H&M Information and Thanks Duane!

In January I began researching manufacturers of leather couches on this forum. I read numerous postings and quickly learned that there were about 3-4 manufacturers of quality leather couches. Based on the information posted here, I decided to focus on Hancock and Moore. I pretty much read all of the postings on Hancock and Moore.

Once I read the information here, I began looking for H&M couches. I contacted Duane Collie since all of his postings indicated that members could contact him for information. I was able to see many chairs and a few couches here in New York City, but only one of the ones I was interested in. I wanted a big comfy couch. I narrowed my search to about five couches (tower, restoration, city, cirrus and harbinger). The only one of them I saw in person was the city. Duane was helpful in giving me information and his take on the various couches.

I also began checking around for prices. I checked with several sellers in NYC, called the usual suspects (Elite, Lexington and Boyles), and asked Duane. Elite, Lexington and Duane had very good prices. Boyles was ging me quotes similar to what I was getting from sellers in NYC or in some cases even more.

I went back and forth on whether to get this purchase. I finally decided to get the cirrus couch and an ottoman. The cirrus is a very big couch so I was concerned whether I could get it into my apartment. I called Hancock and Moore, and they said as long as I had a standard door (36") it should be ok. Once I decided on the couch it took me another three weeks to decide on hides. I had gotten a couple of samples. Again, Duane was very helpful with this.

I initially decided to get the couch from Elite because they had given me the best pricing. I e-mailed Duane to let him know and to thank him. He made me a counter offer and so, I bought the H&M couch from Duane Collie.

From the moment I ordered the couch from Duane, I felt I was in good hand. He was able to tell me what was happening and answer my questions.

The couch was delivered by Home Delivery Services about 11 days ago. Turned out that the cirrus couch was even bigger than I had thought. Although I had asked about the couch getting in to my apartment, I never considered that it would be an issue getting it into my building. It took the delivery guys about three hours to finally get the couch into my apartment. During that time, I made a hysterical phonecall to Duane who was very helpful, suggesting other things to do to get the couch into the building. Although the couch was made on order for me, he said that if it did not ultimately get into my building, return it to his store and he would try to sell it for me.

I now have a beautiful big couch in my apartment which is very comfortable. I wanted to thank everyone, but particularly Duane Collie.

That's interesting - I've been looking for a "deep" couch for awhile especially through H&M and don't remember the Cirrus. Is it a new style? It looks nice on the H&M website.

You say you sat in the City sofa, as have I. How is the Cirrus in comparison?

Do you need to use kidney pillows to sit normally on the couch (i.e. without too much of an incline on your back)? This is the usual downside to a deep couch. I'm looking for a couch that's as deep as possible before getting so deep that you need kidney pillows.

Also, can you give me an idea on price and whether the Cirrus is part of the Town and Country program? If so, for which leathers?

If you get really bored, could you please measure the inside depth of the sofa two ways: (1) from the rear cushion to the outside edge of the seat, and (2) pushing in the rear cushion a little bit to create a normal amount of extra room, and then measure from the indented rear cushion to the outside edge of the seat? I would love to hear how these real world measurements compare to the stated interior depth of 28.75 inches (which is definitely deep). Thanks!

The Cirrus is a big sofa. I don't know if its new, because by the time I started researching it was on the website. It's a very nice sofa.

The city sofa is a much smaller sofa than the cirrus. I love to lay down in a sofa and with the city sofa when lying down on the side, there was no room in front. The Cirrus has lots of room even with the cushions and pillows. Without the cushions, its about the size of a daybed. I'm quite average size by the way. I also felt when sitting up on the city sofa that it wasn't deep enough. Actually, its a standard sofa. When sitting in the cirrus, unless I'm sitting at the edge, my feet do not meet the floor.

The cirrus comes with four pillows in the same leather as the couch. I've used it with both. I do think you need the pillows to simply sit on the couch properly with your feet on the floor. I, however, have been lounging with pretty much my feet up or lying down. Even when sitting up, I have my feet on an ottoman.

The cirrus is not part of the town and country/marriage program. I only priced it for grade 2 and 3 leathers and it seems to normally ranged $3500-$4500. I bought it back when H&M had their 5% discount.

I've tried to take the measurements you've indicated. Here's the results: (1) 30 1/3", and (2) 32". I'm not the best with a tape measurement, but it's a deep couch and long.

I am a Hancock and Moore Dealer, and their warranty works the way most others do. H&M's warranty is on the frame, spring-up construction, and cushions for manufacturer's defects. They will repair or offer an allowance. It is stated in their price list. You can ask Boyle's to fax you a copy of the page. The warranties do not include wear and tear / normal use. Springs can and will squeak, which is not the same as a broken spring (when broken, that is considered a failed part), or a broken frame. Basically this comes down to a judgment call on the part of the dealer and area sales rep. Most of the time, in the first year of ownership things are covered without question. After the one year mark, it becomes more discretionary on items not specifically stated in the warranty. In the furniture industry, warranties are handled by the selling dealer in conjunction with the area sales rep. If you choose to buy from a North Carolina discounter then your local rep, and your local merchant will not assist you. You will have to revert back to Boyle's to handle your claim. The North Carolina dealers have a reputation for poor after-the-sale service, which is the trade-off for discount prices. On an issue such as yours, what is considered reasonable is to return the piece to H&M for a re-tie of the springs (or do it locally with a good upholstery shop) and you pay the delivery/freight charges both ways. I thank you all for your inputs. I think I am the only person in real-life (not online) who understands the beauty of the H&M Chesterfield. My DH and friends supported lindac's observation that the Chesterfield does not look like a lounging type of sofa. Yes, I agree, but I love it!!! So I've been out-voted. We are getting some generic leather sofa. Let's see how long this thing lasts... Someday...someday, my love (Chesterfield)... Again, thank you. Amanda

Glad to help. The more you can learn about furniture, the better you can see how to spend your dollar to get the balance of affordability and durabilty for your hard earned cash. There are as many leather care products out there as there is toothpastes, and everyone seems to have a favorite. Two things to do with leather, one is to get the oils and dirt off it to prevent the tanning agents from being compromised and the other is to put some moisterizer / protectant onto it. I use Leathermaster kits, not the cheapest, but that the commercial industry standard for nearly all leather upholstery makers. For Gardenweb members, $ 27.00 and free shipping (USA only). If you never get around to getting a leather kit, at the very least wipe the piece down with a damp cloth from time to time. I've seen customers ruin a quality leather recliner in under six years from hard use and no maintenance. On the other hand, I have a Hancock & Moor recliner that I purchased new in 1987 that still looks great, and I use the Leathermaster products on it 2x a year. Just wanted to add that I experienced exactly the same, stellar, service from Duane. The standard of service (and price) in New Orleans is pretty poor, and it was a real pleasure to find someone who was so helpful. No relation!

On a related note, we ordered the colonial, whichever is the deepest, c. 40 inches, it too fitted through a standard size door, but it is a beast, so not for a small room!

Emmasouf, that was quite a day when they brought the sofa to you, wasn't it?! That's the first time ever that we've measured an apartment doorway for clearances and then found out the main building door was smaller! I'm glad that worked out, because you worked hard to get the perfect sofa.
