Mattress question

I have been shopping for a mattress and it is so confusing. I have some questions.

1 - What do you think of the sleep number bed?

2 - What do you think of a tempurpedic or the Dormia brand mattress?

3 - How can you really comparison shop for mattresses knowing how the business makes that impossible.

4 - What brands besides Simmons would have a mattress where I would not feel another person moving on the bed?

5 - Why does it seem like I can always get 1/2 off the listed price?

Any suggestions would be great.

This is a pretty good little forum.

Use the search button for your questions and remember that a lot of the members are biased one way or another. But, you can get some good info and some good opinions on certain mattresses.

Not much, but some people love them

2 - What do you think of a tempurpedic or the Dormia brand mattress?

Tempurpedic is the real deal. They are the only ones that make their own visco, from a formula they developed. Dormia is imported from contract factories in China. Don't trust ANYTHING made in China thats chemical based. They'll cheat the formula to make a few extra bucks.

BTW, most visco beds are made in China. Yes, even Sealy visco mattresses are made in China. If you want visco, spend a little more for Tempurpedic.

3 - How can you really comparison shop for mattresses knowing how the business makes that impossible.

Its not impossible. Ask what questions to ask. If you don't like the answers, don't do business at that place. Don't try to save the last dollar.

4 - What brands besides Simmons would have a mattress where I would not feel another person moving on the bed?

Tempurpedic, Laura Ashley. Pure visco beds are really the best for this though. And king size is best for this as well, two people on a queen gives each person less sleep space than a twin. On a queen you'll feel the other person because he/she is just too close to you.

5 - Why does it seem like I can always get 1/2 off the listed price?

You're shopping at the screaming deal stores. You'll never know what you're buying there, because the staff doesn't know what they're selling. They do know which beds have SPIFs (Sales Performance Incentive Funds - basically a sales bonus).

Don't be afraid of people. Go to a regular furniture store. No not an Ashley store, a regular independent or mom-n-pop store. I promise the salespeople won't bite. If they do then go to a different store. Most will know what they're selling and don't have SPIFs to influence them.

I'd like to suggest you see if anyone locally sells Serta perfect sleepers. They are the most widely used commercial coil in the world. Meaning that's the brand most hotels use because it is a pretty strong coil. A 13 gauge is a sturdy wire for a mattress, the thickest I am aware of is a 12.75. I sell beds for a living, but in Canada, so it's hard for me to know about the price comparison. Here I would sell the specs you've described not as the top of the line at all, but as a great kids or guest bed. However I'd likely sell it for 399.00-499.00 depending on the amount of comfort layers there were on it. I'd thought the prices of beds in the U.S. was less, I could be wrong.I haven't sold a two sided bed for 5 years and don't own one either, I don't feel it is a real benefit nowadays with the different technology that's used in beds. If this is a company bed a one sided matt should last a very long time for occasional use.I also feel sometimes there can be a benefit to dealing with a brand name product and a local business if any issues arise. I have the TempurPedic mattress protector and it does not sound or feel plastic-y at all. I purchased it at the same time as the mattress a couple of years ago from the TempurPedic retailer, so I'm certain it is the one recommended. I hope I can help since I spent over 1 year researching mattresses. Never buy any pillowtop because basically it's memory foam on top and will break down and form lumps in the top. If you want a good mattress buy one and add on a latex topper for softness. There is company called Shifman, which has been around for ages, and you can still flip it over. Most mattresses don't allow you to turn them over anymore. Sterns and Foster makes decent mattresses. Basically they change names to prevent you from comparison shopping. I bought a organic latex mattress from Savvy Rest. They are located in Va. but have stores where you can try them out. You order according to your configuration. It's not the normal type of mattress but basically you design your layers and you can have a configuration that is good for your needs. The latex layers lie inside a well made zip top cover. Is it ideal? Not really all that I dreamed of. We had our last mattress for 32 years and we were used to a firm mattress. Initially, my back was still sore cause it's a matter of getting your muscles used to something different. Latex (natural) lasts forever and isn't hot to sleep on. The organic part was a plus, but not necessarily a necessity. Some of the Sealy brands are not natural latex and some stores sell latex mattresses that aren't fully latex, but an inch or two on top and they call it latex. A foam pad won't solve the problem; it will just follow the contours of the mattress. Have you rotated and/or turned it (assuming it can be flipped)? That might help. Depending on how deep the valleys are, that's not normal--but it probably is average, if you know what I mean. Mattresses shouldn't do that, and the ones our parents bought generally did not. But most of today's mattresses are made with inferior materials and workmanship, and they don't hold up well. I went through many mattresses (five in as many years, I think, getting my money back each time, thank heavens) before I followed the advice to buy from a small, independent mattress manufacturer and buy something fairly firm--and then top it with a couple of inches of good quality foam. I love my bed!! Good luck with this, Joann. I had mattress reps come to the house several times to measure depressions in my mattresses. Each time they were deep enough to warrant a refund.

Stay away from the Sealy pillow tops cause after only a few months, Me and hubby have our own little holes and indent from the weight of our bodies and I hate it. Already thinking of buying another mattress and it will probably be a Simmon dream sleeper like I had before.

Can I ask the price you paid, if its Posturepedic (will say on the label if it is) and if its queen or king? I sell Sealy and I've never had that problem, but I only sell the middle prices.

I bought a tempurpedic about 3 months ago, had back achiness every morning due to a cheap mattress I LOVE IT
very comfortable and i did research on the foam and it is true that it is made of high quality foam. made in china foam runs risk of cheap/substandard material yes temp. is more $$ but well worth the peace of mind for quality foam mattress and great warranty/guarantee imo good luck

To anyone looking for a mattress: Please read the forum linked in the second post above. You can buy a mattress equal to or better that a Temp. for less money. And you get to make all the choices. There is a lot of misinformation in the mattress business. Educate yourself and beware.
