Interesting, but I'm still a believer in it's not so much what you earn but how much you keep. Beyond anecdotes, we don't get much sense of how those not actually drawing a salary are doing. The retired, the trust-fund babies, the whatevers...

What defines "rich" or "wealth" when it's tied to acquired, accumulated assets or anything other than being defined by a paycheck every two weeks?

Intellectually I know it's tied to lifestyle, the cost of living where one happns to be, one's own perceptions, etc., but there's more to being rich or wealthy than intellect - somewhere out there, there must be a dollar amount that could be generally accepted.

I find the way they present the statistics confusing. Take my area as an example. They give an *average* of the top 20% in DC as $256K. I'm sure that average has a wide standard error. What is the the threshold to be in the top 20%? It must start below $200K if the average "rich" couple with no kids makes $202K.

try species tulips- there's greggiis, which are great for their foliage alone, the little ones that look like crocus- those multiply really well(can't recall the species name), & turkis something has done well for me, too. crocus have always done well for me- there again, i tend to like the smaller species. chiondoxia, pushkinia & squill have done well for me too. de caen anemones come back for me for a few yrs in a row- but man, what bang for the buck! i happily replant some each yr- they make the best cut flowers. soak them before you plant them & they'll do better. ixias do well. the fragrant glads come back each yr, and in fact, regular glads will, too, for the most part. had no problems with daffodils whatsoever. i especially like the little ones. jetfire multiplies really well here. for fall bloom, consider fall blooming crocus and lycoris species. alliums do really well. one thing i've never had much luck with is fritillarias, much to my chagrin. never tried the crown ones, but the meleagris & tall plum ones never did well for me. i've tucked so many bulbs into the beds by my house through the yrs it's a jungle come about jan/feb. i see that bare soil in the fall and forget how many ae already asleep in there! i have seen ranunculus at lowe's & h/d- but i haven't been by this yr. their bulb selecton gets better each yr. i picked up some really unusual ones there last yr. if you can't find them locally you could always do mail order with one of the good companies- there's lots out there. with ranunculas being in pots, you could probably get going on them a little later than other things. fyi, most winter bulbs need to be planted @ thanksgiving around here. you have to wait til the soil cools down. buy them now to get what you want(or wait til they're picked over & cheap) and store them in the fridge w/o fruit. i've planted as late as january with clearance bulbs and had some bloom. lowe's usually sells big bags of like 100 mixed daffs for a low price, which when it's on sale is a great deal. lotsa color for little moolah & a pretty good staggered bloom. they are the big kinds, though.

Well I'm in debt and not ashamed to admit it. I'm not proud, but not ashamed. It's due to a long divorce and I'd rather be where I am now than where I was then! I know I will get things cleaned up eventually. And if you look at the whole picture (my retirement account, my emergency fund, some other things I was left with) I'm really not that far in the hole and most of my debt is at a low interest. I paid for my college education, fortunately at a time when there were more grants and education was not that expensive. My student loans were only about $15K for a four-year degree that took more than four years since I starting working full-time before I finished. They were paid off before I was 30. I've been on my own since my junior year of college (went home the first two summers during college and that was it) and mostly lived alone before I was married, even in a big city. I had no debt besides a mortgage and car payment before the divorce and that was with 2 young children in daycare. Oh, and I am only on my second car ever (I am 42!) and it's just a Ford Focus - not an SUV. So I don't like having this extra debt but it is what it is right now. We actually had decent equity in our house at one time but it was just bad luck that the market was at it's worst when we finalized the divorce settlement. I did get something at least. I am actually quite happy renting now, considering how little I accomplished financially by being a responsible homeowner for so long (we bought before the bubble, didn't over improve, paid ahead on the mortgage before we had two kids in daycare, etc). My ex kept the house and is starting to face expensive problems but I only need to worry about my fridge, washer and dryer in my rental. (Moni, don't forget - even if you pay for that house outright you are going to be paying taxes, insurance and maintenance on it.) The way child support works out and with shared custody, since I make more money, the ex keeps all of his money and I have to spend the difference in our salaries (plus a little more)on daycare and health insurance for the boys (I pay both 100% - and he tried and failed to get more child support on top of that!) It's hard to get ahead financially right now but I have other things going for me and I sleep well at night knowing I am providing for my boys whereas the ex is depending on me and his parents to keep it all going. I do have have trouble with willpower, when it comes to money and food, but I keep trying to keep some sort of balance in both respects as best I can, never expecting to achieve perfection in either but still enjoying life.

I agree with dlm2000! Everybody learns, you just go back and do it better after you've gained more experience. I need to refinish the first oak dresser I stripped and stained, since I didn't completely get all the green paint off, and I never put an actual *finish* on it, just stain. But it's lasted almost 25 years like that and it'll last a couple more. I pulled unused exterior outlets off our old house to use the circuit (box was full) for a whirlpool tub. Before we sold, we had to wire them back in to another circuit (the one for the basement circuit box outlet - may not have met code having another outlet on with the breaker box outlet, but it was the only one that wouldn't have been overloaded, and it was easy to get to). We also removed an old unused water filter in the basement and piece in some new copper (not our "sin" though, PO's) DH has to pull down the circular stone wall he built around our wellhead yesterday, since when he showed it off to me I said "It's beautiful, but umm, you didn't use mortar - I think it's dangerous with the kids around." (it's 3 ft high - I did stacked stone under our porch deck and haven't finished to top course, I didn't use mortar but when the final course is in, it'll be really wedged under, it's only a foot high, and though adults seem to want to step on it instead of walking all the way to the steps in the middle of the porch, the kids haven't been tempted to climb it). He wasn't too happy, so if I want it rebuilt I might have to do it myself. My cousin the carpenter was here for 5 hours today atoning for the past sins of the builder(s). First thing this AM I put another coat of joint compound on the walls that ahd the corners built out so baseboard won't lie flush (so I'm building out the middle). Then he came over and fixed the cabinet that had the left back corner broken out and was only secured to one stud (27" wide cabinet) - he hit both studs on the back and got it tight to side wall so my range has a little more room than it used to, but at least everything on the countertop doesn't rattle when we shut the drawer now! Then he shimmed the window sill so there's no longer a gap in the middle where they nailed it down - closed up the gap at the top too, and pinned the side pieces that hold the screens in a little more securely (Andersen didn't get them tight). Then he cut (and coped the inside corners!) of the shoe mold I stained to hide the gap where the counter meets the wall. Nothing we can do about the overhang not being consistent. Finally, he measured to make a new window sill/stool for the center window in the bay, since it was made out of the same 1x4 stock as the side windows, but the wall must be 1/4" deeper since it projects 1/4" less from the wall than the others. I'm going to have him do a continuous sill running under all 3 windows since the middle window almost completely fills its wall, and the other 2 are not quite symmetrical (right window is 1/8" closer to center than left bay is). He says this isn't really bad construction tolerances, but the lack of symmetry was getting to me - the ends of the sills are so close together that the 1/4" difference in depth and the 1/8" difference in the gap was noticeable. But when he went to double check the precut trim for the right window before he joined it (so mitres would be tight) he found that the top piece was 1/16" short and one of the verticals was twisted, so we have to cut new pieces. He'll do that after he does the sill. We still have to try to get new casing (original cut too short, so at least we have plenty for windows) on the kitchen doorways, but have to get it to lie flat with a twisted stud in the FR. And I don't know what I'm going to do with the pocket doors that are set an inch too high. I might have to move an electrical box in the foyer too - with the front door set an inch off the subfloor, plus the inch threshold, if I hang a semi-flush fixture in palce of the builder's flush fixture, it might hit - I only have 13.5" from top of door to ceiling. Manufacturer site says the fixture is 13" high, but Bellacor say 14" so I have to call, or take my chances and order it. If they had put it a foot back farther, we wouldn't have this problem, and wouldn't have needed 2 lights in the center hall of the foyer "T". The light by the door isn't even lined up with the one at the foot of the stairs, so I don't know what they were thinking.

Love the morning room! Although I would not choose the furniture in any other setting (too ornate for me) it suits the setting and the fabrics lighten the room. The mirror I would use in any setting! I think I'll have another cup of tea. Please ring the butler.

"Averages" aren't as meaningful as "Medians". As has been said, "Assets" are not part of this picture either. I couldn't determine if they're talking total income from all sources or just salaries.

I liked the comment from a Canadian who said he didn't *have* to earn as much due to government benefits...like health insurance.

wow, i used to be rich in detroit, now that my wife is retired, i only qualify as rich in el passo. oh well life blows, i live in detroit and i`am poor.

those numbers do not signify wealth only income to live a certain lifestyle. wealth is what you keep and assets.

It is confusing and I'm not sure I agree with the methodology. In the case of DC, they took the household income data from the census and simply took the top 1/5 of the household income - think of a long list of households with their incomes and chop off the bottom 80% of the list. Now compute the average of the remaining households (the top 20%). Like someone else said, the median would have been more meaningful because Ted Leonsis and Dan Synder are really messing up the average for DC.

What USN&WR did next was really sketchy. The $202,000 figure they give is totally made up and not realistic. The magazine divided the income average ($256,000) by the average number of people in a household (2.54) Then they multipled that result ($100,780) by 2 for a two-person family ($201,560) or by 4 for a four-person family ($403,118). I'm not sure what this does except really mess up the numbers. Are they assuming that all family members work and make the exact same amount?

What's silly (but not surprising.... given typical journalism) is that the metric for "rich" was decided as "income."

Some of the "richest" people in the U.S. have little to zero personal income. WEALTH is NET WORTH (the amount of asset value left over when you subtract leverage and debt.)

In my business I can't tell you how many people I work with (high end professionals) who make serious high six figure incomes, and have so little reserves they still HAVE to work.

When your working assets, and the safe growth they generate passively, are sufficient to cover your costs of a comfortable living WITHOUT you needing a yob... THAT is financial freedom... THAT is sufficient wealth.

As a personal financial advisor for a number of years, one of my major concerns was to encourage my clients to have 3 months' income on hand, so that if there were no paycheque during that period, they would still be afloat ... without sweating blood. If they had 6 months' cushion so much the better, and nine months' even better .. with a year's income a really good goal.

If they had some cushion left after drawing their assets down during such a period, so much the better.

If I had some cash on hand, not needed for awhile I'd probably use it to buy some quality stock that's had its price beaten down ... for there's a lot of tax-loss selling at the year-end, and usually an increase in price in January.

I'd rather run out of life before I run out of money, preferable to running out of money ... with some life remaining to live! On what?

Thanks jenswren! Fun read. I posted the Global Rich List link so that anyone feeling "poor" and see how fortunate we are in the US.

I think $25 million would be my threshold definition of "rich" - this, by the way, doesn't mean I would turn my nose up at $2.5 million or even $25,000.

Merely counting income is a weird way to decide who is 'rich'. You need to look at debts and assets too.

I think that it was Chris Rock who gave the best differentiation between rich and wealthy:

Shaquille O'Neal is rich.

The person who signs his paycheck is wealthy.
