the potted rose. This buy you time to do more later when you settle at the new place.
