Hi..I am new to the cooking forum but have been around the Florida Gardening forum for a couple of years. I just stumbled upon this by chance and boy am I glad I did. I must confess until now I have just been lurking. But thanks to everyone here I have a new William-Sonoma electric popcorn popper and I made the great Spanish Bar cake. I love to cook and check this site every evening. Thanks for making this forum so enjoyable.

wow what a familair story sierra, my collection has also grown this year, and because of this forum I am also expecting my own papillio to be deliverd to me next week, oh the anticipation. Lora your right I have my very first bloom about to open up in the next few days, the first bulb I was ever given a few years ago, how apt, but following on from that are all my new market finds and mail order babies. I have managed to collect a dozen or so new varietys in the last two years and this year I am expecting a long and colorfull showing.

It is difficult to say. It could be cold damage. Can you post a picture?? 40 degrees is a bit low for plumerias if they remain that cool for a long time. Is the greenhouse warmer during the day? Have they been getting some moisture? There are many other factors. I had one that got a weird spot about 4 inches down from the tip, but it eventually dried up and is OK. I think it burned from being too close to a light source but not sure.

I'm in central Florida. I now have two big worm bins and they seem to survive both summer and winter. Make sure absolutely no sun hits your bin directly!!!!!! That would heat it up far more than you might think and in turn dry it out much faster. My bins are built from plywood and 2 x 4s. The tops are simply screen or hardware cloth to allow air. I think having legs on the bin is important so you can place the feet in containers of mineral oil to keep ants from climbing up into the bin. My bins are in an old dog kennel that we have wrapped in shade cloth and tarps to keep the sun out and the bins shaded. During the Hottest part of summer you need to check the moisture content of the bin more often but you still don't want to make it so wet that the bottom of the bin gets anaerobic and smelly. I find that the top couple inches of bedding in my bins is usually quite dry but most of the bin is still moist enough. Last summer we went away for a few weeks and when we got back the bins were a bit too dry but our worm population has bounced back even so and I've already harvested about 5 bucket fulls of castings and probably have another 5 to go. Our first summer with the worm bin I would take frozen jugs of water and place them in the worm bin to help cool things but now I don't think that is really needed unless the bin were getting some direct sun light or if we were having another summer like 1998 when it was 104 in the shade during May and the state burned. Where ever you place the bin, keep in mind that harvesting worm castings can be a messy procedure (I would avoid placing the bin where there is carpet.) And what type of bin you use, if there are ants around, you want the bin on a stand or to have legs you can place in containers of liquid to keep the ants from climbing in. Also make sure there are no other paths into the bin (don't let it touch the wall or leave anything leaning against it or let plants touch it.) It really sucks to stick your hand into the worm castings only to be bitten up by fire ants!!!! And materials, I like wood bins cause they breath a bit better than plastic so moisture and temperature are a bit easier to control. Only major change I'm planning for my bins is the replace the screen covers with some cage wire or hardware cloth as some critter has chewed through the screen. In summer my bins get lots of Black Soldier fly larva in them which I actually like since my fish and chickens love eating those far more than eating the worms. Never saw this before - am intrigued except I am being forced to use nylon/plastic/silicone utensils at the moment but I found something very similar at: www.artisantable.com - solid square spoon www.amazon.com - large blunt end spoons, set of 2 and one in wood. www.kitchencarvers.com - the spoon you can't live without and another one called spoontula - these look more comfortable but I don't know how you feel about wood. I searched square spoon for stirring, flat head spoon and blunt spoon. HTH.

WOW...the response is great.Glad I am no longer a lurker. I guess I could be considered an MLC virgin, but can remedy that (I think) :>) I am from South Florida, Boynton Beach to be exact (about 45 minutes north of Ft Lauderdale.) Originally from Western Maryland. I'm a nurse by profession but a cook by passion.

Hi Cathy!

I just replied to you about 1/2 hour ago! A Florida CF'ers reunion sounds like a great plan. Woodie, Flagler Beach isn't too far, at least I don't think it is:-) Is it south of St. Augustine?

Jackie, I lived in Coral Springs, then Parkland, for almost 15 years before we moved up here to Central Florida. Boynton Beach is really growing and changing, lots of new young families moving in.

had it not been for this forum, i would never have been successful at baking bread.

have you seen any of the food pix? there are many on the forum that post their pix, but then there are the cream of the crop food photogs that blow me away with not only what they prep, but their pix. and there's sharon who lives in heaven on earth.

this is a wonderful group of people - generous beyond words in their thoughts, actions and deeds. you'll love it here, i know i do.
