re- painting white diningroom set

i recently bought a beautiful white wood diningroom set (second hand)I was wondering if anyone could help me with ideas on re-painting it.It has a few marks and has yellowed abit.Should i use an oil based paint?Is there a product out there that i can use after its painted to protect it,something non- yellowing.(something to apply especially on tabletop)Help please!!!!!!!!!!

You can use either oil or latex paint as your color coat, though oil goes on thinner and preserves the turnings detail (if any) better than latex.

Sand it first, you need to get a good 'bite' for the new paint. Don't apply the paint too heavy.

You'll want a coat or two of polyurethane on the top (Minwax is good), applied sparingly with a foam brush. DO NOT apply heavy like you are coating paint. Use a 3M scrub pad to knock down the nits in the poly. Final coat use a clear paste poly varnish (such as Bartley's) applied very, very dry with a rag.

Use the Clear Paste Varnish on the base as well, again applied with a rag and very dry.

Thats should do you good for the next 10 to 15 years.

You might consider painting the chairs and the base of the table and leave the table top in the wood tone. You'd keep a more elegant line that way. Or if you kind of want to see how it would feel painted, go ahead and do covers on the chairs now in an ivory tone fabric and see how they look. Sure it's not the exact same, but the feel of the lighter tones would give you an idea how it will look in the end. LOL I have to say, I knew you were talking about chippendale style :) If anyone painted a real chippendale the gods of chip and dale would not smile down on them, nor their pocketbook.

Jan Moyer, as I said previously in my comment, we r painting the whole house so that diningroom is going to be a completely different color, a lighter color and I also mentioned that the orb light is coming down, i also mentioned at the beginning that the cabinet it a sentimental piece from my husbands family so it won’t be moving anywhere, the blinds are staying so please respond and work with what will be there, thanks.

Sounds like a fireplace re-do might be a longer-term fix. In the meantime, I'd paint the mantle a dark brown, a similar colour to your end tables. It's not trim and shouldn't be white. It pops out too much in the white colour. Another idea that doesn't involve any ripping-out is to go right over the existing mantle using a mantle slipcover in wood. Went to Rona's today, they recommended i buy melamine paint(white)then apply crytalex interior varnish for furniture and woodwork for top coat.What do you think?

You double posted your question. My response is below.

I respect dcollie's posts, but I couldn't disagree with him more on this one, except for the light sanding part. I would use a high-quality oil-based enamel and forget everything else.
