40's home with brick mantle want gone
Comments (3)Unlike fireplaces built today, which are either prefab or which are built according to known, predictable patterns, old ones were custom built. I think, therefore, the feasability of the kinds of alteration you are thinking about would best be judged by a trained eye. On the other hand, if your's is part of a subdivision of similar homes, ask neighbors about their fireplaces. If you haven't had a chimney sweep clean your chimney yet, which you should do, find one who is technically knowledgeable and, while he or she is removing the sot from your chimney ask him a few questions. If you've cleaned your chimney already, ask a local fireplace dealer for a visit and a free estimate....See MoreDrystack Fireplace gone wrong- how to fix it?
Comments (40)I do like it, but....I do think the firebox looks small. I'd say it needs another 12" of total width and height at least. Could they just remove the stone back up to the mantle height, put in a bigger and raised firebox, and then re-finish it off?...See MoreCutting a brick out (or if half) in a fireplace - Advice
Comments (8)Chisel off the bricks that are in the way of the TV (A & B). Completely remove the bricks that are in the upper left (D). Remove the brick (C) in the center next bricks (A) that you chiseled off and put it where you removed the bricks in the upper left (D). You may need to chisel deeper into bricks (A) to help you dig out brick (C) without damaging it. Live with your home the way you want it now and deal with preparing the fireplace for resale if you ever do sell. It's unlikely you will be able to come up with matching bricks to replace the damaged bricks. You can always put stone veneer over the entire fireplace or just remove all the brick, repair the wall and do whatever you want to it for resale. Or, you could go ahead and do all of that now. Also, if you are going to install a TV above the fireplace, you are going to need a heat deflector of some sort. I recommend adding a steel mantel and some fireplace glass doors. Let me know if you need help with those ideas....See Morestyling an enormous brick fireplace/chimney
Comments (9)In design, there is a proportionality concept called the ‘golden mean’ or 3:5 or about 1.6 — call it 1.5 — that applies well in your high ceilinged room. You would choose a piece 1.5x the height of your mantle and up to 2/3 the width and it most visually appealing. In Jinx photos above, I think you can see that in #1 and #2 (because your eye includes the light fixture), #3 looks a little puny to me but the wood trim is meant to address that, #4 and #5 where the mirror is about 2/3 the space above the mantle....See Morehearthside_im_all_in
