ideas for finishing basement stairs

homebound

I finished our basement, but the stairs are old pine treads, and the bottom step was extended to become a landing (with plywood, so there's a thin gap between the ply and the step).

I'm wondering how to finish it adding as little height as possible. 3/4" would even be too much, due to the stair header and low ceiling. Any Ideas? I suppose I could carpet the entire thing, but I was thinking about applying a laminate and then installing a runner instead. Any other ideas? Thanks much.
