What is the Biggest Selling Crop Grown in US

I saw it on CNN and MSNBC. It was mariuanna (can't spell) It beat out corn and wheat together.

Mostly grown in National Forests.

I'm still in shock. Can't think of anything else to say.

I wonder what the criteria was for calling it the best selling crop.

My guess is that it might be the most profitable if the 'farmer' doesn't get caught. Imagine what the street value would be for a bushel of maryjane as opposed to corn.

I'm not shocked, though I might have been had I actually heard the reports.

Both large and small plantings are found often within a 100 mile radius of me. Occasionally (I think) the street value is a million dollars or more. A farmer would have to raise a far greater amount of corn or beans to be worth that amount of money.

It was written by California marijuana policy researcher Jon Gettman who wants potlegalized nationwide....

Yes I have posted here several times about the excellent results I have had from using SF nems in eliminating the majority of my RKN problems (not to mention the elimination of many other soil-dwelling pests). But I will qualify that by saying I never grow carrots in that particular garden as they aren't a part of the rotation schedule for that garden. So I can't attest to the results of using them for that particular crop. There are many strains of beneficial nems but SF nems are the only ones that are consistently recommended for RKN. I also think it makes a difference where you order them from as my batch from GardensAlive appears to have been much more effective than the batch I ordered from another supplier. I'm not saying they are the only good source, just the one I used. But I'd recommend buying them from a fully reputable vendor only. Dave

storing home grown potatoes for next year crop

To each his/her own, but beware of false logic..... Small potatoes are not necessarily "more likely produced by weaker, less fit plants more likely to have been infected with viruses and other potato diseases," as proposed by mike_marietta above. Small potatoes are the ones formed last and have not had time to grow large by the time the potatoes are dug and harvested. It's just like with so many other vegetables/fruits; the ones formed close to harvest, won't be as large/ripe/mature as the ones formed earlier. The old timers I grew up around knew their potatoes and how to grow them. They had grown potatoes for generations. They chose the smaller (1 to 1.5-inch dia) potatoes for seed, and I guess the reason was that the smaller ones have more eyes and, therefore, produced higher yields. And perhaps they believed that the small potatoes were less likely to be diseased due to their young age. Sometimes with store/market-bought potatoes, the largest potatoes have diseased parts, whereas the smaller potatoes from the same harvest/bin don't have diseased parts. On the issue of storing potatoes in the ground, I'd be concerned about mice and other vermin eating and fouling the potatoes with excrement. On the issue of wrapping seed potatoes, it sounds like a very good idea.

Raspberries: ever bearing vs. summer bearing for biggest crop

Yeah, it would. As you only can harvest 2/3 of the plant. You can plant early, mid and late summer bearing. Some good ones are Encore (late), Prelude (early), and Taylor. I have these and also Cascade Gold. I have yet to evaluate the latter, but the others produce well, and have good tasting berries. Prelude though acts like an everbearing, so not sure why it is considered Summer? It produced a fall crop. Great tasting berries on this one. I really like them. I had a number of fall bearing that also produced late, but I believe it is because they are new. Fall Gold did the same thing for a couple years, but now the fall crop was the first finished of all cultivars. It needed time to adapt I guess? I like both types btw. And yeah you do need a lot of plants to get a decent harvest. But they propagate easily, room is my problem. I'm maxed out, but for a good 7 weeks I was getting about 30 berries a day, this was decent, and expect even more next year. Some fall and almost all the summer bearing didn't produce the first year. Rosanna, Double Gold, and Honey Queen fall bearers bloomed too late. I will keep canes for a summer crop. Himbo Top, Caroline, Polka, Fall Gold, Kiwi Gold, Crimson Night, and Prelude did produce. So next year I should get around 50 berries a day probably for over 9 weeks. Here's a recent photo of part of my full sun patch. The back bed is raspberries. The front beds are blueberries, and strawberries. I also have 2 black raspberries, and 8 blackberry or blackberry-raspberry hybrids. Next year I'm going to be drowning in berries! This year between the 4x4 beds I added 1x4 beds to add beneficial flowers to attract bees and predator insects. Nothing NEW, but from the last couple of years experience at a small-town market, 30+ vendors, that gets a customer mix of local farmers/ex-farmers, "townies" and cottagers from the city, here are some of basic twists that have worked well for me: * fresh carrots w/ tops right through the season: not baby but picked quite young 5"-6". These go at way higher prices for a 1lb bunch, competing with quarter-bushel baskets of regular big mature topped carrots all around me, and they sell out. * fresh basil: sells well at a good price, and is great for the smell, which everyone notices walking by * heirloom tomatoes: Ours is not a trendy high-end market, there's a good mix of people as noted above, and heirlooms (as in big, "oddly" colored and shaped, sometimes "ugly", always tasty) still attract attention, and definitely get repeat customers from taste (and I guess the novelty helps). A basic like Brandywine is fine, and I had a several varieties last year with different looks and tastes (Green Zebra was a distinctive favorite), which helped even more. Curious people try one or two and keep coming back for more(!), and they were going for $1.50-2.00 a pop (12-16oz) - I just made up the price, since no one else had 'em at the market. *snap peas (edible pod): I was amazed by how many people didn't know these even existed! I'd go, "You can eat the pod" and hand 'em one and they'd automatically start shelling it. "No, you can eat the whole thing!" Wow! Child-like amazement :) They're also great to maximize the pea growing and picking effort because you can use 'em young as a snow pea, or mature, which gives more overall useful harvest time. You can maybe premium price 'em, but they're also good just for the word-of-mouth. *mesclun: I'm not sure what my various customers each think they're buying, the idea of mesclun has kinda trickled down to a real mainstream thing from a trendy idea. I sell a couple of mixes, one that's only lettuce (around nine lettuces), which I'll explain to anyone who wants to know, and of the various regular customers who buy a bag (1lb) a week, I don't think any of them really cared about the exact ingredients, they just like colorful, baby leaf salad mix, for their own individual reasons. At $5 a bag, a heavy seller. *spinach: This is probably more specific to our market, where there are several quite big local family farm growers that all concentrate on the basic carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, beans, peas, etc, (easier handling/storage), but not on the fresh greens. So this depends a lot on the other vendors, but here, mounds of spinach is a good thing to have (and other greens, like lettuces, chard, etc, are quick and easy and add to the selection). *radish that's out of the typical early season is quick and easy to grow, and attracts a surprising number of people when no-one else has 'em. *miscellaneous specialty stuff: I plant small quantities of tons of things and bring some in. They're all good for novelty and attracting attention, but (for me in this specific situation...), none most alone don't do much for the bottom line. Stuff like: Eight Ball zucchini (lots of comments), Lemon cukes (comments and some regulars), white icicle type radish, rainbow chard (like, Bright Lights), purple snap beans (comments, but people mainly like the green and the yellow...), and so on, I even sold a few daikon radishes... All fun to grow and present but no magic. Half the fun seems to be trying new things without getting buried in a lot of odd and unusual ;) stuff... The general strategy of growing out of season really does work. This is practical if you're small. Having the earliest stuff is great, and just having it when no-one else does to me is just as much of an advantage. Superfreshness is also great, and probably most easily done when you're small. I mean, extreme freshness: stuff cut/picked the afternoon/evening before, salad greens the morning of... People really notice that: "hey, I forgot your mesclun in the fridge for TEN DAYS and it was still fine..." Also, if you grow natural, even if not certified organic, all kinds of people you mightn't expect to respond to that... Hope that's useful stuff in their! (I've got lots to learn, but passing on the little I have noticed already is always FUN!!)

Now if only someone could figure out how to use it for fuel to run our cars. hmmmm gosh I wonder if the smoke in the air would make people a little more mellow or maybe that would be a bit to dangerous. ok never mind I'm babbling now. Sorry! lol

Actually, hemp can be used as fuel, same as any other plant--turn it to ethanol. Like corn. And it has the added advantage of not making foods more expensive because of increased demand.

It's also a better source of paper pulp than trees. Grows quicker, more renewable.

I wish they'd give up already and admit they've lost the 'war on drugs' worse than iraq. Around here the biggest crop isn't MJ, it's meth. Tiny towns w/ populations in the low hundreds have a few meth busts every year. And yet, it doesn't go away. And the rest of us can't buy a freaking cold pill because they're used for meth production. And yet, it doesn't go away. Because the dealers are smarter than the govt, and find another ingredient.

Just legalize it, sell it at CVS, and tax it like cigarettes. The deficit would be gone in a year. Or, people would lose interest because it's no longer 'forbidden.'

Hear, hear!! To me, that "war" and useless programs like D.A.R.E. are poster children for zero-based-budgeting the entire government. It's just money spent stupidly, with no consideration as to the return on the investment. It probably sounds quite cold of me to say that, but every single one of us balances cost versus benefit all day, every day. Why we cannot apply that kind of judgement to the "war" on drugs or the wisdom of subsidizing tobacco farmers and then paying for the long-term care of tobacco users just completely escapes me. Unfortunately, anyone in elected office who raises such questions probably will hear carefully-edited bites of those trenchant questions come the next election; soundbites that will make him/her sound like they're against apple pie and puppies. :-(

Add me to the chorus, too! I'm nearly 50, and like many of you I've had too much experience to buy into the notion of a "war" on drugs. For heaven's sake, let's move on and deal honestly with the issue.

The meth. issue is just starting to become problematic in my state; there was a pretty big bust a month/so ago. Insulated as we have been (relatively) I was unaware of how sweeping the problem is in the mid-west. AND how expensive a problem it is in the penal system... evidently, meth. destroys teeth and the costs to taxpayers who fund the medical/DENTAL care in correctional facilities has increased exponentially in the past few years.

And we're still flipping out about grass?! Why am I even surprised?

You want to end drug use, stop trying to block drugs. You need to make people want to stop using drugs.

There's a simple solution: posion the drug supply.

I thought prostitution and gambling were legalized. But i'm just an old country girl and all i know is most tv stars today appear to be prostitutes and gambleing is also featured on tv a lot, even news,lotteries powerball etc.
Yes, down in town i hear of meth labs. For all the good laws seem to do they may as well be legalized.

Had to go to sherrifs office to complain abt a bad neighbor. There was a notice on the wall offering $2500 for info for indicting marijuana growers. I told my DD "we could make a fortune hikeing around our mts." She replied " We would'nt live to report the first grower."
