Click products & water

Among other products, we have been considering cork or linoleum for a kitchen. We had been looking at glue-down tiles, but both products also can be found in click tiles. We got this message from a KD:

"Apparently, if you install a click-on marmoleum and you have a water leakage it is one of a few applications that you can pull it out, let it dry and vent and apply it back on..."

Two questions:

(1) Because of the tongue-and-groove interconnectedness, wouldn't you have to remove a few good rows to get the offending tiles out if they are not on the edge of the floor?

(2) Cork has to be sealed. But in the installation and imaintenance instructions, Forbo doesn't mention a surface seal after Marmoleum tile installation. Isn't this advisable? (I can imagine dirty seams and liquids running into the seams.)

Have you looked at it in person? When I did, even knowing where it was I couldn't find/feel the seam with my fingernails. They're VERY tight. We used Wilsonart Estate Plus click together laminate in our last house. My dh is absolutely fanatical about protection from water damage and he was convinced that that product didn't need to be glued, that the lock created enough waterproof overlap that water would never be a problem. (He installed it, so knew how well it locked..It's not just butted up, so that liquids could go straight in...it'd have to go down, across, up, down and around some more...) We had it in our kitchen, entry, and dining room and it was trouble free. We are pretty convinced the Marmoleum Click would be as good...Now if they only had some browns...(I'm not thrilled with the limited color choices)

All that said, I don't think it would be a quick and easy task to unlock some to dry them out... They really lock! I haven't been able to get two apart that were loose and in my hands, much less down on a floor and locked to several rows.

I hope a real flooring expert weighs in for you. But, in the meanwhile, I hope this is helpful.

Wilsonart is very good. But to maintain your warranty it must also be glued in Kitchens or any other so called wet areas.

Hey Al, I was thinking the hose/spout would be on the bottom of the spout (kind of like a rain barrel) but I don't need all the rain barrel funtionality on the top. Spout on bottom = gravity, no? (Maybe not enough?) I could SWEAR I have seen people watering plants in office buildings with something like this... but maybe it was their own jerry rigged contraption. LOL Any other ideas? I'd like to find a way to water my plants with the water I'm saving from warming up my showers but the 10 gallon paint cans are getting cumbersone to lift and pour into watering ans. Thanks, kristi

Water or Oil Based Products for Mahogany Flooring?

I agonized over what type of floors to get--prefinished vs unfinished; then red oak vs white oak vs amendoim vs santos mahagany; then whether to stain or leave natural; then whether to use oil vs water based poly. Nothing is ever easy! I am very happy with my end result. I am happy with the duraseal stain, although I can't say I have anything to compare it to. I like the color of the floors and white oak takes stain well, so I have no complaints about the floors being blotchy or anything like that. I am not sure why the finishers use the oil based duraseal vs a water based stain. I like the look of oil based poly better than water based where no stain is used. There is a very obvious difference between the oil based and water based when there is no stain. But, the finisher can make the water based finish look similar to an oil based finish by using the amberizer or a sealer. Since we opted to use stain, I think the water based looks good--although I have not compared stained floors with oil based vs stained floors with water based. However, I will say that my semi gloss water based does not look as shiny as my sister's semi gloss oil based. I like the shiny look and think we could have gone even shinier. However, I am fine with what we have as I know the shinier you go, the more you can see scratches, ect. Do you even need a stain? Is it standard to stain the santos mahagany? Good luck!

I agree with mysteryclock. I've used Borax and Washing Soda for years with my hard water. Just recently discovered STPP (thanks to the people on this list!) and am getting really great results with it. Shipping from Chemistry Store was kind of expensive (it nearly doubled the cost of a bucket of STPP) but since I only use 1 tablespoon at a time, even with shipping it only costs me around 13Â¢ per load to use. It's turned out to be much cheaper and way more effective than a lot of other brand-name laundry additives that you can buy at the grocery store.

CPVC pipes making clicking noise in attic after hot water used

The coefficient of expansion is different for each size of pipe, but for illustration let us consider 3/4" CPVC. For 3/4" CPVC the expansion is 1" per 100' of pipe for every 1degF of temperature change. Assuming the pipe begins at an ambient temp of 70 degress when you start your shower and the hot water is set for the code max of 125 degF the temperature differential in the pipe would be 125-70 = 55degF. The thermal expansion would then be 55" per 100ft of pipe. We rarely see a run of pipe longer than 50' in a residential system, but even at 50ft the thermal expansion would be 27.5". The CPVC installation handbook suggests a 18" expansion loop at every 30' on a straight run and the loop should be located near the center of the run. To make the expansion loop the pipe is cut and a 90deg elbow is installed. The line is then stubbed out 18" and a 90deg elbow is installed. A short 4 to 6" length of tubing to another 90deg elbow turning back towards the original pipe and then connect the loop to the original pipe with another 90deg elbow. On the ends where the pipe drops down through holes the pipe should be run about 18" to one side of the hole with an 18" offset from the pipe to the hole. IN this manner as the pipe expands the 18" horizontal offsets can flex slightly to absorb the expansion. Insulating the pipe will not prevent the expansion because the temperature differential results from the temp of the liquid in the pipe, however if the pipe is first insulated, then pipe hangers large enough to fit the exterior of the pipe insulation are installed, the pipe is free to move slightly within the insulation. If you have your water lines run through the attic space you definitely want the cold water lines insulated, otherwise as the pipe cools from the cold water moisture will condensate on the pipe and drip down on your ceiling causing water damage the same as a leak.

As a previous post stated, the Click tiles come together very tightly. They are prefinished; no sealer is required after installation. If spills are mopped up quickly, water is not a problem. In general, linoleum flooring is not recommended in "wet" areas. But I have lino and/or click in a kitchen, bathroom, craft room and laundry room. Spills, splashes and drips happen, but there's been no damage at all. That being said, Yes, you would have to take apart the floor starting at the wall in order to remove a damaged tile. It would be doable, but I'd expect some casualties. The tiles lock together very tightly, and the backer board is a fiberboard product that can break if it gets too much abuse. I'd definitely want to have some extra tiles on hand.
