5' vs 3' pre finished Jatoba planks
Comments (3)Personally, I prefer 3" in a smaller room. I'm planning to have wood flooring stalled in two small rooms (total 380 sq.ft.)and will definitely go with 3". But the selection seems to be limited for prefinished, engineered in this width....See Morerandom 3 and 5 inch planks, will it look odd?
Comments (2)I used 3"-7" random width and length (1'-8') site finished. We like it (see link). It gives a "sheet of wood" look. This is because your eye do not recognize a pattern. Because we used #1 common and rift and quartered (uniform linear grain), you do notice the natural irregularities in the wood (mostly mineral streaks, ray fleck, some knots), and this is also what we wanted. The tung oil based finish in satin also highlights the wood and not the finish. We also have 3" engineered downstairs with full beveled sides and ends. Some people do not like the full beveled for cleaning or refinishing reasons, but the beveled ends do break up the repeating nature of the uniform 3" plank. This floor is pre-finsihed with a thick and glossy (plasticky) finish. So I would say that a mix of two widths, done properly, will break up the uniform pattern of having a single width floor. It all depends on the look you are after. Here is a link that might be useful: Waterlox on Oak...See MoreWood floors for small spaces... what the best color and plank size?
Comments (3)I always think that a mid-tone natural wood colour is the best option for staying power. Right now I like plank width of 4-6". That being said, a lot depends on the style of the house. In a 1950's era building 3" wide oak would be appropriate. In a building from the 1800s much wider, silvery grey oak would be amazing. We had a room in our previous home that was 15x25' and the floor was natural doug fir, 8" wide boards that spanned the entire width of the room, so every board was 15' long. It looked fantastic and was the first thing new visitors commented on....See MoreNeed help on wood floor plank width please!
Comments (29)Thanks for the additional photos. I think the stain on the current floor, or slightly lighter than the one with the tag are good choices. (Make sure they're installed the long direction as with the current floor to add length to the room.) If you're finding the room is too dark, then repaint the walls a much, much lighter, shade that works well with the current wood cabinets. The dark gray walls, plus all the dark furniture, is weighing down the room. Your cabinets look fine. Look how light and bright this kitchen looks with light gold flooring and pale gray walls....See Moreicenet
