I was okay until...

I had gotten through the last two days all right. Then today, I found a receipt dated January 22,2010.

I know from the store name that late DH had gone to his doctor a few towns over to get treatment for his persistent cough.

He was diagnosed with lung cancer on Feb 4 and passed away two weeks ago today.

I feel like he just died.

You must still be numb from the loss of your dear husband, so fast. It just doesn't seem right, does it?

You'll have many reminders of him and the things he did over the years and months ahead. You'll have your ups and downs as well. I wish I could say some words which would offer you great comfort. I'm so sorry for this terrible loss. Take care of yourself.

I am so sorry for the loss of you DH and the pain you are going through. I lost my DH 3 1/2 years ago, he was ill with cancer for 18 months, it was awful. How long were you married? Do you have children? For us it was 37 years and 2 daughters.
Your pain will ease over time but your heartbreak is forever. As Susan said, you will have you ups and downs and he will always be by your side, you will know. I hope you have family and friends to give you comfort.
One thing, and this is importatnt, from me and Susan TAKE CARE OF YOUSELF your DH wants you to.

I'd plant them sometime in the next six months. People have kept them in car trunks for a year and still had some rhizomes survive. Bearded iris rhizomes are not quite like any other plant in what they like and what they dislike. If you try to treat them like a normal perennial, you will probably kill them with kindness. They are adapted to a summer dry climate. That is when they are dormant, and when they want very little water. That is going to be one of the worst problems you will have with growing them - keeping them dry enough during the summer.

Yes, you definitely need to fill from the bottom up. The moment they are done plastering, the hose should go in. And, as the previous poster has stated, the plaster crew should do this for you - they should be very used to it. The end of the hose should be wrapped in a white towel or white socks -- something that will help to diffuse the water, as well as protect the plaster from dings caused by a metal end. One of the most important things about filling a plastered pool is that once you start the fill process, you should NOT stop the water flow until the pool water has reached the appropriate level (which is halfway up the opening to the skimmer). If you stop the water flow you will end up with what will look like a bathtub ring around the interior perimeter of your pool, and you will never be able to get rid of it. If you get to the point that you are concerned that the water will reach the fill level while you are asleep or gone from the house, you can turn the waterflow down, just do not turn it off. Start out with one hose only. This should be gently placed in the deep end. Do not allow the hose to touch the sides of the pool -- that is, don't let the hose rest against the plaster. Then, when the water level reaches about 3' depth, you can add a second hose, also to the deep end, also making sure that the end is covered and that the hose doesn't touch the plaster. If you have a spa, do not allow the water from the spa to overflow into the pool until the pool is finished filling. Any water that would flow down the plaster would, again, leave permanent marks.

This is an old thread. Not terribly old, but old enough so that I'd forgotten about falling on the porch. :-) Gretchen, thanks for your concern, but the younger person is my son, who loaded up the truck for me and has his own firewood (and family) to take care of. I don't do very well with exercise, but I've found I can commit to tasks involving firewood and the heating of my home. It's not always easy, and I have to take frequent breaks and be careful not to overdo, but the result accomplishes something important to me and gives me needed exercise. So I'll keep doing it as long as I can. Not this year, though. As I mentioned in a previous thread, we don't have enough seasoned firewood to burn, so I've been burning heating oil instead. My woodstove is cold. :-(

25 years, no children. Family is about 45 minutes away.

One casual acquaintance has really come through for me in a way, though. She made a point to keep emailing me every few days after the news. Nothing long, sometimes just saying she was thinking of us and praying for us, Or me. She just emailed me yesterday, in fact. When DH died, I called her. She asked if I wanted her to call people. I said, oh yes, call our mutual friends. What I meant was our ten or so mutual facebook friends who all went to college together.

She emailed everyone in her address book who had ever done a theater production with us. Since I work on costumes, therefor not there for many rehearsals, I suspect a good number of them scratched their heads wondering, "Eva Who?"

I am glad that you had your friend to make calls for you and maybe a few of them didn't remember you but those who did I'm sure said a little prayer. It is very hard to be without the love of your life but we have to be strong. It gets a little easier with time.
