Have you looked into runners? The link below is a company with a huge variety. They also make stair treads. Not sure if stair treads would work in your situation. Ask your contractor. There is also a company that makes custom runners out of New Zealand wool. A runner 33" wide x 27" feet (my basement stairs) runs about $1500. RugStudio's rugs are poly-something and much cheaper. Good for you. I don't know many women who would tackle the dirty work you have completed and it looks well done. I do notice a couple things that I'll offer as suggestions however. I notice your water heater nearby. They all eventually leak. After the surprise to your DH, have him install a drain pan under the water heater. That way you will be able to direct water from the leaking water heater into a floor drain. Also, cut the drywall away from the floor at least 1". That way it won't wick moisture from the concrete. You'll cover this with base trim. I'm sure you've measured the rack and know the guns will fit before the ceiling slopes. You only have about 3 feet of width so storing anything large to the forward portion of your space will require getting past the rack (or cabinet). Rods on the opposite wall. Make certain you have a dehumidifier. Basements can be damp and without one, not a good place to store hunting equipment and ammunition. If my DW undertook a project like this for me, I would be speechless. Hope he appreciates the space.

You don't mention any future plans for the basement. Do you have expectations to finish it or leave as a utility space? We finished ours after several years of living in the house. Original steps were painted wood and were fairly noisy when walking upon them. So, in conjunction with finishing the basement we did the following: Relocated the door in the hallway to the stairway landing in order to relieve congestion of a door opening into the main hall. Painted the walls with a quality washable paint. Painted the stringers. Upgraded the bannister. Added better lighting. Carpeted the steps and risers. Now with an open stairway the basement is inviting and traversing up and down is quiet. Better foot traction too.

Agree with Sue, Staircase should be illuminated at the top or bottom which is more than enough...Like she said if you have money burning a hole in your pocket, you can light it up any which way you can, I have seen illuminated risers, or like the image she provided or enough of recessed lighting to give you a sun tan by the time you reach the last step.
