RC Furniture - Can anyone speak to quality?

I'm looking for a sofa made in the U.S., of good quality, and in the $1500 range (or more if I must). I've enjoyed reading here about several brands but am now considering a sofa ("Nathan") made by RC Furniture in L.A. Does anyone know about the quality of RC products? Or another brand available on the west coast? Thank you!

In this area of the country manufacturing costs are higher than most other regions, so manufacturers that compete in this price point as RC Furniture does, and thus these manufactures are unable put in the same quality materials and standards as manufacturers from the east. That said, you don't have the extra shipping costs thats added to the price from furniture produced in the lower costs regions. But you still need to do your homework to know what your buying. In purchasing furniture and more so the upholstered products, you shouldn't shop for brand name first. First is to find the style, cover and comfort you like and the fabric/leather durability and content that matches to your lifestyle. Then focus only the sofas that meet these requirements, then search brand name or retailers that offer the best build frames that you can get in your price range.
My recommendation is to search in this forum just the term "upholstery" or "sofa", and not search by any brand name, the results should give you a much perspective on how to shop for sofas.
Also google "upholstery buying guides" or similar words in the search term.
CR did a article back in January 2005 on buying sofas.

Thanks, rmanbike. I will try some of your suggestions. I have found style and comfort but can't see the internal construction. American Leather is the other brand I am looking at that appears to be very similar and has a similar price. It looks like I will be spending more like $2000.

FWIW I probably missed the chance to find these at a farm, but I was up in Lancaster Co. and saw a jar of black raspberry jam at a farmer's market. I figured I'd try it. Indeed one can discern the similarity to the artificial flavor known as blue raspberry. There's definitely a quality not shared with raspberries or blackberries. So that part of the mystery is solved at least. I wonder why I never encountered this flavor before. Do the various hybrid berries like the Marionberries just taste like combinations of the 3 main types (raspberries, black berries, and black raspberries) or do any have a distinctive, 4th note?

Does Vanguard Furniture make a quality sectional

I've had Vanguard sectionals and couches for years and absolutely love the quality and comfort. I've also had a King Hickory sectional with attached pillows and they absolutely did tear over time. The cushions did not hold up more than 5 years -- unless you like sag. I've also had Drexel Heritage couches that looked saggy after time as well. Never had that issue with Vanguard -- I just bought an American Bungalow down sectional with loose pillows and absolutely love it. Two people (and my husband is 6'3") can completely stretch out on it. The name of the craftspeople who upholstered it, built it and inspected it are on a tag that is affixed to the frame -- 3 or four names. That's in my living room. I recently moved a large Vanguard sofa with two loose top cushions and two seat cushions from my living room into my family room to make room for the new sectional. I've had this sofa for 10 years and it looks and feels brand new. Totally love.

" I dunno if the gains are minimized due to the different architecture..." It depends on the ability of your pan to capture the heat. A capped burner has more flare when you turn the burner up to high. If you are using a 14" pan it is a good thing. If you have a smaller pan you may not be able to turn the heat up all the way. For some it balances out because they use the highest heat on the biggest pans. Other cooks want to keep the high heat in a smaller area for something like wok cooking or if they have smaller pans. If the heat goes around the pan, your BTUs are being lost. " Early on in my experience with my new BS range I realized that I wanted (needed) more BTU's for my style of cooking. " It is key to have an understanding of your own needs in the kitchen. "Anyone who is saying the 22k isn't worth the $$$ for the upgrade hasn't used both burners side by side. " While I would agree that there is a big difference in output between the two BS uncapped burners, I would disagree with this. I know many passionate cooks, that are perfectly happy with 15K or much less. I personally cook currently on commercial burners and in that setting, the beasts are useful but at home I just don't even turn my 15K burners up all the way all that often. I also know two chefs. One just has a regular all gas low BTU range at home and the other has a commercial range in his kitchen. We don't all think the same.

Look at Sherrill, Hickory Chair, Taylor King, Key City, Hancock & Moore, Bradington Young. All these are made in the US. The Envisions line of Bradington Young I believe is imported along with the Seven Seas sold by Hooker for Bradington Young.

Try Burton James. Made in California. It's a wonderful product, better made than RC and they'll make any custom change you want. Very comfortable and a good selection of fabrics.
