Avocado and Wasabi Ice Cream

After my last mishap, I made a vow to myself not to post recipes on the day that they are created. I just get a little too excited, and it clouds my judgement. So I won't post the recipe to this (not that anyone asked for it) just yet, but I am on food cloud 9 right now so I wanted to share the pic (which is awful. I really need to invest in a real camera.) Per Dcarch's suggestion, I used tapioca flour instead of corn starch. This turned out fantastic- I've never had wasabi ice cream but I do love avocado ice cream and I felt they were a match made in heaven. I am loving this ice cream maker!

I don't know how I feel about the wasabi peas being used as decoration. Little silly? Anyways, happy cooking!

I've never had avocado ice cream so I'm not quite "tasting" it, but I'm all over the wasabi. Love a little heat in my sweet. Looks good to me!

My entire garden (vegetable garden) is over the leach field. The only thing that I've noticed is that you don't have to water as much in the summer. If your septic tank is working properly, it shouldn't be an issue at all. My Mom's garden was there, too, the whole time I was growing up. It didn't hurt us any! I do plant some veggies that have LONG roots, like okra, no problems. I think that the leach field would only be beneficial to your bananas, also.

How do you pronounce "Maque Choux"? One of my food rules is "if you can't pronounce it, don't eat it" which is usually reserved for lists of chemicals on food labels. Tilapia are edible? They definitely aren't any fun to catch, they just lay there limply on the line. Generally I toss them back again and fish for something that wiggles more but maybe I'll try eating one. Other folks have said they are tasty but they just don't seem to be a very tasty looking fish. Perhaps the Maque Choux recipe could be made with Ahi or Mahimahi fish? The idea of using half an avocado to hold something which can be scooped out with a bite of avocado each time is a brilliant idea, though. Wonder what else could be put in the middle of an avocado and then scooped out? Salad dressing comes to mind, perhaps sour cream or refried beans? Hmm, half an avocado filled with hot refried beans and melted cheese over the top as an appetizer? Maybe stick some corn chips around the edges? That's basically chips and dip with a different presentation. Well, even with a half gallon of guacamole there wasn't any leftovers to try freezing so I don't know how freezing it will work yet. My DH considered the guacamole a success at his meeting since what he brought all vanished and the store bought stuff someone else brought was almost untouched by the end of his meeting. Hopefully the next batch will turn out as well although it will probably be a much smaller batch. I think next time I'll mix all the ingredients except the spiced tomatoes and then fold in the spiced tomatoes at the end. The color was a bit weird when the tomatoes were mixed in with everything else. Usually, guacamole is mixed up by hand, but with that quantity, I used the Kitchen Aid and it mixed the tomatoes in too much. It still all vanished though so perhaps the meeting wasn't very well lit. I looked at Hass avocados at the grocery store and they wanted $2 each for them! And such tiny things, too! Probably it is mostly the cost of shipping them in, I'd suspect. Personally, I think that shipping avocados to Hawaii would be like shipping corn to Nebraska but they seem to be doing it. The red oval avocados are still dropping and now the large light green oblong avocados are starting to fall. The dark green round ones are still being ignored since we have better ones to eat.

i have heard of it along with a few other trini jamaican varieties but have never seen an actual tree or fruit. down here you mostly see the varieties they cultivated specifically for this region or asian varieties that flourish better in humidity like nam doc mai. in order to get those varieties you would have to ship a graft and im not sure of the protocol for that. i am not interested in these haden seedling/florida cultivars too much, i grow julie, alphonse, nam doc mai, po pyu kalay and chocanon mango varieties from the islands like Julie may have Anthracnose problems here Here is a link that might be useful: BRVFC has an extensive list of mango varieties

I made avocado ice cream years ago. I lived alone at the time. I ate a small bowl and the rest languished in my freezer for too long until I tossed it in a freezer purge. The texture was lovely, the taste, odd but okay. Not worth the effort or waste of good 'cados in my opinion. If I want green ice cream, green tea flavor or pistachio are much nicer choices!

Thank you. I know avocado ice cream sounds strange, but in other countries it's almost unheard of to use them in savory dishes. There was a little Vietnamese coffee shop I used to go to where I always ordered avocado shakes. I was a little hesitant the first time but became instantly hooked.

Very nice picture. Love the fortune cookie and wasabi peas.

The Chinese, who invented ice cream, has some interesting flavors. There is an ice cream store in Chinatown here in NYC where I try all their different flavors when I happen to be in the area. I have had Avocado, and I have had Wasabi, but not Avocado and Wasabi.

I like their Taro (Potato) ice cream.

I would probably pass on the Avocado,not a fan but I love wasabi. We have a wasabi and ginger mustard at work that I absolutely can't pass up. The peas look great, not silly in the least. Great picture! NancyLouise

I love avocados (in salads, ice cream and shakes), and would devour that without hesitation.

I'll take my avocado unadulterated.

I've been using avocado in smoothies - it adds creaminess and depending on what else you put in the smoothie, you can't taste avocado.

Love avocado.....Love Wasabi....love Icecream....love Wasabi peas....but I just can't see them together.
Just give me an avocado with a little lime, put more of the lime in some ice cream and put the wasabi on the peas....
But the picture is beautiful!!....Looks like lime sorbet....or gelato.....which I sure would eat!

Lindac, the wasabi peas are just decoration :) I used wasabi paste in the ice cream, but would've liked to use fresh. It's nowhere to be found in our little town.

Jenny - Today is my son's 100th school day of the year and everyone was asked to bring in 100 "things" in a paper bag and write three clues so that the class could guess what's in the bag.

1) green
2) super hot
3) 16th letter of the alphabet

Good thing he only took 100 - I've been munching on them ever since. Wife is disgusted that I'm eating them for breakfast! My dog, on the other hand is having a tough time with them. He wants to eat them so badly but just can't keep them in his mouth.
