Anyone buy food from GFS?

I have a large gathering coming up and need to buy some large volume food products. I've gotten several things from GFS in the past - in particular their sheet brownies, cookies and frozen veggies. All of which were very good - especially their frozen cookies that are already made.

They have breakfast casseroles that would be so very convenient, but they're fairly large and cost enough, I hesitate to buy one to try it out before the event. Also, has anyone tried their macaroni or potato salad? Again, a huge tub to buy for the 3 of us!

I also need a lemonade dry mix enough to make 9-10 gallons over a few days. Anyone have a favorite dry mix? Country Time is the only one I've ever tried, and while I can't say it wasn't awful, it doesn't stand out in my memory so I'm thinking it must have been not so tasty.

Any other suggestions for a large gathering that you've gotten at GFS, Costco or Sam's Club? I prefer GFS because there's no membership fee, but the others are close by too.

I have never heard of GFS, but I know a lot of people here use Costco as their go-to place for things like this. We also have a couple of independent grocery stores that do platters, salads, etc in large sizes. Maybe check out a local/smaller grocery, deli, or caterer?

Forget the lemonade dry-mix. Buy some bottled lemon juice and make a simple syrup ahead of time and mix it up fresh as you need it!

Ilene, I don't think our doctors test for vitamin D unless they have a reason to suspect a deficiency. I know vitamin D is especially important for "women of a certain age" because it helps the body absorb calcium......so, even if you take calcium to prevent bone loss, you need to have vitamin D too or your body can't use that calcium. I try to get that 15 minutes of sun every day. It is easy to do....just work outside a bit before putting on sunscreen. Well, it isn't easy to do this month..... One thing that surprises me is how many young folks will tell me they don't like tomatoes and think they taste just dreadful. Of course, in their young lives, all they've experienced generally are store-bought tomatoes. If you give them a garden-fresh tomato and can convince them to try it, suddenly they have a whole new attitude about tomatoes. I've also had people ask me when our home-grown potatoes and green beans (among other things) are so tasty....they'll make comments like "I didn't know green beans could taste like that". LOL I tell them "this is how food is supposed to taste". Maybe they'll never become gardeners, but at least now they have an idea that fresh veggies really are better, and maybe they'll search out fresh locally-grown food at farmer's markets or at least buy and cook fresh veggies from the store, instead of canned or frozen ones. And, speaking of canned veggies.....I hardly buy canned veggies at the stores during the gardening season, but needed to buy some canned beans and corn last week to throw together a quick pot of taco soup to take to a bereaved family. The prices of the canned veggies shocked me! Apparently, while we've been busy eating fresh for the last few months, food prices have been climbing. It is funny how you don't even notice that kind of thing if you aren't buying those items. It sure made me appreciate the veggies that I do have put up in the freezers and root cellar. (I'm just going to call the tornado shelter the root cellar from now on....because we might visit it once a year when a tornado threatens....but it is a root cellar every day, year-round. I store all my home-canned goods there too.) I haven't seen Dr. Oz's new show yet, although I keep meaning to find time to watch it. I've read one of his books and liked it, but some of it is a little extreme for me. Dawn

I have two recently launched children, both have an interest in cooking. Daniel was pleased with the Betty Crocker Cooking Basics cookbook. I gave his ex girlfriend the Cooking Light Complete Cookbook. Both cover cooking techniques, ingredients, pantry basics, and have loads of photos. Alice came home recently and expressed a desire for a cast iron skillet. I gave her mine. It was given to me by my grandmother when I was the same age. She also asked for the waffle iron. I bought Danny a selection of herbs and spices. On each one I taped a list of recipes and foods for which each ingredient works well. He wanted a nice pepper mill and pepper corns, too. I know that Danny as well as Alice and her roommates love having good coffee and grind their own. And they use their crock pot a lot. One of them proudly showed me her very nice mandolin. Alice has always been a baker. Danny likes stove top cooking. It might be useful to know what she likes to eat. The Cooking Light Complete Cookbook was a good choice for Danny's ex GF as she is not a red meat eater and can't eat dairy. There were lots of options for her in the cookbook. This is also an age group that grew up with cooking shows so maybe she is a Rachel Ray or other celeb chef fan. That might help in selecting a gift, too.

Anyone ever buy dog food that had maggots?!

Actually I had it occur twice from the same bag AFTER we purchased it. Oddly enough it not in the actual bag but in the container we store the dog food in for easier access. The maggots may have been another type of worm since they looked really small. Oddly enough the suspected and mysterious bugs were only in the cup we used to scoop out the dog food. There were no maggots in the actual dog food itself so we thought it was just in the cup. A few days later again they were in just the cup. I was not as alarmed as my girlfriend was because they were really little and in the cup. She wanted to throw the entire bag away while I was still just trying to figure out what was going on. In order to fix this problem without throwing the dog food away, the container we have is now in the freezer. Since only the container would get them and knowing there was no way they could get in inside the actual kibbles and in the freezer, that is what we have done. The girlfriend is happy because there are no more bugs, I am happy that we did not have to waste the bag, but not sure how the puppies feel about the cold dog food. They do still gobble it up right away so the need to even warm it up or leave at room temperature is not needed. Hope this helps....although the case is still out about where the heck they got in there. I will add to the post if they make it into the freezer. ;)

Matti5 - so glad to hear you were finally diagnosed and feeling so much better. I live in Canada - I had the blood test you speak of. In Ontario, if you have the test at the hospital - it's free of charge. If you have the test at the Dr's office it costs $130.00. I had it at the hospital and the results came back negative for Celiac. I've had 2 endoscopies and 1 colonoscopy and all is well. In fact, after the second endoscopy and biopsies, the Internist called me on a Saturday morning to tell me everything was perfect. Two years ago I had a total hysterectomy - the doctor had to leave my cervix as it has adhered to my abdominal wall. I tell you - I give up! This is sooo frustrating. bigbaby - I also fear that I will get tired of my own cooking. I am definitely going to look into the cookbook "Everyday Grain Free Gourmet". My 20 yr old son has a red meat allergy, so we eat a lot of chicken, turkey and a bit of fish. When he was little, and I'd make a hamburger patty for him, he'd push it away. He would do the same with roast beef and pork. I was concerned and took him for allergy testing. The doctor confirmed he was allergic to beef, pork, veal, lamb. He can eat free range beef (but having gone without it most of his life, he doesn't like the texture). Will definitely post on Tuesday after my Dr's appt. Can't wait. Sue

I have purchased food from GFS and been pleased with I think everything. The hospital where I work gets most if not all of their food from there.

I am sure I have had the salads but don't recall them being bad or outstanding. sorry.

Their soups are very good especially the Baja Chicken Enchilada and they have dill pickles sliced lengthwise that are great for sandwiches.

We are huge Sam's Club shoppers here and have been pleased with all of our food items from there.

The traditional dry lemonade mixes seem to not be so sweet anymore, but that might be because my tastebuds are more accustomed to aspertame now, like in Crystal Light.

I would experiment with KGLisa's suggestion, or even with store-brand frozen lemonade. It's not as fast to prepare (as long as you remember to defrost), but I'm sure it'd be tastier than the dry mixes. (I wouldn't do the Crystal Light for a crowd, because it's comparatively expensive and some people get headaches from aspartame; I do if I've had too much.)

At the Costcos near here, many times there are food samplings. I think on Fridays, perhaps, they have a LOT of samplings. You might call your GFS or other similar places to explain you're uncertain about some of their prepared-food offerings and wondering if there's a day of the week that they traditionally offer samples.

The Empanadas at Costco are fabulous but I don't know if you want anything heated. We also splurged on a Costco watermelon and it was perfection. I've never trusted the salads though from any of the stores. I always make ours home made because the ingredients can spoil so easily.

I shop at GFS and like it very much. I can recommend the large bag of washed romaine lettuce in ready to serve, ok need to cut a few pieces, as a caesar salad. It's $4 for at least 2 lbs. Check the expir. date to get the freshest one. I then bought Naturally Fresh caesar dressing at a regular supermarket, expensive, but the lettuce os so cheap. And good croutons. It was the only dish on our buffet table of maybe 14 items, that was devoured. The teens in my family loved it.

lukki, you have empanadas at your Costco?!! I wish that we had more variety at ours. I always drool over the offerings at the Costco in Burbank when I visit my daughter in LA.

I don't think that I have ever had anything I didn't like from Costco. Their prepared foods are reliably delicious.

The ones I get are fresh; not the Don Miguel's in the freezer section. They're very popular here, so I can't imagine that they're not available at all the Costco locations. They're located in that section next to the meat department where the prepared foods, cheeses and salsa's are. They come in two tub like containers with about 40 pieces in each. They're totally yummy and great for gatherings.

I'm in there all the time, if you want, I can find out the brand for you next time I go in.
