Practical issue with double doors that caused us to do a single door in our project: One leverset is a dummy. We found that with the dummy lever we had on our last house that people would not know which one was the operating door and accidentally bend the lever down even though it was "fixed". It would move a bit though and so I constantly had to be resetting the lever back to the horizontal position. We opted for a single wide (42") front door in our current project. This should be plenty wide enough for even chunky pieces of furniture.

In hindsight we would love to convert our 3-sided woodburning fireplace that is truly for esthetics to an LP format. From what I have researched we cannot use an insert as we lose the visibility from 2 out of 3 sides and apparently gas burning logs do not allow for blower to push out the heat. I am reaching out to all of the experts out there for your brilliant ideas if we can find something other than wood to burn. Hubby is getting tired of chopping, stacking and hauling wood. Tkx

If the alteration you are thinking about can be done, it would be a major and costly project. I would get the opinions of at least 3 different fireplace experts. If they all agree that it can be done, and on how it should be done and the cost, then it's up to you to decide whether you want it badly enough to spend the money and live with the mess while they're working. But if even one of the 3 experts advises against it, I would not do it. You do incur a risk of "expert" opinion that is wrong (not so expert), or worse, a so-called expert who is just looking to make some money, and he can't make money if he says it can't be done. There is also a risk that, once they start the alteration and dig into this or that, that they find womething they did not expect, and they tell you that it will cost more to do it because of the unexpected finding. You might also check with the forum in hearth.com. The people there love and breath fireplaces. You might get some interesting opinions from them. I wonder if they would agree or not.

You can replace the present stove with one that has glass doors if you wish to increase the ambiance. You might be able to add another stove on the opposite wall, using the same flue. These changes are not a DIY project.
