What does "VID" mean - after the name of a rose?
Comments (19)Additional information about BCRV with pictures. "A survey of several isolates collected from blackberry and rose across the United States revealed minimal diversity between isolates, although the New World population of the virus is very different from the only European isolate sequenced (87). The virus is widespread in the eastern part of the United States, especially among wild roses where the vast majority of the samples tested were infected with the virus. Given that there are several reports of thrips and bees transmitting ilarviruses as a function of moving pollen from infected to healthy plants (11,105), the wild rose population may be a significant reservoir of the virus. As seed is another means of transmission of ilarviruses, several hundred seeds from rose, blackberry, and herbaceous plants were tested, and the virus was found to be transmitted at high rates (87). The virus was found to be the second most widespread virus in BYVD-affected plants and has been identified in Arkansas, Florida, North and South Carolina, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Oregon (I. E. Tzanetakis, S.W. Scott, B. Poudel, unpublished). Title: "Viruses and Virus Diseases of Rubus" Authors: "Robert R. Comments (10)any hosta can "sport" - but JOTN seems particularly prone to it. Even the one on the cover of the AHS Hosta Journal an issue or three ago had some uneveness. Don't blame this on tissue culturing... once it is cultured, it is just another hosta division... Kevin Walek chose this sport from his own Dee's Golden Jewel BECAUSE it had uneven margins and streakiness. Some streaked plants are very stable... Kisuji, Swirls, for example, stay streaky for years without care. Others will try to stablize to a solid color or an edge or center varieagation. Sea Prize tends to solid green... Savannah Supreme tends toward a light margin (Savannah), Galaxy will be tend toward all dark green. The only way to keep streakers unstable and streaky when they want to stabilize is to divide them and grow the streaky divisions separately. This is especially important because the stabilized forms tend to be stronger and to eventually take over the whole plant. Ken's experience with JOTN is that it will keep going to all yellow - basically back to its parent. Mine this year is about halfway there... I'll be chopping it up next year......See MoreWhat does it mean to be a "Pro" on here?
Comments (19)I also noticed that recently some "pros" seem to take over some posts with snide remarks and what I can only assume are inside jokes. Not really on this board I don't think, but on the remodeling and building boards. It makes me hesitant to post a question now or ask for advice on those boards, and I feel sympathy for other posters who are put down and/or have their posts hijacked. One of my recent posts went that way so I just abandoned it. I would have deleted it if I could. I've been a member of Gardenweb for a long time (maybe over 15 years?) and never noticed it so much before, even though I used to spend more time on the boards. I also don't usually complain about it but just started flagging some comments that were pretty bad....See MoreBuilding new: what does "WH ILO UM" abbreviation for Master Sink mean?
Comments (17)Great (and funny) responses everyone! I love a good mystery, but not with so much riding on the result! I can ask my salesperson, but trying not to randomize here since there will be PLENTY of questions /issues as we get further in the process. Right now I'm also hoping that my front doors described as "Crystalline Sidelite 8' S814SL Full Lite" doesn't mean I have clear glass with no privacy! (This home came with pre-selected upgrades, hence my ignorance on the finer details)....See Morebobismyuncle
