Gift cards tend to get shoved in drawers or the side zipper on a wallet, and forgotten about or lost. If there are a bunch of them they are hard to remember to keep track of and using one up to the exact dollar amount usually requires spending MORE money to make a purchase or the last few dollars get wasted by never being used. I can't tell you how many gift cards to Best Buy or Victoria Secret I have that have just a few dollars left on them and I'll have to blow another $20 or so to get those last remaining dollars out of them. I would just give him ONE gift card. Make it for something he uses all the time, like gas for the auto. You can purchase a gasoline gift card and give it to him and some of them can be recharged. You can keep adding money as it gets low. Where I live there is a program that involves a wand that hangs from the keychain that you wave at the pump and it records the sale. The bill can be sent to your home. He may think this new gadget is 'cool' and use it just because it is interesting. Possibly it won't seem like charity to him. Since he is still active, and gets out of the house frequently for his job and hobbies, this will get used a lot. You can also buy an American Express gift card that can be used in ANY store that takes AMEX. This gives him more options to get things he really needs that you may not have thought of. I think this is a better option than a bunch of different cards to different stores. He can even use it at restaurants. I don't know if you can change the billing address on utilities but where I live you CAN gift someone extra landline phone services for their line and have it billed to your account. I did this for my parents. I bought them a caller ID box that shows the numbers calling, in big numerals. I gave it to them wrapped for xmas. On the sly, I had had the phone company activate the service starting the day before. They plugged it in and it "worked". They had no idea I was paying the $6.50/mo for the service. They thought the box worked all by itself. Now they don't have to struggle to get to the phone and have it stop ringing before they get to it and then wonder 'who was calling'. And yes, I did try buying them a cordless phone but neither of them can get out of the mindset that a phone must be 'hung up' and not "left laying around". I would call the utility company to see about changing the billing address. I know that bills can be sent to another address. How easy this would be to do would depend on who you talk to at the phone company. They may put you through hoops, or they may just rubber stamp the request.

I suppose the battle is really working up the courage to say enough is enough. I struggle because I hate hurting people or feeling like I am letting them down but in the same regard I suppose by me doing things for my partner, he will never do anything to help himself or his son. Colleenoz - thank you for your kind words. I never thought about it like the way you put it. Seeing that he could turn like that if something bad happened to me is some what alarming. Because when I think of the answer to something happening to me and would he be there, I can't answer that. And if I can't answer that, then there is a real big problem. LaVerne - Thank you for your comment. Do I want to change? Yes i really do, so I guess I know what I have to do. Reading Lady - Sadly this situation is real, it would be nice if I was making it up but unfortunately I am not. I know everyone on his mother's side has bi-polar and basically have lived their lives in and out of either jails or foster homes. Sometimes I think the cycle can be broken but in the same regards, it's not my responsibility to have hero complex (i.e. trying to save everyone). Let me just say this, I know that none of you know me from a bar of soap, which in turn makes you more truthful. I appreciate your honesty and i thank you for your wisdom. I know everyone goes through hard stages in life, but you are right. If I am not happy with the situation, then only I can change it. I think it's time for me to worry about myself and get back what I want. If I succeed (and I truly hope I do) than please know every little word by each of you contributed to giving me strength. You all really have no idea how much you have put my mind, heart and bank balance at rest.

Sueb20, yes white walls, beams, cabinets and counters, which does got with stained trim/doors/windows which are still there and the travertine flooring - both are warm tones. I even saw a touch of medium gray on the coffee station.... AND they painted the travertine FP surround. The next week, DH wanted to get out and go for a drive, so we rode past the nearby house where we lived for 20+ raising our children. What was a lovely landscaped corner lot has been completely destroyed. I knew they were not "yard people" but had a landscape company. Clearly, cutting down hundreds of azaleas, wild hydrangeas and trees were easier than keeping it up. Two large natural areas now have weeds and/or being invaded with grass. In addition, they painted the top part of the house a dark grey. It looks ridiculous. Obviously, I am not over either of these discoveries. LOL Sorry to hijack your thread.
