Cleaning Wood Blinds
Comments (1)The first thing I like to do when I clean my wood blinds is vacuum them. This removes large particles and sucks them into the bag/hepa filter. Then I use water with some vinegar (about 9 parts water to 1 part vinegar). I use a cloth towel and ring as much water out as I can so that the towel is only damp. I run the cloth towel over the upper and lower part of the slats. It takes a little time but I think it is worth it. Also, I vacuum them each week, but I don't use the water/vinegar on them about every 3-4 months....See Moreclean nicotine from wood furniture
Comments (3)I avoid water on antique furniture at all costs...if the finish is laquer or shellac water will cloud the finish. Nicotine is not an oil....but the smoke from tobacco can seem oily. Nicotine is water soluable....smoke stains are often oil based. Nicotine soak through to your skin from washing smoke stains off of furniture??? I really don't think that is a problem. You are not dealing with nicotine, but rather with smoke stains. Treat them like any oily stain. Mineral spirits is the safest way....See MoreClean/Polish WOOD furniture - what do u use?
Comments (18)I just use a damp (not wet, more like half-dry) rag to clean/dust. If I bring home a really filthy antique or the cabinets have gotten very dirty (which happens if we cook a lot of oily fish on the stovetop, for example - the oil gets into the air and settles on the cabinets, which then attracts dirt), a trace of a mild dish detergent in a little water does the trick, wiped away with another damp cloth and dried immediately. Wood should never be completely wetted and even more importantly water should not be left to stand on wood surfaces. I don't keep a high polish on my wood (nothing I own needs it) but once or twice a year I'll go over things with Guardsman trigger spray polish. I use Old English Scratch Cover to repair damage on dark wood, but not as a polish. I used to keep my antiques waxed (with Briwax) which kept them really beautiful, but just haven't been able to keep up with that in the last couple of years - other things just ended up higher on the priority list and it never got done. If you think you will ever want to refinish a piece of furniture, do not use Pledge or other silicone-containing polish. It soaks into the wood through microscopic fissures in the existing finish and that residue will cause spots or craters called fisheyes and often finish separation. Silicone is very hard to remove during the refinishing process and don't count on even a skilled refinisher being able to do so effectively....See MoreCleaning 65 year old wood walls
Comments (2)I don't know if this is "right" but I lived in a century home with one room that had wood walls. I cleaned the walls with mild soapy water and rinsed. Then I used a rag and put Old English Lemon oil on them. I did this to all the natural wood work. Did this yearly for 10 years and the wood looked clean and had luster....See Morebobismyuncle
